46  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Why do wish for another baby? on: April 22, 2013, 01:07:48 PM
I'm the same as you. I wish for another child. Unfortunately Hubby has pulled the plug.

Neither one of us is right or wrong in our wanting/not wanting another baby. I just wish my husband would take responsibility for the decision he has made but that is another topic all together.

Hi Agnes4eva.

My name is Kimberley and I am from Adelaide. I have been part of Brillkids since 2008 and I never left. I use little reader/music and maths and love it.

My eldest attended Gymbaroo and has recently been accepted to start school almost a year early. She was due to start in 4th term this year but was put up at the beginning of this year into reception. We send her to a Montessori school and even though we had a few teething problems Miss S has taken off with gusto and it has been the right move for her.

Miss S now attends Rythmic Gymnastics on a saturday morning as well as school 5 days a week. I also continue to afterschool her as well.

My other daughter who is 2 now reads at level 8-9 which equates to approximately the end of term 3 in reception so 5 1/2 6 year old. She does swimming and attends playgroup at the school she is also learning Chinese and french. as well as a exposure to maths and loves little Musician.

All the little Reader/music and maths is worth the investment and I promise you you wont regret it. My husband and I have decided that if Montessori school does not work out we will Homeschool our girls. Homeschool is growing considerably in Australia and you can join a group local to your area.
48  EARLY LEARNING / Homeschooling / Re: Living abroard with children-travel the world to learn on: April 14, 2013, 11:50:44 AM
I am the same.

Miss Sophia is always asking to travel to different places. The latest is China. It would be such an awesome thing to do. My hubby and I have always talked about going to a non-english speaking country and living there for a year. Only thing is we can't agree to which place. Mine is France and his is Japan. When my husband was young he lived in Canada for a year and it was one of the best experiences of his life.

I think travel opens you up to so many opportunities. I am thinking thought tomorrow we are off to the Post office I think I might just grab them both a passport application and be ready. I think it is time to really sit down and set some learning goals. Oh how Homeschooling rears itself again? smile smile smile
49  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Update on Miss S on her 1st term of school (almost a year early) on: April 05, 2013, 12:08:41 AM
Hi everyone,

I just thought I would give you an update on Sophia as we complete her first term of school today.

I was initially very worried about her starting school almost a year early. Turns out that this has been a fantastic move because she has just fitted in and has just run with the academics and is doing well socially.

This term Sophia has completed not 1 or 2 or 3 maths work books but has completed 7 in one term. She has completed 3 on addition 3 on subtraction and 1 on multiplication. She is loving maths and really enjoying the learning. The best thing is that she is not held back she is really encouraged to follow her intrests in the class.

I got off to a rocky start with her teacher thinking she was not going to let Sophia keep up her reading level because their was no appropriate books at her level (which means appropriate content) I have taken over and I send Sophia to school with chapter books and we have started on other genres. Sophia is really enjoying poetry books at the moment especially A.A. Milne. So during the school holidays we will be off to the library to find more poetry for her to read.

We had a parent teacher interview last night and he thinks her memory is boderline photographic. They only have to teach her things once and she is off.  He didn't say gifted but she is highly capable! She just needs to improve on her handwriting and spelling. I said I know Sophia can spell and write because she does at home but I think that Sophia does not enjoy handwriting and therefore will not do it but as she sees her friends doing spelling she will want to do it and since I know she can spell and write I am not concerned. I think she will do it just when she wants to.

The other thing i'm really pleased about is how she is becoming a self-directed learner. She has a work-card with a number of subjects on it and in the first term they expect the child to complete half of it a day but she came up to me the other day and showed me her completed work card. She managed her own time and completed it. You could see the pride  in her eyes when she showed me because she felt that she had accomplished something in her day. The work card has Reading, Spelling (Box work), Hand writing, Maths, cultural studies, snack and one other which escapes me right now. She completed the whole thing in the morning work period. which is 3 hours after lunch they work as a class on a specific subject like the human body, landforms, 2nd language, music, and so on.

I think the fact they she is becoming a self-directed learner is the most important skill of all and the one that most warms my heart. Because once the academics are down-pat, managing yourself and your time is a really important skill to learn. So to see her learning this skill at 4.5 to me amazing and the fact that she wants to do it.

We have had one problem with bullying this term with one little girl picking on her and telling her she wasn't allowed to play with her or learn multiplication until she said so. So we alerted the teacher to what was happening and the teacher acted upon it immediately and now Sophia and the other little girl are fast becoming good friends. Which is a very positive outcome and fantastic to see that it was not left to fester.

So all in all I feel at this point in time Sophia is very happy, and flourishing in her environment. She is well supported by her teachers and peers and I feel sending her to a Montessori school has been the right move so far. I have not ruled out homeschooling providing Sophia is continually supported by her teachers and peers. If things make a turn I have no problem pulling her out and bringing her home. She is loving it ans when she was home sick the yesterday she asked me if she would be well enough for school tomorrow as she would hate not to go. She has even asked me to make her work-card for her when she is at home for the school holidays. haha smile

Thought I would let you all know.

