EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Working moms

I can relate to that, I had the same issues plus I was a horrible homemaker to begin with .so with the added responsibility of parenting, needless to say, it was hard.
But I tried using tips from 'flylady.com or .net' really helped me. . Also , involve your child . I know your baby is too little to "help" you but provide a running commentary for her as you work, tlak about what you are doing, it will increase her vocabulary as well. So you entertain her/him and finish your work at the same time.
Later when your child is old enough , encourage basic activities, cleaning up after himself, sorting silverware into compartments, sorting laundry, . these are great hands on tasks .

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Would you prefer teaching British English than US English?
|
on: May 21, 2009, 03:43:09 PM

Well , personally I would not mind any, considering my accent . But honestly we were used to British English Spellings (not accent) and when I started working in US , I had difficulty in communicating with my patients, ,my colleagues , over the terms used not so much about my accent. I still write "colour" instead of "Color" when I am not really thinking about spellings . But as they say, "when in Rome....So I am trying to adjust to American English. e.g. I preferred saying "pacifier " instead of "dummy". But for sure I am not saying "y'all"

Local Support Groups / General Discussions / Advice regarding Classical music
|
on: May 20, 2009, 04:02:08 PM

Hello, Most of us have read about classical music helping to boost IQ. But so far I have read more about Mozart/Bach etc. I would like to know how have you introduced Indian classical music to your children, are there any specific instruments /raagas which you would recommend? I am completely untrained in any kind of music, so any help in greatly appreciated, thanks

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / Re: Home Made Writing Tool

that was a great idea of the converted legging container but I come from an old school of thought about handwriting. I personally have not used the tadoodle products . IMO, they allow the use of certain muscles which are not precursors to writing (mass prehension versus tripod pinch). I believe in pre-writing activites which then lead to effective tripod pinch. I think this topic was discussed a few months ago.

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: How do you schedule so many learning products
|
on: May 20, 2009, 03:21:59 PM

I hear you Sapna, I am in the same boat. Last week I had reached the pinnacle of being completely haphazard with these activites and I stopped and wrote down my goals for my childs education/development and made a list of things I would surely do and other list of things I could do if i have time and energy. It helped me that I had a decent schedule of LM and LR and EK. Now i am in process of reviewing some products to see which I can add. But between activites for fine-motor, physical development, having my child assist for daily activites in the kitchen , going to parks, libraries, my work and my hobbies and most importantly , my husband!!, it is hard to fit in most of the things. So like I said I will prioritize and not worry about things which I cannot fit in at this point, reshuffle topics like Little pim for sometime followed by tweedlewink for some days .

BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Question about naming folders
|
on: May 18, 2009, 07:08:32 PM
|
Alright , this is a very silly question and I am sure I will have a mental head slap once I find the answer but can anyone help me in regards to naming folders? When I create new folders , I type the heading but it is not saved. Also , the edit button is grayed out so I am not able to use that. Is there a specific way to do it .I searched the forum but was unable to find the solution. Meanwhile I feel silly stuck with folder 1,folder2.
thanks

Wow , thanks for sharing this. This would be a good idea for the future books (stage 3 onwards for Doman reading too) I loved the binder idea along with the sleeve protector. I think this makes the job easy and the book becomes easy to care for. BTW the pictures look very very nice, bold and attractive. they stand out very well compared to other commercial books which have a lot of extraneous materials as well. Karma points to you.

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: What To Teach 4 Week Old
|
on: May 15, 2009, 06:42:46 PM

Things I would work on with a 4 week old- 1) try to establish good routines for basic needs 2) Light instrumental music by the crib for some time 3) tummy time (which you already are doing) 4) Spend time talking with her/him while he/she is the bouncer 5) infant stimulation cards 6) Sing some songs 7) Weather permitting going out to the park for strolls 8)Towards the second month- more of visual stimulation with small toy (1-2 toys , not more) 9) Sensory stimulation by giving him/her textured blanket/toy to hold 10) Just cuddle your child and watch her, devour every minute, they grow up too quickly I would not have her/him view any TV or word cards at this time. Their nervous system is not ready for that. Having said that , just like octaviaorca , I would say you are doing good at this time. Enjoy this time.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Which DVD other than LR?A

thank you so much for all the responses, I am signing with my child but just what i read through books. Is signing time still good for a child of 20 months and does it use ASL? Also I have read some good reviews about leapfrog letter/word factory.I am going to check if my library has that. Anjie, thanks for your response too, I had rented preschool prep for colors and shapes and honestly I found it tooo boring(but its not for me...i know!) and my daughter gave me the usual, "is that all you can do" kind of look. Also showing the you-tube idea is great just to check out things. but i would love to see how the "meet the sight words" turns out to be. meanwhile I had some good results with just a few weeks of YBCR and will see if I can find a good deal at Amazon. Thanks again for all your support!

Thank you for sharing this link. I like way the activities are organized for pre-writing, lifeskills etc. I have been doing some of these with my child but I am definitely not keeping a good record or planning it for the week. I think I sould start more meticulous planning. Also for other activites in the same vein , try reading Maja Pitamics , Teach me to do it myself. It is really good.
