EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: For non-native speakers: using the foreign language in public

Mmmmm.... definitely not! Although not many people around here have an acceptable English level, I don't feel comfortable using it in public with my children. In fact I don't feel comfortable with anything related to early learning in public... Some days ago my twins (17 months old) started spelling a word they were seeing in a public notice board and all the mums around there were looking at me as if I were beating them... I still have to find my way in relation to this...

You have definitely done an amazing work with her elmo0209, and your girl must be really smart! Congratulations! I totally agree with Mandabplus in keeping her at home with you if it's possible. I also think a lot about preschool, the problem is that I have no choice. We live in a very small village with only two possible preschools, and I'm just considering one of them. I don't know if my twins will be so advanced as yours when they turn two this summer, but what I know is that they won't teach them to read a single letter at least in three more years, they will just paint and sing. They can sightread a lot of words in English and Spanish, know the alphabet, colors, shapes, planets, they read and sing the notes in Little Musician, etc. But I have a full time job and no chance to stay at home with them. They don't need to socialize with other children for the moment as they have each other and they are with my mother now but she needs a rest! So they will definitely go to pre-school. But I'm so worried about the lack of resources they will have there...

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Reading a whole YBCR lesson at 15 mo!

Yes, I used that file and some others that you can find on Brillkids library. I edited some of them and even changed the voice recordings in some cases where our Spanish (European) pronountiation differs much from Latin American pronountiation. I didn't want to confuse my children with c's, z's, g's and j's as they were at the same time learning the alphabet... Also some of the original recordings are great, but in my opinion others are too slow, so I recorded them myself. I don't do it much better, but for my children it was funny that it was my voice in there! If you are interested, send me a message with your email address and I will send to you all the YBCR Spanish files that I have.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Saxon Math Workbook Master?

Hello, I'm looking for Saxon 5/4 book in Spanish. I could help my girl with English, but I would prefer that she can work on it more independently. I have found in amazon "Saxon Math 5/4: Workbook Master Spanish". Could you tell me if this is the "standard" Saxon text? What does "Workbook Master" mean? Thank you very much in advance.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Music / Re: Convince me that I should buy LM!

It is by far the Brillkids program that my twins (17 mo) enjoy the most. In just a few sessions my little girl was singing the notes and both of them were clapping and pretending to be music directors. We all have soooo much fun with it! And I'm learning a lot as well...

For us (girl and boy, twins) it has been, 12 months: Little Reader (English), Little Math, self-made power point presentations for Spanish (mother tongue) 16 months: Little Musician, encyclopedic knowlege (shapes, monuments, planets, etc.) Currently at 17 months, they are sightreading lots of words in Spanish, some less in English but knowing the vocabulary, knowing Spanish alphabet, numbers from 0 to 10, counting to four-five, reading and singing chords and notes in Little Musician, 2D and 3D shapes, dozens of animal names, etc... And that's it more or less. Now I'm turning to phonics in Spanish (thank you TeachingMyToddler for the alphabet song, a great success!!) and plan to begin with Soft Mozart this summer, when they're 2 yo. But I'm in constant learning and re-planning with the ideas that I get from this forum!

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Advice on teaching phonics, please

Thank you very much TmT, I will have a look at your videos. We are using the last version of LR, and many times they also lose interest during the phonics sessions, or the girl tries to read the words in Spanish... (good news is that she succeeds). So, I will emphasize phonics in Spanish and continue with sight words in both English and Spanish.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Advice on teaching phonics, please

Hello, As I have posted before, I'm doing EL with my twins since they were 12 mo. Now they are 17 mo, and we are really making progress in different fields. My little girl can sightread a lot of words in English and Spanish, recognises the numerals up to 10, shapes (2D and 3D), she's reading all the notes in Little Musician, etc. All this is quite "normal" because this is what I've been teaching them every day during these five months. But yesterday she really surprised me by saying almost the whole alphabet (she missed 4 or 5 letters). And this is something that I just had shown them two or three times because I thought it was too abstract for their age. So, my question is, given the fact that she knows the alphabet and that we speak Spanish, which is simpler in terms of phonics than English, do you think I should turn to phonics in teaching her to read in Spanish and keep the sightwords for English? And what should I do with my boy, as I don't know if he's learnt the alphabet or not? (he doesn't perform at all) I try to teach them at the same time, because I have a full time job and we don't have much time during the day. Thank you very much for your time and advices, I really appreciate the help that you always provide in this forum.
