62  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / CHESS and a 2 year old on: March 01, 2009, 11:30:04 AM
For Christmas I received a beautiful chess set.  My 2 year old discovered the pieces inside the drawer yesterday.... He claims he "Likes chess"" when I told him what it was.  He liked the 2 horses a mommy horse, and a daddy one.

My dilemma... I cant wait for my  children to learn to play chess... Ill finally have someone to play with smile  since my husband doesnt play... but I dont know at what age to teach or how to introduce it... has anyone had any experience?
Also my set is really nice, I am sure part of the reason for my sons interest, because he has seen me before playing with our old set and had taken no interest... I dont want to sound mean but part of me has a 2 year old instinct in me to say THATS MINE.... any tips.

63  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: What do you do with your 7 month-old? on: March 01, 2009, 11:19:54 AM
I started heavily signing from 6 months up... although I signed earlier I only concentrated on 5  signs up to then... milk, more, all done, light, and potty ... and then shortly after eat and drink ... the different foods as I introduced them got signs.
My 7 month old loves the math. I do recommend the math at this age... according to Doman the math is easier to do at this stage then reading.

I do a music appreciation with my 7 month old

As for crafts I recently did yogurt painting with finger paint in his high chair with food coloring explaining how to make different colors

Bubble blowing is a BIG hit

Scarf playing and dancing (lots of spinning) is a fun activity.

I do find that this is a stage where they get bored a little easier... they want to be more active but dont have the capability... they cant sit too long because they want to do everything and touch everything and want to be included in everything...

We do a lot of poems as I switch him from room to room with me... Im always talking to my kids ( I have finger rhymes and poem books in every room of the house and often will print a song off the internet and post it to my bathroom mirror and sing it while im getting ready

I do shape tracing as an activity and trace different shapes with their fingers... cirlces on glasses, squares on tupperware.

Hope that helps!! yes

LOVE THIS!!! Thanks.  I am noticing m son while he recognises many words at 2 he hant tarted reading books on his own yet....

He knws thesound each letter makes... and  recogises each letter so I am going to ry phonics combos more this week... see if I can give him some added help.  The word recognition has worked well for themost part but i think my son needs just a lttle something more to help explain something... so thanks

68  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: The Importance of Toddler Toys in Brain Development on: February 27, 2009, 07:21:42 AM
I completely agree that it is very important for stimulation fo toodlers and preschoolers to have access to many different kids of activity, book on different subjects and physical activity.

I think a lot of parents should take a look at second hand stores.... I get tons of books there for .10 - .50 cents canadian a piece... you cant beat that!!! Plus many of the books were not even used and in perfect condition... its also a great place for puzzles, and childrens games like memory, mechanical toys, and wooden toys!!
PLus many times once your done with the toy you can post it on line and sell it for more then what you paid for it!! LOL even with books!!

Dear DadDude,

Below is a link to The Classical Mommy site, with .ppt for more sentences according to the Doman method.  She attended the IAHP How to Increase Your Baby's Intelligience Course in Philadelphia and has great materials online.

And the link below has her Bits of Intelligience .ppt:

please be sure to read Ayesha

this is thelassicalmommys view of doman method.....
Whil personally I think she does go to the extremes in some cases she has some great and valid points... inluding her experience

THanks DadeDude... your presentations are awesome!!!!

Ayesha Nicole you certainly are feverent about Doman... does your child attend the oncampus school?

DadDude I attended the course at te IAHP and the biggest thing I got from the course was that you could teach your child anything as long as it was taught in a joyous manner.  Quite honestly, the classes were an exact copy of the books along with in person lectures and demonstrations from the students... the children of the age of 3 and other showed no proof that they were reading as testing is against the doman method... 5 year old in the demonstration did read..... as do many other 5 year old children whose parents are feverent in assuring that their children get the best posible education from the home setting.

THat being said... I believe that the Mr. Doman was a founder in bringing into light the teaching of children... as were many other key individuals.  THere are other programs such as Kumon, and montessori which are also very good in the math area... being a member of various online forums I have never seen a child actually perform the multiplication and division solely via the doman method effectively by the age of the 3.  So either the program is unrealistic or it doenst work and a combination of methods must be used....

In general I do believe a program custom designed by parents for their children is necessary.  Doman, Montessorri, Tweedlewink, etc. are all ways to help a parent achieve their goals... it doesnt matter which method you use... it is the parent the suceeds... many parents have done so without the help of these great thinkers... such as Einstein's parents really knowing math at 3, churchell saying his mother taught him to read at three, adam smith etc etc.

Hence one again hats of to you and all the other parents who have taught their children to read so young...

73  Parents' Lounge / Coffee Corner - General Chat / Re: Toddlers nap on: February 26, 2009, 05:12:20 AM
Mine is 28 months old.... naps are a struggle.... i kinda call the shots though... I let him know that he can stay up if he is awake and happy... if ot h needs to take a nap... he understands this and is pretty good... whether he naps or not hes down usually at the same time every night... I find the less I make  big deal about sleep the better sleep he gets.
