376  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Research help... what are effects of poverty/neglect etc on brain development? on: March 29, 2009, 07:10:55 AM
thanks smilesmile

btw if the question is about the influence of poverty - it can be also beneficial because poor mothers carry babies in slings, are together with children (no job), have extended breastfeeding, cosleeping and other beneficial things; low education may be worse than poverty smile
377  Downloads + Collaborations Discussions / Free Downloads / Re: white slides in between topics on: March 28, 2009, 02:00:01 PM
When I make my own ppts, I allways put blank slides between the sentences because than I can easier read them. Also the child can understand that the sentence ends, and something another will start.

I also edit the downloaded ppts by adding empty pages, for example, between the math equations.
But I don't upload ppts with empty slides because nobody does smile
378  Downloads + Collaborations Discussions / Free Downloads / Re: Making Powerpoint Slides-Stuck!! Where do I get the souds? on: March 28, 2009, 01:51:14 PM
for bird sounds, I just write in goggle "birds name mp3". for other nature sounds might be similar. (and than save and insert this mp3)

http://www.epjournal.net/filestore/ep05102183.pdf
in the last part there is something about the brain development influenced by caregivers. also a lot of references.

btw this is one of my favourite articles and I will copy some paragraphs here
================

Most importantly, by changing the very structure and the patterns of activity within the brain, experiences in early life also influence how subsequent information will be processed, thus affecting future functioning. Even though this shaping process continues throughout life, its effects are particularly critical during these early stages of development when the foundations for the brain’s basic structure are laid.

For infants, their relationships with their main caregivers constitute the primary environment for their early development.
....
Within this complex framework, affectionate and responsive caregiving during infancy is clearly emerging as an important prerequisite for healthy brain development and later emotional wellbeing.

Most obvious examples of the link between adverse early social experiences and resulting deficits in brain and overall functioning can be found in clinical samples. For instance, former Romanian orphans, who had experienced severe early social deprivation, still showed long-term deficits in their cognitive and behavioral functioning after being adopted into U.S. families, with concomitant dysfunction in a group of limbic brain areas typically activated by stress and known to be damaged by prolonged stress (Chugani et al., 2001). In an Australian sample of extremely low birth weight infants, a history of childhood neglect was further associated with a smaller head circumference at ages 2 and 4, and with increasingly delayed cognitive development over the first four years of life compared to children who had not experienced neglect (Strathearn, Gray, O’Callaghan, and Wood, 2001). Another U.S. study on children and adolescents with past experience of maltreatment, and continued posttraumatic stress disorder, also found significantly decreased cerebral and intracranial brain volumes in the maltreated subjects when compared to matched controls (De Bellis et al., 1999). In addition, intracranial brain volume correlated positively with child’s age at the time of abuse onset, and negatively with duration of abuse.

==== and look at this  ======
Milder forms of relational deficits in parenting have also been shown to produce distinct findings. In a study conducted by Dawson, Frey, Panagiotides, et al. (1999) in the U.S., 13- to 15-month-old infants of depressed mothers, when compared to infants of nondepressed mothers, showed a persistent atypical pattern of lowered activity in the left frontal brain area relative to the right frontal region. In typically developing children, increased left versus right frontal activity is usually observed. The abnormal condition also persisted during positive interactions with a nondepressed adult. The left frontal area is assumed to mediate positive affective expression and social approach behaviors. On a behavioral level, these children touched their mothers less than their age-matched controls, displayed less affection towards her, and with increasing duration of maternal depression were also more likely to behave in a hostile and aggressive manner

381  Local Support Groups / General Discussions / Re: Ar ko sākt? on: March 27, 2009, 11:24:51 AM

382  Local Support Groups / General Discussions / Re: Ar ko sākt? on: March 26, 2009, 07:40:39 PM

383  Local Support Groups / General Discussions / Re: musu kartites un prezentacijas on: March 25, 2009, 08:11:16 AM
384  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Sandpaper letters Montessori activity on: March 25, 2009, 08:01:29 AM
could not be a usual sandpaper. once I gave a peace of sandpaper to my doughter (18 months) and she imediately tried to test it with her teath. SadSadSad
385  Local Support Groups / General Discussions / Re: musu kartites un prezentacijas on: March 23, 2009, 06:09:46 AM

386  Local Support Groups / General Discussions / Re: musu kartites un prezentacijas on: March 21, 2009, 05:39:01 AM
Demo versijai nedarbojas failu pievienošanas iespēja. es domāju, dabūšu rīderi, pielikšu visu lielo bibliotēku, laidīšu angliski, sīce valodu arī pamācīsies.

uzliku arī divus kukaiņu failus; vabolēm man vēl viens nosaukums jāprecizē.

387  Local Support Groups / General Discussions / Re: musu kartites un prezentacijas on: March 20, 2009, 05:39:43 PM

man nupat ir parādījušies pavasara puķu faili latviski!
388  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Vaccines - can anyone pls advice from personal expereinces on: March 20, 2009, 03:14:01 PM
I have no personal experience.
My opinion (after reading several papers) is:

For several serious diseases, there is a certain age when they start to manifest. For example, autism starts at 18 months.
Babies usually have several vaccines before this age. If one thing happens after another, people bind these two things together and say that one is causing another. but also unvaccinated children suffer of autism. There are several large studies showing that the same % of vaccinated and unvaccinated children suffer of autism.

I can give you several links but they all come from here
http://www.newscientist.com/search?query=vaccine+autism&fromdate=&todate=&rbauthors=&rbissueno=&resultview=keyword

Another aspect is that child has to be totally healthy at the time of vaccinating. If your child has cough and doctor says that you can vaccinate, don't do it. Some month ago, one child died of diphteria vaccine. Child was sick at the time of vaccination and died, probably of diphteria.

390  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Long term benefits of early learning???? on: March 19, 2009, 09:43:43 PM
p.s.
my conclusion was that early readers like to write blogs
(literacy skills + interesting views)
but with late reading we can avoid graphomany.
