46  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Are there differences in raising a boy and a girl? on: August 28, 2008, 12:07:49 AM
How lovely - so you will have one of each  smile
By the time he arrives I feel sure you will automatically know what to do - it will be natural for you to get it right.
I had two boys and a girl and it wasn't difficult to adapt from one to another.

The only thing I found to be a bit different was that I used cloth nappies and found that boys need  a bit more padding at the front.  LOL

It is said that boys and girls tend to reach their development milestones at different ages - but then that happens so gradually that it is no problem. There can be similar differences between two boys development stages all children are different and have different natures.

You grow with your child from the first day - so you learn to cope. Enjoy how different they are as well as how similar  Wink
47  Products Marketplace / Product Discussions and Reviews / Re: What toys do you recommend for 1-3 year olds? on: August 27, 2008, 04:29:32 PM
Ours love toys that are free!
They play for hours with packaging boxes, whether they come from groceries, toys or household deliveries doesn't matter - in fact when they open a new toy - they sometimes get lots of value with the box before turning to the contents. yes
(Once you have checked for staples and polythene stuff) large cartons can be  houses, boats, beds, all kinds of vehicles for putting things in and taking them out again.
We have a waiting list for boxes (cat food pouch12 pack) - they have a 'hinged' lid and make treasure boxes for all kinds of small toys.
Eventually they use this kind of thing to discover the properties of cardboard ie it is not waterproof when dunked in the paddling pool  Wink

An added bonus is that with no teaching at all the youngest can 'read' the boxes and tell the difference between "cat food" and "dog food" and tell the cereal packets apart as well  LOL

49  BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Who uses Little Reader? on: August 27, 2008, 09:37:00 AM
 smile
BrillBaby and BrillKids is growing into a wonderful resource for everyone.

Amongst all the posts from mothers and soon to be parents, I have noticed several other groups who are using Little Reader. I have seen posts from grandparents, uncles, aunts, teachers, those teaching special needs both adults and children, and others.
Obviously some groups overlap (such as grandparents who also work in schools)
I am conducting a Poll to find out how many groups of users there are here. Please vote ( smile)
If you come into another category of user that I have not seen – why not post and tell us about how LR helps YOU?

Thank you !! smile
50  Parents' Lounge / Forum Games / Re: Forum Game: What Song Are You Listening To At This Very Moment? on: August 27, 2008, 08:56:00 AM
"The Sound of Silence"
Actually the three boys have just gone off to nursery for the day so I really AM listening to the sound of silence  LOL
51  BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Re: 10,000 points...YOU CAN DO IT!!! on: August 27, 2008, 08:30:00 AM
 big grin  LOL  big grin

Hey Lappy I love the conga-rats where on earth did it come from? I want it!!  - Is there a website you can share?

One of my family playlist has cuddly IKEA Rat on it by request of smallest grandson #2 I am working out how to quickly change the volume of my recording because I had it set to 95% loud when I recorded the word - which is so popular that I am deafening the neighborhood every evening with "RAT" - "RAT" - "RAT" once of each boy LOL They would love the "dancing rats"  yes

I look every day to see how my points total is climbing - I'm really impatient specially seeing the people who have worked so hard and passed the winning post haha -
52  The BrillKids Forum / BrillKids Announcements / Re: Our Forums Just Got Better: New Boards and Sections! on: August 26, 2008, 09:02:17 AM
True - but I forgot to change the LH side margin to allow me to fasten them together - so I am having to shuffle them about -

'bright idea' (light bulb) (we don't have a smiley for one of those do we?)

