46  BrillKids Software / Little Math - General Discussion / Re: Very easy to get little ones interested in Little Math - can we lock keyboard? on: February 28, 2009, 02:20:18 AM
I know the locking the keyboard and mouse is an good option, i love that too.

Infact there are times, I would not like to use the "AutoFoward" option and mannually browse thru the next slide. The reason being is below
1. At times, the slides move too slow based on the size of the audio files, if i turn off the pronounciation or audio, i feel the Little Reader/Math navigates faster
2. Second reason, I would like to play it manually is because, there are times my child would take her eyes off the screen and hence if the autoforward option i have no control to navigate it too previous picture,

Hence there are times I would like to have control on the keyboard but I would love to lock all the keys accept the right and left keys to navigate forward and backward, so that my child cannot press any keys.
Could this option been implemented for Little Reader/Math.. This would be really great.....

Hi Jandy,
Thanks for the website, i liked the HK dictionary website, but I would like to know how could i prononuce the words.
Would it be possible  if i give the list words i need in chineese and if you could tell me how to write and pronounce it.
Or if there is any website that can tell me the pronounciation, please do let me know.
48  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Reading success? on: February 28, 2009, 01:27:30 AM
That's so true, I agree with Sapna.
There were so many words that i thaught my child since birth and always wondered if she knew anyone of them. I felt as if i was talking to the walls, i so badly wanted to test it and at times i did and my daughter would not resond most of the times and that would discourage me, but i just kept going.

But surprisingly when she was around 9.5 mths she just started to repeat words that I would say and out of no where she would say words that i used to teach her since birth and that really took me by surprise. She had a vocabulary of nearly 60-70 words, if i recall.

Hence from that day onwards I said to myself never ever test them, infact I do it more problem solving way suggested by Glenn Doman. Eg if i would ask her to get the green block and if she would get the yellow block, i would just tell her that "this is a yellow block" and then show the green block and the say "this is a green block". Then I would clap my hands and kiss or hug and say good job Calanatha (my daughter's name). Since I am being do this problem solving technique at very young age, now when she is 17 months, she knows when she does something good, she claps her hand as a sense of achievement.

Besides the above, I am not sure why you couldnt see the my sample excel sheet attachment. However I have re-attached it for you

Hi Liz
It's been quite diffiult for you to manage between house/work schedule.
I too went thru this phase, and came up with a schedule that best fits me and my daughter. I try to prepare my materials on weekdays and put them togehter over the weekend.

You could refter to my post on how I went about teaching my child.

50  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: How to encourage toddler to speak? on: February 27, 2009, 08:39:54 PM
I wouldnt worry, each child is unique. The very fact your child is babbling that is good sign, that is another way of communicating non-verbally.
you continue doing what your are doing. And your child eventually start to say words.
51  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Reading success? on: February 27, 2009, 08:30:14 PM
Hi
I feel we all moms go thru the phase of worriness and in that process we tend to test our child, and when our child does not respond, we feel they dont know and hence that makes us frustrated and we eventually we give up.
This is a very normal feeling. Dont worry.

I went thru the same phase with my child, but the only difference is that i never gave up eventhough when i got frustrated. I am believer of Glenn Doman's  program and according to him you should never test your child. They are born intellectual, you continue to do what you are doing and your child will respond.

You could check my post how I went about my teaching program

53  Products Marketplace / Product Discussions and Reviews / Re: Baby Babble DVD? on: February 27, 2009, 08:09:30 PM
Hi Ellie
I dont think you need to worry. You are doing the right thing by communicating. Keep doing it consistently and your son will respond. Your son is too small he just 6.5 months. He will eventually respond and start talking. My daughter did the same.

Ask yourself, if he understand what you say, You could tell it when
he looks at you or giggles or smiles or
he responds by babbling or
he looks at toy or picture you have been teaching him with exitement.
There are so many ways babies can communicate non verbally.

I think you should'nt worry, also when you take your son for immunization, if the doctor has told you not to worry, then you shouldnt.

Apart from the above, if you still want to focus on early child reading or brain developement, you could read books on Glenn Doman programs and also work with the BrillKids Maths and Reader software. Also I used the "Baby Bumblee DVD" to teach my child

54  Parents' Lounge / Introduce Yourself / Re: Hello Everyone - From Judy Mendes on: February 27, 2009, 06:17:33 AM
Hi jsmonton
Thanks,
I guess it all comes with determination and hardwork.
Even before i could have a baby, i knew all what i want to do with my child.

But there were times I would just fall back and give myself a break especially when i'm working.

