BrillKids Software / Little Math - General Discussion / Re: "Happy Pumpkin" works a Treat

Hi KL, I am referring to before and after a lesson. My son and I spend more time in front of the LM Home page than the actual lessons because of the stalling games he likes to play (at the moment he pretends that the Home, Playlist, Numbers Library, etc buttons at the top of the screen are stamps or stickers of his favourite storybook characters) and the singing or other fun activities I have become accustomed to engaging him in as soon as we sit down for a LM lesson. Kidudo is certainly not the only LM user having difficulties encouraging a son to pay attention to LM, even though, like my son, Kidudo’s son is obviously paying attention to something that we would think is not really child friendly, the Home pages of your products. Two days ago we sat down to do LM & LR. As usual my son squirmed during LM but when I put on LR he calmed right down. As I was scrolling down to our lesson he started shouting "Dog! Dog! Dog!" I looked all over my screen (the LR screen, the screen saver, etc.) and I couldn't see any dog so I said "There's no dog, honey." and got the lesson going. Yesterday he did the same thing. When the program opened and I was scrolling down to our lesson he again began shouting "Dog, Dog, Dog!" This time I figured out what was going on...on the top of the LR tool bar there is a small icon of a printer. Coming out of the printer is a "page" with the letters d-o-g on it. Turns out there was a dog after all!!!!
My 19 month old also find's LM a chore. He's wiggled and squirmed since the beginning (4 months ago). Now he just looks at anything but the computer screen waiting for it to be over. It almost seems like I'm punishing him. I, too, love math and it pains me to see him so disinterested. He does this with the word family set on LR, too.
I hope this explanation helps you to understand my initial post. Thank you, Mum.

BrillKids Software / Little Math - General Discussion / Cheer Up Little Math
|
on: November 06, 2009, 11:09:03 AM
|
Hello again BrillKids Team, I apologise for my run of suggestions. It seems I am finally clearing a few items from my exceedingly long To-do List. I also like knowing that everyone here on the forum has the opportunity to help you build your wonderful products and repay you in some small way for the amazing difference you make to each day we enjoy learning with our children. The male, female and child voices for the BrillKid's categories and lessons in Little Reader (LR) are very cheerful. However, I think that it is Little Math (LM) that really needs the engaging happy voices, but the English default (Woman) and English (Man) pronunciations are fairly sombre. Could you please consider using the owners of the LR voices to make new cheerful LM pronunciations. Thank you again, Mum.

BrillKids Software / Little Math - General Discussion / Re: Does looking at the math icons distract your toddler from understanding math

I have experienced the same problem. Hello BrillKids Team, Could you please consider creating a “More Shapes” icon set for LM. - If you could only use one icon set, then red dots may be a good choice. Personally speaking, however, I would suggest using at least different shapes and colors instead of just sticking with red dots.
Many months ago I reverted to using shapes instead of the various interesting icons available in LM because when I started intoducing some icons into our red dot very Doman based sessions my son sat on my lap saying “Dogs, dogs, dogs, dogs, dogs” and had no chance of hearing the names of the quantities he was shown. Reverting back to just showing various shapes seems to be working for my son, but it may take a while for your child to get used to the plain looking lessons. Good luck, Mum.

BrillKids Software / Little Math - General Discussion / "Happy Pumpkin" works a Treat
|
on: November 05, 2009, 06:26:10 AM

This could be applied to both LM and LR, but I think it is most important for LM since I read on this forum that many parents and carers seem to have the same problem I have from time to time, capturing a baby's or toddler's attention with LM for just 5 to 10 short seconds.
I don't get concerned if my little one doesn't want to watch each time because I notice from her videos that even DomanMom had this problem and it may just mean that my son knows things before I think he does. But this week the little images of a smiling skull and "Happy Pumpkin" in the Latest News box on the Home page of LM have helped keep his eyes on the screen until the lesson is finished.
Could the BrillKids Team please consider permanently using some of this area to show frequently changing cute images. Maybe a new image each morning and each afternoon/evening.
Is this too much work?
Do other LM users have similar suggestions?
Thank you,
Mum.