Hi everyone,

I came across this website and thought I would share. It is full of audio books which reads the book in just about any language you want. Even better it has subtitles in the language you are reading the language in. So you also get to hear the language but it is read with each word being highlighted as it goes. Each book is about 5 minutes long and there are many that are free and I believe you can join the sight to get more.

53  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Moved - Discussing Merits/Legitimacy of Mid-Brain Activation on: March 13, 2013, 03:18:42 AM
I once read in an autobiography about a girl who left africa and became a model in england than moved to america. Apparently a tv station wanted to do a documentry on her life and took her back to Africa (The specific country she was from but escapes me now) They asked her how she was going to find her mum without a telelphone to let her know she was in the country) She said My Mum will know Im here and she will find me. Low and behold on the last day of shooting her mum turns up. She was not surprised but her crew was. She said one of the things that many tribal cultures have was some sort of telekinetic connection to each other so they always knew they were safe. This defies logic but I can see that maybe without formal schooling and second guessing that their intuition was freely allowed to develop.

This is not the first time I have read about intuition being a part of tribal cultures apparently this type if intuitution has been recorded through out Aborigianal tribes as well.

I am beginning to think that we always had these powers but because we no longer needed them up unitl now where the information is just at you all the time and now we need the skills to take in all that info, that we bothered to do anything about it. I think both my girls and I would benefit greatly from having these skills. @Mandab I have a friend in the travel industry she could do you a good deal if you want to go to Maylasia.

What do you think? Is this really new or are we reactivating what we always had? And do we need RB acticvation to not only survive but really live our lives in this century?

Hi Rixu,

I would suggest you take her to the Dr immediately. Wanting to sleep all the time it is not a good sign even if she does not have a tempreture. See a dr if the dr says she is fine work you can work on eating strategies then. Always check up first.
55  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Moved - Discussing Merits/Legitimacy of Mid-Brain Activation on: March 10, 2013, 12:14:36 AM
While I was working for the Aus Gov before I resigned I noticed the greater need to be processing information rather quickly. The bosses expected you to read an email and retain amongst all the other emails you got. I was always really lucky as I have always been able to retain information rather quickly. I put this down to two things I am left handed so therfore a little more in my right brain and I loved to play memory as a little kid. In fact I still love to play memory now against a 7 year old and enjoy beating them. Which is mean but makes me feel my brain is still working and not ageing.

I also once read "The Brain that Changes Itself" When reading thos book I realised how flexible the brain actually is to learning and different learning environments. They showed a number of studies where the high flashing has helped a number of people with disabilities to lead relatively normal lives. How people who had suffered from strokes when taken back to the skills they learned as a baby and built upon them developed whole new parts of the brain. I think we are skeptical because we have been stuck in the same of thinking for a long time. I think the rapid flashing opens a whole side of the brain that we have shut down because at that point of time it no longer served us to have those skills such as rapid memory recall, ESP perfect pitch because we stopped living in tribes and the threats to our safety diminished. We went through a stage of history where we wanted proof for everything, I think that time is coming to an end and now we are going back to develop the side of our brain we have long forgotten because it is now needed again. We need to move quickly we need to recall information quickly we need to be able to communicate at warp speed, we need perfect pitch to aquire a better understanding of the people around us and we need to acquire languages like we never have before.

That is why I think we are seeing such a huge gravitation away from school based learning because like Sugata says School is obsolete. We understand that with technology school can be anywhere in the world and having worldly experiences makes you are better job candidate than someone who does not.

I think also people want more time with their children want their children to be nice people and since right brain education is based on love and peace much like Montessori. People don't want to send their kids out into the world like the last generation who have left much to be desired.

Montessori also said that education need to reflect the times the child is living in so it is necessary to be flexible in the world we are now living. She never copyrighted her work because she believed her research should always be continued and changed to fit the child and the generation they were living in.

I think Baby Z is reading!!! Wow just goes to show there are no limits to a baby's capabilities.

I love this forum so much. I have the wink program and guess what is going on in the car tomorrow for the drive to school. That's right wink dvds

TMT if you want a book shipped out of Australia I will happily do it for you or any one else who wants stuff from here.

Yes I think the right brain/mid brain activation is very intriguing. Especially the Hado reading. I would love both my girls to be able to read books just by touching them I think the 1000 of hours saved on academic reading especially for yr 11, 12 and into uni would be just fantastic and leave so much more time for other interests and sport.

You are all such mentors to me.

Does diet also effect Mid-brain activation as well? I noticed that when I  eliminate dairy product from my diet I feel less foggy and able to think clearer as well as when I up my water intake? Do you think an excellent diet helps with mid brain activation?