I could put the sheets back to back in clear file pockets  yes   Oh !! I'm learning !!
53  The BrillKids Forum / BrillKids Announcements / Re: Our Forums Just Got Better: New Boards and Sections! on: August 26, 2008, 08:49:17 AM
I just realised how silly this makes me look

We hail computers as the way forward - so we no longer need vast libraties of the printed word to trawl through - but I have faithfully printed out all the recent 'How To' sheets to make it quicker when I want to try something which is not familiar. I can have the relevant page beside me to save changing screens.
Of course I see what I have done -  In effect I have made a hard copy manual about how to use the software.  blush
Little Reader goes from strength to strength - in three weeks that I have been a member it has transformed from 'good' to 'better' - I think that by the end of BETA testing LR will be the BEST  yes
54  BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Re: Attention All Beta Testers - Extend your Little Reader License! on: August 25, 2008, 10:10:23 PM
Kristina - Hi!!  smile
You can continue with the little reader by getting an Extension License!
Have you looked at the top of the forum where you typed you post? It should say Extend your Little Reader License and that will take you to August 31st.
In fact if you scroll up the screen where you posted your message just and read message #169 there are instructions for extending it yourself. I hope you manage it so you can stay with us  yes
I hope I have explained this clearly and that it is helpful.
55  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Favorite Children's books on: August 25, 2008, 08:12:21 PM

"The Very Hungry Caterpillar"
"Each Peach Pear Plum"
"Rich Cat Poor Cat"
"Hairy McLairy" (all the series)
"Thomas the Tank Engine " (all the books)
"Thats not my Tractor" (touchy feely - there are several in the series)
"The Large and Growly Bear"
"Who Took The Farmer's Hat?"
56  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: e-book (Bring Out Your Child's Genius) to download for free on: August 24, 2008, 07:52:31 PM
I downloaded and opened it with no problems.

Good find ola  smile
57  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Confusion - any tips? on: August 24, 2008, 04:41:12 PM
By the way - if the little learner gets the whole thing wrong - I would suggest simply repeating the correct word/action yourself in very bright positive tone and move on to the next card. Then I would make sure of doing that one again in the near future to reinforce it.

I heard that when children learn to read when they get to primary school - they will need at least 16 repetitions at intervals for every word/letter they see in order to internalise it - this applies whether its a whole word or phonics method. Then reinforcement later increasing the interval with revisions every week.
Remember that is for kids of 5yrs up - think how much quicker our kids are drinking it all in - they are like sponges just soaking it up.

The way we do it - they learn in a small family group - even one to one - that is more valuable than one teacher trying to turn 24 or more kids into enthusiastic readers who love books.

Also I think the same is bound to apply when we have the benefit of "Little Math" and "Little Musician"  Wink
By the time they go to school I'm sure they will have time for so many more interesting things to learn.
58  BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Re: Your opinions on Import organization and folders on: August 24, 2008, 04:16:11 PM
My choice would be:-
"1. Auto-creating an "Imported" folder and having all imports automatically go into that folder"

I agree with nohayo and koala girl - make an "imported" folder - I do think that someplace ought to be given so you know who created the category.
At the moment, like koala girl I'm still finding my way around, and some way of distinguishing new Categories from those which I have already seen and sifted through would be good.
If sub categories are possible then I think that would make things a lot easier - like I have when I (try to  rolleyes ) sort out my photos.
59  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Confusion - any tips? on: August 24, 2008, 09:37:21 AM
Thats the idea  yes
I find the best way is to avoid the negative - ie turn it into a positive by praising the bit of response thats right, and reinforcing the response that you hope for. He'll get there  big grin
60  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Confusion - any tips? on: August 23, 2008, 10:05:35 PM
Hello  smile

I think you are doing really well that he is realising that "arms up" is to do with arms - and I agree that its a shame to remove them now. Maybe have a day or two without those ones?

However you might try this tip... make sure he is always right with lots of praise - for instance - if he  recognises "arms up" by moving his arms down - you say "YES  smile ARMS !!  - then you hold his arms up and say YES!! arms UP !!  So when the "arms down" one comes along do the same thing moving his arms downwards.

Seems to me that he will at least start to enjoy the flashcard game again  yes

I don't pretend to be an expert - even after doing baby reading with my eldest (now grown up) and trying LR with my 3 youngest grandsons who stay over frequently. Also no-one knows your son as well as YOU do LOL
