61  BrillKids Software / Little Musician - General Discussion / Re: LITTLE MUSICIAN - NOW LAUNCHED! on: May 19, 2012, 12:13:06 AM
Could LMs be installed into  2 computers like other learning systems?

Yes, like all our products (except iAccess which allows up to 3 devices).

YAY!  So excited!!!  yes Get ready for the stampede...

Thanks, Greg, especially for all your help with the curriculum and great suggestions (not to mention your awesome review!).

waaoow!!! great work KL....Finally the day has arrived!!! Hope Brillkids would not stop with LR,LM and little musician....eager to know the next move of brillkids...   Wink Wink but i really understand the hardwork involved, kudos to brillkids team...

Thanks!  Will update what we're doing next in a blog post soon!

Can we spend our loyalty points in getting little musician plz??

Yes, but it would only be some time after the promotional offer has ended (not sure when).

Well, I've joined the stampede and LM is now installed. Does anyone know if this version is very different from the one we were just trialling? I am wondering whether to continue where we finished yesterday or should I start at Day 1?

I know a bit about that question... smile
It's probably ok to continue from the same day where you left off in the beta.  If you had upgraded to the second beta version, then you're not going to notice any difference in content itself, but if you were still on the first beta, then biggest difference is rainbow colors and clap-along (see 'what's new' in my original post).
62  BrillKids Software / Little Musician - General Discussion / LITTLE MUSICIAN - NOW LAUNCHED! on: May 18, 2012, 11:15:59 AM
Hi everyone,

After over 4 years of development and half a year of beta testing, the day has finally come for Little Musician to be officially launched!

Once again, thank you so much for your patience with this project!  Special thanks go out to all the beta testers who gave feedback. Your feedback has been invaluable and has helped take the product to a much higher level. THANK YOU!

Read up all about Little Musician Basic here:

http://www.brillkids.com/teach-music/

Purchase it from our Online Store here:

https://user.brillkids.com/onlinestore/ls-little-musician-basic.php

(BETA TESTERS PLEASE READ INSTRUCTIONS BELOW!)

Price, Promotion, Discount

For a limited time, it will be on a Promotional Offer of $175.

Purchasing it at this promotional offer will be as if you had purchased it as part of a LR, LM and LMs bundle, so in effect, you have not lost out by not having been able to purchase it as a bundle before.

For those of you who do not have LR and LM either, you have the option of purchasing all three as a value bundle too. (There will no longer be just a LR+LM bundle.)

Those of you who participated in our Beta Survey will also receive an email very soon with a 5% discount coupon that can be applied to that price too.

Physical Box set and Shipping

You may purchase Little Musician Basic as a box set or download only.  Please note that if you choose the box set, you will be able to download Little Musician immediately, but the box set might not be ready for shipment until end of June.  Of course, there will also be shipping charges.

If you’re in Singapore, Hong Kong, UK, or Thailand, you may also choose to purchase it from your local distributor: http://www.brillkids.com/distributors.php

Beta Users - PLEASE NOTE!

If you previously installed the beta version of the software:

PLEASE COMPLETELY UNINSTALL THE BETA SOFTWARE FIRST!

(When asked during uninstalling, please choose to also delete your database and media library.)

The release build unfortunately does not support old content.  If there's something REALLY must transfer over from beta, then export the content and send it to us and we'll see what we can do.

And that’s all! Thank you, and I hope you all enjoy Little Musician as much as we did creating it!

KL

==================
What’s New In This Release Build?

Since the first beta version (Build 561):

RAINBOW COLORS
- For Sem1 and 2, virtually all notes on the staff (except in Rhythm) will show either rainbow-colored notes, rainbow-colored icons, or icons.  In the first year, we're using color-association to make the notes and pitches more easily identifiable.  We'll start dropping it come Sem 3 and 4.

RHYTHM
- We now start with quarter notes/crotchets, then eighth notes/quavers, before introducing half notes/minims and whole notes/semibreves.

CLAP-ALONG
- We now start with 'every beat' instead of 'first beat'.  We've also added a few more clap rhythms which are more challenging, like 2+3, 3+4, and even 'mixed' (which changes clap rhythms during the song).

KEYBOARD
- We also now have rainbow-colored highlights as well as key-labels.

Since the second beta version (Build 564):

START GUIDE
- The Start Guide is now ready (except for the Video Tutorials section, which is coming soon). I would encourage all of you to read it if you want to get maximum enjoyment out of Little Musician.  In addition, you may download the booklets “Teaching Your Young Child Music” and “Teaching With Little Musician”.  Before using LMs, I encourage you to download and read the latter:
http://www.brillkids.com/media/ebooks/ebook-teaching-with-little-musician.pdf

RESOURCES SECTION
- This is a brand new section that you’ll find amongst the main buttons on top. In it, you'll see a directory of embedded YouTube links that will show videos of instruments, composer pieces, popular classics, etc.  After a day's lesson ends, you will also be taken to a page here that shows videos of all the Knowledge lessons (instruments/composer and classics) shown that day.

MUSIC APPRECIATION
- For the music appreciation lesson at the end, we have added a picture of a child conductor.  This picture is to act as a prompt for you to help your child pretend to be a conductor as she listens to the music.  So grab a child-friendly stick or pen, and perhaps one day she’ll be as ‘into’ music as this boy:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/0REJ-lCGiKU&rel=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/0REJ-lCGiKU&rel=1</a>

DOWNLOADING CONTENT + LICENCE KEY
- We’ve streamlined the whole process to make it much easier for you to download and import your content and license key.

After you have installed the software, just go to your Account Management page, and click on the content link, and that’s it!

