EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Preschool Prep or YCCR?

Thank you Teaching My Toddlers! I think I will eventually do both YCCR and the Sight Words from PP, but was curious as to which to do first. My son is only 6 months old, so I am trying to hold off on Leap Frog, and other plot based stories. I am not that worried about doing the PP colors or shapes, as we have so many other things to teach him those that are much more interactive. I don't want to do the PP numbers yet, either. We are currently doing Doman style dot cards, and I would much prefer he focus on learning quantities now and the symbols for numbers later. From what you were saying, I should do the PP Sight Words first, and then YCCR?
Elorm - They are two very different systems. YBCR is a bit more hands off. It also teaches using a more left brain format. LR uses a combination of methods and teaches more words. Since I have pretty limited funds, I chose to get LR Basic to use with the YBCR that we got as a gift. My son likes YBCR better and I like LR better, so I am glad I use both. I have made do with printing my own flash cards to show him rather than having the full deluxe kit. In the long run, I have no idea which will work better, but as long as he can read, I don't care.

I was just wondering where you suggest I go next? My son is almost done with YBCR and is OBSESSED with them. When he got hurt a few weeks ago, all he wanted to do all night was watch YBCR again and again. I definitely want something to fill the void when we are done. Would Preschool Prep or YCCR be better?

Products Marketplace / Product Discussions and Reviews / Your Baby Can Poor Customer Service

My son received Your Baby Can Speak Spanish as a gift for Easter. I have YBCR and Your Baby Can Discover, and am very happy with them, so I was excited about the new set. Anyway, there is something wrong with both DVDs in the set. Eventually, they will play fine, but I cannot see the menu screen to select which segments I want to play (I didn't want him watching the whole 70 minute video at once). There are no scratches, so I called Your Baby Can's customer service. Basically, they told me since the the product was purchased at Wal-Mart, it was their problem to fix. When I asked what to do if I got another set that did the same thing, he said I would just have to take it up with Wal-Mart. There was nothing he could do for me unless I wanted to place an order for another set from them directly.
This seems like a bad policy to me. I don't know if Wal-Mart will let me exchange them since I do not have a receipt or the box anymore. If they do, I am considering just returning it.

The DVDs show music and pitch in addition to the CD.
I noticed the books did that with the shapes also. I think it is because they are just defining them as polygons, not as equilateral ones. One clip from the DVD I saw did distinguish equilateral, isosceles, and scalene triangles. They also showed talked about some other equilateral shapes. I kind of like it. I think I might go back and make the distinctions in the power point slides I was working on for him, so he knows that a heptagon has 7 sides no matter their orientation.

I got mine from the store today and watched a little bit of a couple of the DVDs, just to check it out. I really like it. My 5 year old step daughter watched with me and really enjoyed them. My son was napping, but I think they will hold his attention. They cover a variety of topics. I am particularly happy with the music exposure! I have been looking for more ways to teach him pitch.
I looked at some of the books with my step daughter, and she seemed interested. However, I think they will be a bit over my son's head (5 months). They may be good reinforcement in a few months. I guess I can't complain, the age range on the set says 1-7 years.

I have the book Baby Minds by Acredolo and Goodwyn. They have game suggestions for little ones. For example, setting up patterns. They say to hide a toy or puppet behind your back and pull it out on one side in a pattern, (R, L, R, L). It gets the baby to start looking for patterns in things. They have other suggestions, but I am not remembering them all now. Maybe your library would have it. However, I will warn you, they are anti Doman/flashcards. I kind of follow the philosophy of using multiple educational techniques.