What i realised is, spending time with your child and having fun as you play and learn is the most important factor to lay the basis of your foundation. Since I enjoyed what i did in the entire material preparation and offcourse teaching my child, it never bothered me how hectic it is for me to juggle between work and home.
55  Parents' Lounge / Introduce Yourself / Re: Hello Everyone, nice to meet all you guys. on: February 27, 2009, 03:22:21 AM
Hi Jandy
You dont have to worry about exposing TV your daughter, what is important is that you show the right stuff to your children.

Showing children educational dvds to your daughter wont make her stupid, it's just another way to teaching your children.

My daughter was always exposed to 32" HDTV since birth. Infact before i had the BrillKids software, I used to prepare Glen Domans material thru powerpoint presentaiton and at times prepare homemade DVD.

I do understand your worry, that if you show all your teaching materials on TV or on computer, your daughter may be too glued to it and might never find books interesting. And believe that was my worry too.
Hence, the way i went about my program is I always used a mix of both, what i mean is
I had my Encylopedia stuff always shown on TV / Computer / DVD, as i find it's a time consuming activity to find, cut and stick pictures on posterboards, and also very costly to print them from the internet. Hence the most cheapest way to teach was on computer or DVD
But incase of Maths / Reading I would always do a mix of both, I had my dot cards on poster board and word cards on plain letter size paper. And also have a powerpoint presentation for the same.
At times I would show her powerpoint presentations and at time my hand made stuff

I also purchased simple picture books with only single pictures on each page and got her used to book reading. I would allow my daughter to take the lead to turn pages and name the picture as she turned. At times I would turn.
And in this way, it always teaching fun for me and children.

I also bought magnetic board, and magnetic alphabets and numbers and would form words from it. Most of the times I would always give my daughter to put the alphabets on the board, and she would form words that are meaningless. And then I would pronounce the word she forms eventhough its not a word. In this way you give them to explore and form words which is always fun for them. And if you read Glen Domans book "How to teach your baby to read", he does mention that you should allow your children to form its words and sentences and never discourage them in what they do.

You could always prepare your BITCards Dot Cards in a book form, where your daughter can turn the pages and you can tell her what it is each time she the turn pages from the books.

Also remember, couple of minutes in front of TV wouldnt do any harm. You should always use different methods of teaching, inorder to keep it fun and interesting and also maintaining a balance in everything. Anything that is extreme is always bad, hence totally avoiding TV isnt good and too much of TV also isnt good.

Try it out, as I say this because i followed the same approach with my daughter.

You could look at my post, as to how I went about my teaching on Glenn Doman's material.

57  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / How to teach your child - Science on: February 25, 2009, 08:31:25 PM
Hi All
I am quite interested in teaching my toddler science, but i dont know what should i start with.
I live in Canada, and heard about this program "Lets talk Science - Wings of Discovery" for early years , kindergarten and teens. U can get from http://www.letstalkscience.ca/main/wings_of_discovery%AE/

They talk about how you could use simple science activities at  home, they improvise on their reasoning and rational skills whic i feel is very important, as everything revolves around it. They have books that list detail activity programs. But these books are very expensive

Here are some sample activities
http://www.gtkpress.com/default.aspx?pid=m_1006
http://www.letstalkscience.ca/main/wings_of_discovery_-_sample_activities_early_years_and_Kindergarten/

Here are the cost to th books
http://www.letstalkscience.ca/main/store_early_years/

Hence needed to know if anyone has these books or who can share some of the science activities they do with their child.
Infact I send my daughter to a daycare who teaches these science activities on her. When this program was launched they first piloted this program at my daughters daycare, hence the cost of the daycare is very expensive.

Hence i thaught i could rather teach my child these science activities at home each day instead spending so much in a daycare. And anyway i always do with her math/reading/ency and hence thaught to add another area of exposure to her knowledge set.

Judy
60  Parents' Lounge / Coffee Corner - General Chat / Re: my terrible sleeping habit... on: February 25, 2009, 06:11:04 AM
Dear Athea
I too have this same problem, i work 9-5 and when i come home and busy with chores at home and when its time to bed, my mind just cant rest.
I too tried having a warm milk, having a warm bath or listening to music, but nothing helped me, i would roll on bed til 3-4 in the morning and get up at 7 to get ready to go to work.

I guess with me, i found that my mind was too active and busy thinking of too many things to do and complete and hence i just couldnt rest eventhough i was tired, hence what i did is just started to list the things i needed to do and priotized them and put them on my poster board. By doing this, i just found that brain was at ease knowing that i wouldnt forget to complete the task since I priotized and jotted my task.

In this way it just helped me to get things off my mind knowing incase i forget anything I have got jotted in somewhere.

I really dont know what would be your reason, but if there is something on your mind that you keep thinking or worrying about then i guess the best would be to deal with it first, if not at the moment, then put on a peace of paper with its date and priority.
