On the subject of pennies we also take our dot cards and I let him put 1 penny on each dot. Sometimes I will have him count out the number he will need for a card first and then put them on. I also consider it an exercise in manual dexterity.

Good thread idea! One thing we do is I write the numbers 1-5 on little sticky note paper then lay each note in front of an individual small pyrex bowel. I then give him a pile of pennies and have him put the right number in each bowel. We play lots of variations too like I put pennies in the bowel and he puts the right note in front of them or I leave the notes in order and have him put the notes in the right order in front of them.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Encyclopedic Knowledge / Re: to teach it or not to teach it?
|
on: December 02, 2008, 02:18:20 AM

We teach the encyclopedic knowledge. When you show a child pictures/flashcards of people/objects you are giving them the pegs to hang future information on and the encyclopedic knowledge in that information. What is the benefit of being able to identify George Washington if you don't know who he was or what he did and how he connects to other famous people/event in history? Encyclopedic knowledge provides this framework so a child can make the connections.

We are going to be teaching piano when Blaise turns 3. Violin is the classical Suzuki instrument and as such is specifically mentioned in Doman's books. One reason for it's popularity is that it is portable and can be brought to lessons, it is obtainable in small sizes appropriate for young children and it is easy to rent/buy whereas larger instruments (like the piano) many people may not have at their home and may be too expensive to rent/buy.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / Re: Physical Program- Schedules?

We were trying to follow the "How to make your baby physically supurb" book. So what I should be doing with him now is working on the running aspect. However, secondary to where we live there is no where safe to go running (shootings in the school parking lot where the track is, parks with drug deals going down, kids being run over and killed on the sidewalks, etc...) So, I am at a loss what to do. We could drive to a park that is safe but they are a ways a way so its not feasible to do daily.
We do work on tumbling and he does forward rolls daily. Backward rolls are not happening. We also work on fine motor skills like tracing, lacing beads and lacing cards. And during the summer we swim almost everyday.
I just feel like he has so much energy right now and no way to burn it off. I really want to have a more structured program and also somehow figure out a way to incorporate more endurance type activity.

The same thing happened to me. I think it may be a bug or something. You can download files in the little reader library and they will work fine with the sound too. What I did was find the files without sound and re-downlaod them. Maybe one of the administrators has a better idea?

There was a man called Fred 'Rise and Shine' said he, and got off the bed.
Fred never complains, he is always happy He smiled and would make his hands clap, clap, clappy
He lives all alone and yet, There isn't a person he hasn't met!
Every morning, he goes to town, Where he performs in the circus as a Dare-Devil clown
He can juggle 25 balls with only one hand while making phone calls
Fred's best at trapeze, where he flies in the air As his wife Frieda uses her toes to catch him by his hair
Why Frieda and Fred live apart, no one knows But the truth is fred’s wife is the best in the women rows
Fred's favourite pastime is to fish by the lake He'd hook herrings, halibuts, hoki and hake!
Fred likes eating bun , he enjoys the fun And when he's done, he'll head into the forest for a run
The only thing he won't tell you, or even ask you to do, Is to say his ten times table, or if he could count to twenty two.
Alas one fine day, a realization hit him His moustache had grown so long that he badly needs a trim and so off to the barber he did go, to trim the moustache and his right big toe.
Just then his long lost son Freddie turned up with 2 bags of laundry and a little brown pup He jumped in the air and shouted with glee "I'm home Mom and Dad! Make my bed up for me!"
Up stairs he goes to take a nap
