47  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Your little readers.. on: June 08, 2009, 10:22:42 AM
hi there yqueen.

i dont think that what your child is doing is normal.
it has to be an amazing gift.
maybe its Gods way of letting us know that no matter what we research and teach, God still has power over everything and i guess this is a miracle!

look after your precious angel!
48  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: Any Progress with teaching Math? on: June 04, 2009, 11:22:47 AM
hi there

regarding LM and maths program, you must follow a schedule. too much and its boring. too little or inconsistent and its ineffective. you cant be random about it.

you must give it a try as every child is different and you cant judge whether it will work 4 u from another person success or failure.

i am 7 weeks into the program and i havnt done a problem solving test as yet. when i see results 4 sure will let u know

good luck

49  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Questions to Domans on: June 04, 2009, 10:56:25 AM
LOL karma to you nikita.

i also find the stuff expensive and i have the doman cd roms vol 1 and 2. it could have been put in one cd.

i live in SA so its 20$ times 8

the maths concerns as well.

i guess when one attends the course you can see for yourself how to teach and see the kids doing maths. doman does say that the kids in the institute can do the instant maths and different types of equations.

i think a new doman book is needed with all of their new research and findings and experiences. im sure they must be aware of powerpoint presentations and new ways of making resources.
50  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Motivation .... and getting it all done? on: June 02, 2009, 07:11:32 AM
i know exactly what u guys are saying!

it gets tough especially when i am under the weather or just have too much to do.

my previous schedule had reading maths grossmotor skills development running for an hour french generalknowledge arabic finmotorskills writing skills islamic studies ball skills etc

today i have decided to change my schedule.

i now have 2 schedules.

1. is important. these are my priorities. they include maths reading languages  phonics and general knowledge.

2. includes the rest of the stuff thats fine if i dont complete. like running and ball skills writing etc.

now i dont feel overwhelmed
51  Parents' Lounge / Coffee Corner - General Chat / Re: I've betrayed you all on: May 28, 2009, 05:27:03 PM
 LOL

what can you do?! not everyone is receptive to this.
i use to tell people that my son can read and feel like a real idiot afterwards.
most of the time i get an "okay!"
i want to scream
"its not okay its amaazingg!!"

oh well.

i still make myself look silly as i want every child to beable to read and do maths and whatever else there is.
52  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: challenges facing a gifted child on: May 22, 2009, 08:29:14 PM
jdhanota

all children have the potential to be gifted but not all are because their caregiver may not have stimulated them.

tanikit

i know what you mean. even crawford doesnt seem good enough for me but in the article they mentioned a school called radfordhouse which is for gifted kids but then that limits them to only being around gifted kids. but i guess kids in the institutes in philadelphia are around gifted kids aswell. the article was from the living and loving the april issue.

i once showed my pead that Sa'ad could read and a few people as well, not to show off but to truly make them believe that this is something so possible. i regret doing that because i think he feels a little pressure. janet doman said that when you test a child you are taking back the knowledge you gave. i am now not even going to say he reads or is doing maths in his presence because i think that makes him feel like he has to live up to an expectation.

as young as they are they can sense these things.
53  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: will this "trick" while teaching Doman Math do any harm? on: May 22, 2009, 07:25:05 AM
i was wondering about that too.

i am using the little einstein icons and when Sa'ad sees them he says
ooooohh rocket oooooh einsteeinnnsss!!

i can show him 15 number quantitys instead of 10 and 4 equations per session.

dont know if he is concentrating on einsteins or maths

but doman does say that learning is effortless for them and that they wont appear to be concentrating but will still soak up info
54  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Bilingual in Arabic and English on: May 19, 2009, 07:21:19 PM
thanx nohayo for your positive response.

it would help me a great deal as your uploads are stunning and you have put up sooo much. maybe i should learn to read them without the signs or look them up in a dictionary and learn the signs of that word and say it that way. yes thats what i need to do.

thanks again and karma to you

55  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / challenges facing a gifted child on: May 19, 2009, 07:13:49 PM
i was reading through a magazine article that a friend recommended to me about the gifted child.

i think all our kids that are on the special programmes and schedules that we have created for them are gifted.
unfortunately babies reading can be regarded by people who dont know about all this  as a gift.

we know that every child has potential and every child can do these amazing things provided that they are given the opportunity. our kids are not really gifted but have people who care about them enough to teach them and invest in them from when they are tiny.

here is abit of what the article has to say.

