Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: why hiccips? how to get rid of that?

Unless it is specifically an alcohol-free gripe water they do contain approximately 4% alcohol by volume. It's like giving babies a teaspoon of weak beer but the herbs found in gripe water are wonderful, and if you can get an alcohol-free one it would help. But my doctor said never to worry about hiccoughs. they're seriously scary looking sometimes (Zed's whole torso would deform and it looked like his ribs were bending inwards) , but they bother you more than your baby.

You need to be concerned about getting enough, and the right kinds, of fats. But all commercial formulas are well balanced. As long as your LO is still drinking 24oz of formula alongside the solids he will be fine. Depending on where you live when they suggest switching from formula to whole cow's milk, but when you start introducing cow's milk you can slowly decrease the amount of formula you give your son.

More tummy time. More time held in an upright position like this: either held with your arms or in a carrier/sling/wrap. Some babies also have a preference for one side or the other while breastfeeding and if that is the case with your little one switching to a 'football hold' from a cradle hold can really help.

I can not get this to download correctly RUN does not pop up as an option when I copy and paste the site. It just says begin download. Please help.... What browser do you use?? I was using firefox susan khan The files are too large to run from their website. You must download them. I would recommend saving the install files as well in case you need to reinstall the program because the links are only active for January. I took all the installers, workbooks, guides and the extras, plus a copy of the email they sent and burned them. I don't know if I'll need the back up, but I'd hate not to have it if I did. FWIW I used firefox for everything and it worked fine.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / My Baby CAN "Read"!!

We broke our daily routine and Zed watched YBCR on a non-English day (gasp! the horror!) because Daddy wanted to see him wave at the tv. I feel better about being confused now, the wording used is a little ambiguous, but Titzer does say that when they can pick out the right word in the Word Games section it's time to move on. I just skipped that part the first time. LOL. Daddy was having no such thing though.
The results? He waved at "wave" every time. He yelled out baby at "baby" a couple times when the word was showing but every time it showed a baby. He giggled and tried to touch his nose for "nose" even though he had things in his hands. In the Word Games section he got 10 of the 14 right!
He amazes me so much everyday!

If money were no object: I would not have worked while pregnant. I would have bought the entire IAHP catalogue, and attended at least one class. I would have painted Zed's room in high contrast colours. I would have bought a hot tub or a small heated swimming pool. I would have built monkey bars in the house. but otherwise would have done exactly what I did.

Thank goodness! I would feel awful talking DH into YBCR and then only watching each video once!
I can't believe how quickly he's picking things up though. His language is taking off, he's more than doubled the words he can verbalize in the last 2 weeks (23 to 57 in two languages) and is showing signs of recognizing written words in those same two languages. Nothing yet in the other 5 and we give them equal treatment. Or his approximations are too approximate for me to understand him.
Children are amazing.

We have a copy of YBCR and I just showed it to Zed for the first time a couple days ago. About the third time "wave" came up, he waved at the tv and said bye-bye before the voiceover said wave.
That is, according to the little pep-talk at the beginning by Titzer, signs of understanding and time to move onto the next DVD. Does that mean I'm seriously only going to have to show him that DVD the one time? Should we watch it a couple more times anyway?
We only do English once per week, but we have been doing word flashcards. Mostly nouns though, things he sees in everyday life. Wave was not one of the words we've shown him.
Anyone else have a similar experience? Any ideas how to move forward?

Parents' Lounge / For Guests - No Membership Required / Re: 9 mo. old crawling

You really can't force anything. Typically once a child is strong enough they will abandon crawling for creeping because it is more efficient. It takes a lot of strength to get there though. Has he ever seen anyone creep? If not you may need to model it for him, he may not even know it's possible.
Also if a child skips creeping and starts walking having only crawled (or not even that much), they can still creep (or crawl) at any time. While it's better, from what I've read, that it be done in order, what is lost by skipping creeping can be regained simply by creeping more later.
My son went through 3 different crawling styles, a neither crawling nor creeping style, and two creeping styles before he decided walking (and later running) was the best form of transportation. I do not think he made it up to the number of yards of creeping recommended by Doman before he started walking, but he still creeps sometimes (particularly up stairs) so I know he's still getting that benefit.
More floor time is really the only suggestion I can give. At 9 months a child should be having at least 3 hours 15 minutes of floor time per day (according to my son's Dr.), Well before 9 months, if he was not sleeping or eating, my son demanded to be on the floor exploring. If your son isn't that excited about floor time, you'll need to find a way to make it exciting with toys, or books, or just yourself. Encourage movement as much as possible. Give him things worth crawling towards. Etc.
