333  Products Marketplace / Product Partners / Re: Signing Time vs. Baby Signing Time on: April 02, 2009, 11:15:48 PM
ST & BST both teach the signs and from what I have seen of MBCT I’m sure it would work too.  I have my hands full with twins (literally) so it was very difficult to sign with them in the beginning.  I tried just teaching them on my own & didn’t see any progress after 4 months.  I let them watch the video at 12 mo.  Then within a couple days they were signing.  Part of what the video did is it allowed me to interpret their sign approximations.  As it turned out they had been signing for awhile, I just didn’t recognize it until I saw them signing with the video.  For example, the signs for “ball,” “hurt” and “more” all just looked like she was trying to clap to me.  So the videos have not only been a good tool in teaching them sign language, but also teaching me what they know.
At first I would sign and sing along with the video so they would know what to do.  Once they caught on, I could leave the room & they would follow along on their own.  This would probably even allow you to get some studying done.  They really learn fast from these videos, so you might want to see if your library has them.

The main difference between ST & BST is how many signs are used in the songs.  BST just shows a few featured ASL words while ST uses many more words and even some ASL grammar.  I started BST every day when my kids were 12 months old & ran out of material by the time they were 15 months old.  That’s when I moved onto ST.  I know ST was intended for older kids, but mine have had no problem learning from it.  When I started I showed the videos for several weeks, but my kids pick up most of the words in one show after watching them maybe 5-10 times.   I would recommend ST to anybody planning on teaching ASL as a second language, but BST would be fine if you wanted to know a few words.
Something else about the ST series, volumes 1, 2 & 3 are very different from the rest of the series.  They follow a format similar to YBCR where they feature just the text on the screen with nothing else to distract.  My kids actually learned to read several words from this.
There are lots of demos on YouTube, here are a few…

Oh, I forgot to mention… there is no need to correct your son’s signing, just keep making the correct sign and he will get it.
336  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: whats with my 28month old? on: April 02, 2009, 04:08:29 PM
This is normal, it’s called sign approximations.  If you watch signing videos with children in them you will see a lot of this, even older kids.  Usually they will make the correct motion in the correct location but it takes awhile to develop the coordination to make the correct hand shape.  Fine motor skills will take a few years to develop.  In the interim you will get to know your boy’s sign approximation just like you will know if he says something like “wawa” he means “water.”  What really helps me understand my kids is to watch and listen.  My daughter’s sing for “more” looks just like her sign for “ball”, if she is making a “B” sound I know she means ball.  Something else, she also makes nonsense signs, just like she babbles nonsense.   I just go along with it and say something like “Oh really?”  It’s very cute.  LOL

I prefer skirts, but now that I have kids jeans are more practical.
339  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Tearing and Eating Books/Paper on: March 30, 2009, 12:07:23 AM
My 17 mo old twins have been very rough on books too.  I wanted them to have access to books all the time but I also didn’t want to be following them around saying “no” all the time because too many no’s diminishes its importance.   I bought a bunch of used board books that I don’t care if they get destroyed.  Oversized, 10 by 14 inches, board books last much longer because they are too big to carry around and chew on; just make sure the binding looks durable.   I also got them some fabric books, these work great for activities such as peek-a-boo flaps.  Some of our favorites:
http://www.amazon.com/Plush-Cat-Wont-Eat-Bananas/dp/B000RX1NII/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1238366880&sr=8-1 My kids love to move the Velcro banana from page to page.
http://www.amazon.com/Hello-Spot-Book-Eric-Hill/dp/0399242821/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1238367111&sr=8-1 Peek-a-boo flaps! Very durable.
http://www.amazon.com/Squishy-Turtle-Friends-Cloth-Books/dp/0312491840/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_b
We have most of the Roger Priddy cloth books, but squishy turtle is probably my favorite.
340  Parents' Lounge / Coffee Corner - General Chat / Re: toys: gender divided? on: March 21, 2009, 12:11:30 AM
I don’t think this is at all strange, my son has a doll.  In fact I think that a doll teaches valuable social lessons.  For example it a family was expecting a new baby an older sibling can be given their own baby doll to help them get ready and learn what to expect.  Dolls also let boys role play being a dad.
341  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Question about learning quantities on computer on: March 20, 2009, 10:27:24 PM
I recently downloaded the PowerPoint presentation with quantities of red dots from 1-100.  I noticed it had no sound with each slide saying the number of dots on the slide.  Is this because most people want to record their own voice for their kids to hear or is this because they don’t normally hear the number at this stage?
342  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Research on reading speed on: March 20, 2009, 09:16:28 PM
I recently found this http://www.news-medical.net/?id=28191 article on how phonics, whole word and whole language all contribute to reading speed.  Sorry if this has been posted before, I'm new here.
343  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Still Seeing Spots on: March 20, 2009, 07:00:02 AM
I have been showing my kids quantities with red dots in PowerPoint.   I have the slides appear for 3 seconds and I say the number (no numerals used) so it just goes from one red dot slide to another.  The problem I am having is that I can still see a residual image of the previous slide; like when you stare at something and close your eyes but can still see it wacko .  I hope this makes sense.  I am wondering if this is affecting how my kids perceive the quantities on the slides.  Is 3 seconds a good amount of time to show the slides?  Should I slow down and show the slides for longer giving the eye time to adjust?  Or would a different color scheme reduce this affect?  TIA
