61  EARLY LEARNING / Homeschooling / Re: Homeschoolers, is 'The Well-Trained Mind' book the best homeschool curriculum? on: December 06, 2011, 05:07:41 PM
Thank you all for the wonderful resources that some I had forgotten. I agree with lots of comments on here. Great job everyone. I don't know if I could add any more useful info but please make sure you check with the Home School Legal Defense Association regarding your government's laws regarding homeschooling. I can tell you what we use in our homeschool outreach as far as curriculum but each state, government, country is different regarding guidelines of homeschooling. If you are looking for paper form to purchase we use ACE Ministries, for virtual schools to purchase we use www.abcmouse.com and www.time4learning.com, and completecurriculum.com, we also use more than anything are free resources. We use www.sascurriculumpathways.com, www.lessonpathways.com, www.hubbardscupboard.org, www.carlscorner.us.com, and many others. I do agree on two things about homeschooling content; 1: relegious views or secular 2:your childs needs, abilities, interests (online virtual school or paper form or f'ree form', using books to make your own curriculum) 3: your financial situation when considering which curriculum is the best, and do you have the time to prepare the content chosen, for some curriculums you have to prepare an hour or 2 ahead of time. I will say that with some of our students we have had just trial and error choosing the right curriculum that fit the child's abilities, needs, and or interests and that fit into the parent's budget, that's why we use mostly free resources due to changing curriculum after a trial run for 2 weeks with each child.
If you are looking for a curriculum all rolled into one well there are some out there but really and truly it depends upon your child and what your goals are for teaching your child, secular or faith based, and other opinions. There are curriculums out there that say they are a well rounded curriculum that has everything but to be honest there isn't for we all are individuals with all of our own ideas and teaching methods. So you may have to build your own. If you are really concerned about following a step by step premade curriculum then purchase a copy of the books or rent a copy of the books that your local school uses. Here we can purchase books at the beginning of the school year from the schools, but they are expensive here around 36-100.00 for one book. Our counties post a list of the textbooks approved to use each year on their websites.
We use textbooks as well but to be honest I am always editing stuff out or adding stuff in. However, you could try using www.wikiuniversity.com and other wiki websites that you can create your own textbook via their website in pdf or print form for FREE. I am currently doing that now for our outreach for highschoolers. They also have wikijunior and a lot of others full of resources.
I haven't checked out the book 'the well trained mind' so I can't say if i would use it or not, but I hope in the near future I will have the time to do so and get back with you regarding that book.
Thank you all for the resources.

63  EARLY LEARNING / Homeschooling / Re: creation science with biblical worldview? on: December 06, 2011, 04:31:23 PM
for 18 month old may I recommend www.daniellesplace.com and kidzone.com for curriculum biblical based. This is what we use in our homeschool outreach and co-op. You do have to pay but it is worth it.

For us in KY there is a CREATION MUSEUM that we have and it is on a Biblical Worldview and it is great, They offer homeschoolers special rates as well. There should be a virtual tour on their website along with printable resources. I will see if I can post some here. I will update as soon as I can with links. Try searching for the 'Creation Musuem' in KY with Bing ot Google in the meantime.
66  EARLY LEARNING / Homeschooling / Re: creation science with biblical worldview? on: November 30, 2011, 07:59:03 PM
So true. It does seem to be taking over as a matter of fact here in my state they have now in the public schools are offering the Biblical View of Science to the high school students. There was a big law suit and everything over it. There are some but they are very expensive that comes with DVD's however ACE Ministries, Life Pac, Switch on Schoolhouse, etc have the curriculum you are seeking. I do have a high school accredited homeschool that offers it as well. What grade are you needing it for? I can help you better of I know the grade level that you are seeking. ACE runs 40.00 not counting shipping and the DVDs for the entire year. I would suggest them. Let me know because we can go in halfs maybe on the content. Since we are seeking to be umbrelled under ACE we can get it maybe cheaper? You can search ebay for your curriculum as well from the companies mentioned above. Let me know.