please comment

what are the challenges facing "gifted kids"

there is a social challenge as the " gifted child" vocabulary or sense of humor may be a little more advanced and hence not be "age appropriate". this may make them feel misunderstood.

there are few opportunities for gifted children to hone their skills and be taught at a level they can appreciate.this can lead to them suffering a great deal when they are understimulated or unrecognised in schools.

although gifted children need the company of friends to play with, compete with in sports or to simply have fun with, many of them choose older friends and sometimes they even choose adults to these tthings with them.

gifted children also experience "asynchronicity". this means that they can be a mixture of different ages.eg. a six yr old may enjoy riding a bicycle with other six yr olds but she is capable of discussing the injustices of the world at the level of a 10 yr old. this same 6 year old may have the response of a 4 yr old when it comes to being scared of the dark.

supporting your gifted child.

1.listen to your child and try to understand the difficulty she sometimes faces.
2.be prepared to advocate on your childs behalf at schools that are not prepared to change the standard of their worksheets or to make learning more interestingfor the child at her particular level of ability or pre-knowledge.
3. try not to be too preoccupied by the success your child may attain or have attained.
4. nurture your gifted child without pushing.

please share your experiences with your child and how he handles his/her "gift"
56  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Bilingual in Arabic and English on: May 19, 2009, 06:31:20 PM
was!

i am also experiencing the same problem.
i can write and read arabic but i dont understand it quite well or speak it.
i studied arabic throughout high school and 2nd year university but i just cant grasp it. i have to read the sentence a few times to understand it.

there is an arabic course offered in SA so im going to try to enroll.

i also cannot read the files uploaded by nohayo as i cant read the arabic without the signs on the word (fatha damma and kasra)

nohayo if you read this please help
57  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Encyclopedic Knowledge / Re: Could anybody who bought doman "bit of intelligence card" comment ? on: May 18, 2009, 09:21:02 PM
hi there

i have 3 sets of the bit of intelligence cards that a friend has lent me.
they are really good. just for the information. i just dont have time to put together that info.

the shipping cost is alot. so i wont get my own just yet unless i know of someone going there that could bring them.

if it is affordable for you then go for it. you wont regret it.
58  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: do you limit your child's playtime in any way in order to teach him/her? on: May 18, 2009, 09:09:19 PM
theres no turning back once they are 2.

i think that its their personality. they are too absorbed with their environment. they also like their toys. moodiness does start to set in. they are also very egocentric.

i havent limited playtime as i teach while he is playing. i have to catch him when i want to teach but the flashing is so fast especially with LR and LM that he does not even know what hit him!

they need to learn about their environment and learn about themselves too. if i didnt finish my target of story books or specific activity because he was too busy for it i just do it the next day. i rather make the most of happy times then teach when he is unhappy. its not easy though.

this is such a challenging age.

good luck!
59  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: When did you see results? on: May 18, 2009, 12:11:49 PM
hi there.

i would like to share my experience and some advice.

i started the baby program at 3 months or earlier. you know, when you show the contrasting pics. i then waited till six months to begin words. i was on an off on the program. not at all consistent coz i didnt know if he was learning. i knew he liked it though. he read mama at 12 months or earlier not too sure. he started speaking earlier. i introduced dots but wasnt consistent.

he now reads lots of words.

my advice to all parents with tiny babies (birth 2 a year)

do not stop your program.

if you can be more consistent the better.

i wish that when i started at 6 months i was more consistent.

i wish i had started maths when he was six months.

a six month old is way easier to teach than a 2 yr old.  a 2 yr old is going through emotional upheavals but a six mnth old just soaks it all up.

introduce reading and maths as early as possible coz your LO is learning. i know its hard coz u cant test but if you know what i know now then you will start a consistent program early.

treat your tiny baby like a 6 year old and yourself like a teacher. you wouldnt let your six year old skip class. the same with the tiny baby.

skip class only if the fail safe law is broken which is
"if you arent having a wonderful time and your child isnt having a wonderful time then STOP you are doing something wrong" (doman)
60  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: Too late for Doman Math? on: May 18, 2009, 11:54:03 AM
thanx for all your posts.

it makes me feel better about not understanding the method of maths and hence implementing it only 2 weeks ago.

one thing that i have learnt that consistency is the key.
nevermind the late start. just believe again and be consistent.

maths is a language and if taught correctly and consistently it can give success.

i dont want to test Sa'ad but one day i asked him
"how many bites do you have on your plate?"

he mumbled "five"

of course when i pestered him he didnt say it again but it is hope!