BrillKids Software / Little Math - General Discussion / Final Number Fade Out Problem - Suggested LM Improvement
|
on: October 31, 2009, 01:27:11 PM
|
After the last number of a preset or lesson is pronounced, the final image (icon, word or numeral) disappears from the screen in what I will call three stages (meaning it is staggered).
Just say the last number for a lesson is 50 icons, after the 50 is pronounced approximately 12 icons in the area of the screen where the “Latest News” appears on the LM Home page disappear first, followed by the icons in the area above the “Latest News” box and then the rest of the icons on the screen.
I think that this fade out would be confusing to children being shown icons (quantity).
If the staggered fade out at the end of lessons and presets cannot be overcome, is it possible to have a blank screen automatically inserted as the final screen of every LM preset and lesson. Then the last number will be able to disappear in the same unstaggered way that all of the other numbers in the preset or lesson are replaced.
BK Team, is there another solution? I look forward to hearing if this can be overcome.
Thank you,
Mum.

Products Marketplace / Product Partners / Re: Wink and Tweedle Wink Program
|
on: October 22, 2009, 11:29:39 PM

The Wink overview book comes with the Wink kit is very helpful. It summarizes the seven steps and gives examples of how to do it. You certainly can do those games by just reading the handbook, but most parents found it is hard to do without taking the course.
Wink program is very different from the TweedleWink. For TweedleWink, parents can passively play the DVD even in the back ground because the child is in an absorbent right brain state.
Is anyone here doing (or completed) the Wink Level 1 Overview course? If so: 1. Would you eagerly recommend the Wink Level 1 online course? 2. Can you see images of the person presenting the course and people demonstrating the techniques like on a video, or is it an audio course where you just hear someone speaking to powerpoint slides? (Many of the posts mention the audio/mp3 file of the Tweedlewink online course so I am not sure what format the courses are presented in). Thank you, Mum.

Products Marketplace / Product Partners / Re: More Right Brain Kids Coupons - Available at our Forum Shop!
|
on: October 22, 2009, 10:54:10 PM

Hello Lappy, Could you please help me with questions about the Right Brain Kids Coupons. 1. Does one 15% discount coupon provide me with 15% off my total purchase (say TW DVDs 5-7) or does one discount coupon apply to just one item (3 coupons required if purchasing 3 DVDs)? 2. Does one 15% discount coupon cost 1,000 points or 500 points? 3. Are the 15% discount coupons still available? Your original post for this thread is dated 7 October 2009 but the Right Brain Kids Image in the BrillKids Forum Shop says "Limited quantity Expires: May 31, 2009". I am a bit confused. Thank you, Alison.

Wow! Thank you mother of faith and nhockaday. After reading about your experiences I will put "removable" wall stickers in the "too good to be true" category. Mother of faith, when you have a spare moment could you please explain the following in more detail as I am not able to picture it. We have now resorted to a pices of paper the size of nearly the wall using the picture removable tape to hang the paper, then I use velcro pieces on the wall. Mine loves the velcro sound. We us eit ofr our courteous wall.
Thank you, Mum.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Removable Wall Stickers & Maths
|
on: October 10, 2009, 02:25:04 AM

I just saw an advertisement in a magazine for decorative removable wall stickers and it prompted me to google removable wall stickers of dots. Until now I never knew that there is a whole world out there of very colourful dots and similarly simple “icons” for walls. At a quick look the dots would not be cheap, about $1 each. If you have used removable wall stickers could you please provide details of your experience with them by answering my questions below. How “removable” are removable wall stickers. Would they survive being taken off the wall very regularly, say two or three times a week for a year? Do wall stickers hold their shape after being prised off a wall? Did you use (or are you currently using) removable wall stickers with your math program? Would a toddler be capable of helping put the stickers on the wall? Did you (or do you currently) and your child enjoy playing math with removable wall stickers? What images did (do) you use? I can't wait to learn if anyone is using them for math already! (The pumpkins are so sweet.) Thank you, Mum.