69  EARLY LEARNING / Homeschooling / Re: Share your curriculum ideas on: November 17, 2011, 04:20:50 AM
msocorro,
in regards of teaching children together you can however you need to deligate things to do individually, for example I have a 4 a 3 and 15 month old. I have made a curriculum that fits all three but rolled into one curriculum so I am actually teaching 3 levels in one lesson. I first set the older child on the computer, then give him his worksheet to complete then comes the second child on the computer then I give him his worksheet, then I go back to the oldest with a hands on game for him to play then I go to the third child on the computer, etc. etc. I have different centers set up in my home for them to travel each day once they have traveled all of the centers come drama, music, or play time for all three. We started with the recorder and a small child's size piano then we moved to the xylophone. Their fav is the recorder. Then it is back to the centers again to finish the day then it is story time with a book or electronic educational toys that reads, then to the computer for educational game time or an educational tv show. We also delicate days say Monday is reading, phonics, vocabulary Tues is Math, hand on games, etc.
Teaching several children can be very hard at one time but having the right curriculum that can be versatile is the key and ofcourse cost effecient. I myslef have taught 20 children from ages 5-12 in one class room it was difficult but if you allow the older child to assist the smaller child then social skills and peer interaction occurs as well.
One tip when teaching children who can't sit in a childs chair yet is to have them in highchairs. I started all of my children out in high chairs, so now they automatically go to their chairs when I say it is time for school. Of course the 15 month old is still in the highchair and the other 2 have their own table and chairs all throughout the house for our centers. For example the fridge makes a great place for magnetic alphabet.
70  EARLY LEARNING / Homeschooling / Re: Share your curriculum ideas on: November 15, 2011, 06:10:24 AM
Thanks everyone for the detailed lists. We are now using complete curriculum.
71  EARLY LEARNING / Homeschooling / Re: Complete Curriculum on: November 13, 2011, 03:51:07 AM
Just to let everyone know this went up to 75.00 a year but to be honest it is worth it. I purchased it today and I have already created my own digital textbooks with audio so to me with teaching multiple children this is ideal. It not only has the student text but the teachers as well.

This is a math website that I use for the domino method of teaching math. Has some free printables! Check it out.
73  EARLY LEARNING / Homeschooling / Re: To homeschool or not to homeschool on: November 13, 2011, 03:46:46 AM
It is hard to juggle homeschooling if you work or if you have multiple children in the home. Believe me with 3 of my own and 17 others to homeschool, plus my housework, church and husband and his business it is hard. However, be sure to check with your state or government about homeschooling laws. Be sure you are able to homeschool and on what guidelines. Some states and or governments have regulations and so forth. Homeschooling if done and scheduled right you can achieve it no matter what your situation is. Having a good plan and a well thought out curriculum that has already been prepared for you will assist, and if you are worried about getting burned out remember homeschooling is more than sitting down and completing a plan or schedule or a curriculum but it is about also learning in any environment that you may be in.

Flashmom1 you are on a good thought about overwhelming the child after school. Some children I see come home so exhausted from having to put up with the society and with the content that sometimes they may not engage in family activities or extra activities as they should, their interest levels may be decreased.  children who may be more advanced or who may need a little assistance may get left behind or sometimes overlooked in a regular classroom so therefore the child gets bored. So my advice is that if you have a 'gifted' child or 'talented' child then sometimes homeschooling or an afterschool program is the key or hiring a private tutor. If you are concerned about yourself getting burned out then remember to ask a friend or family member to assist you for a week sort of like career day. Go to work with granny or etc. Sometimes family members can relieve some of the burn out from you and your child. We often at our co-op delicate teaching responsibilities to others at times. Finding the right curriculum as well to assist you will help as well for example i have some parents who both work so they chose an online academy, a mom who works part time chose online and paper form, so you see no matter what situation that you are in there is a curriculum out there to assist you. And if you are concerned regarding social skills then be sure to check out your local activities like the library, 4H, church groups, homeschool groups or co-ops, afterschool programs, sports, etc. AND if you need help assessing your child let me know I may can help you. We assess our children and the co-op members every 3 months, beginning grade level and exit grade level. And my specialty and training is the gifted and talented program as well.

iwini- homeschooling in India? I have been looking for someone in India that homeschools. My husband will be coming to India on a mission trip in July 2012. I was interested in how many homeschoolers were actually there. If you are interested in setting up your own group then I would start one in your home or a local church. A homeschool group can meet at differernt families homes each week. I would suggest getting a plan of what you want to accomplish at this group, then spread the word to get some help and kids in the group, then set a time and location for each day or once a week. You are welcome to pm me for more info.

Great conversation, ideas, and interests. Thanks everyone!

My advice is a scope and sequence as suggested by Tanikit. I have a set schedule as well; Monday is Reading, english, vocabulary Tues. is math and writing Wed. is Social studies Thurs. is art, life skills, etc. Friday is Science and Health Saturady is Social activities, and Sunday is Bible
74  EARLY LEARNING / Homeschooling / Re: Felt Boards on: October 24, 2011, 05:47:58 PM
Here is another idea about printing onto milk filters for a felt board. http://www.makinglearningfun.com/themepages/DogsFeltBoard.htm There are felt patterns as well. I hope you enjoy. I am going to see about doing this as well just to see how well it works, however, I would say to use an inkjet printer and not a laser printer. A word of caution there.