After clicking on the link, Little Musician will pop up and automatically download and import both your content as well as your license key, so you just have to sit tight and wait for it to be done.  If the downloading is taking too long and you want to play with the software first, you can ABORT the download and resume it again later by restarting the software.

MANY BUG FIXES AND MINOR ENHANCEMENTS
Apart from the above, we’ve also made countless fixes, tweaks, and enhancements, which some of you will no doubt notice as you play the lessons through.

63  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: little reader - french language pack - how good is it? on: May 17, 2012, 02:34:50 AM
We have many more content packs to be released, but that would still be just a fraction of what could be done, and doesn't even get into science yet.  No doubt we'll get to those topics eventually, but it's not going to be so soon.

Thanks for the vid - very interesting! Yet more proof to show that we can really teach our kids virtually anything if we only try to!
64  BrillKids Software / Little Musician - General Discussion / Re: LITTLE MUSICIAN beta - Near-Final version - DOWNLOAD HERE on: May 17, 2012, 02:17:10 AM
Thanks for your feedback. smile

The color scheme for some of it (that red with that green) does look a little ugly to me - I'm not sure if such shades are used for a purpose I'm not aware of.

We use a rainbow color scheme for solfege in the first year curriculum. For more on this, check out some of the other threads on this topic.  It'll also be explained more in the accompanying materials.

Quote
On a different matter I was thinking it would be awesome if you could come up with an "everything" program - reading, math, music and science (chemistry, physics, biology), mabye others (art anyone, color schemes and mixes etc).

After LR v3, LM v2 and LMs v2 have all come out, we will be working on "Little Learner", which will combine all three. smile
65  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: little reader - french language pack - how good is it? on: May 16, 2012, 11:35:18 AM
How soon is soon?

Ah, the million-dollar question... smile

I really wish we could tell you, but every time we do that, it almost always goes beyond that time frame, so we've been very hesitant in doing it anymore.

All I'll say is that it will come out after v3 of Little Reader is released, because LR v3 allows us to create curricula much more easily, and is very flexible.  We're working on finalizing LR v3 now, and you should see it released (probably in beta first) within the next few months. Hopefully French can and will follow very soon after that, and then Spanish.
66  BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Re: UK voices - can you delete one of them? on: May 16, 2012, 11:30:10 AM
Thanks very much for the valuable feedback!

Would love to know which voice in particular is troubling, so that we can assess it more carefully.  Rest assured, though, that all voice artists are definitely British (English, to be precise), and our aim was to find voices that was as neutral as possible.

For words like 'cot' sounding like 'co', it might simply be because the 't' often doesn't get recorded well if it wasn't stressed enough, rather than it being a Cockney (or whatever) accent (the accent that would say 'water' as 'wa - ah').  Will check on it though!

What do other users of the UK curriculum think? Please chime in!
67  BrillKids Software / Little Musician - General Discussion / Re: Content of Little Musician daily lessons on: May 10, 2012, 06:52:07 AM
Totally cannot say, cos it totally depends on your child's attention span and interest levels, which can change from day to day.

The only thing I can tell you is to play it by ear and do what seems appropriate at any given time.  The cardinal rule is that if it's not fun for them, then don't do the lessons.
68  BrillKids Software / Little Musician - General Discussion / Re: Get 5% off by taking Little Musician (Beta) survey on: May 10, 2012, 06:42:20 AM
Thanks to everyone so far for helping us with the survey!

Those who completed the survey properly (meaning without missing out questions except for the optional or inapplicable ones) will be emailed the coupon code at or just before launch time.

DON'T FORGET TO COMPLETE THE SURVEY BEFORE MAY 15th!
69  BrillKids Software / Little Musician - General Discussion / Re: Get 5% off by taking Little Musician (Beta) survey on: May 04, 2012, 12:45:43 AM

70  BrillKids Software / Little Musician - General Discussion / Re: Content of Little Musician daily lessons on: May 04, 2012, 12:44:41 AM
Like what we always say, no fixed rules for this - whatever you think is suitable given how your child is responding to the lessons, and this will vary from child to child.

Felicity (6.5 now) always demands at least 2 days of lessons each time, and we also do a separate chord recognition exercise for all 9 chords, as well as spend time watching more youtube videos from the Resources section (which you don't have yet in your build).

Just remember - you're the best person to judge what to do. Just trust your instincts! There's no 'getting it wrong'! smile
71  BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Re: Technical Issues on: May 03, 2012, 02:30:18 PM
Hi Chenny,

Hopefully someone will chime in with their experience, but you can do some searches yourself on whether it's safe.

We use Teamviewer, which let's us remote control your computer during the session. All that allows us to do is to control your mouse and keyboard.
It's essentially no different from having us PHYSICALLY come to your house and work on your computer to troubleshoot (except you don't see our hands moving the mouse and typing on the keyboard smile ).

After the session, you can reset the temporary password, or it will get reset anyway upon reboot of your computer.  Or if you want piece of mind, you could even uninstall it. smile

You can also see this:
http://www.teamviewer.com/en/products/security.aspx

Hope your problem gets sorted out soon.  If you prefer another remote desktop solution that you trust more, let us know.

We'll move it to the collar bone.

Anyone else with feedback? Agree/disagree?
73  The BrillKids Forum / Contests / Re: WINNERS OF THE VIDEO CONTEST: You and Your Learning Little Readers! (Part 4) on: May 03, 2012, 02:15:52 AM

Thanks so much for participating!

75  BrillKids Software / Little Musician - General Discussion / Re: LITTLE MUSICIAN beta - Near-Final version - DOWNLOAD HERE on: May 03, 2012, 02:10:19 AM
I've read an earlier reply by Kezia about downloading LMs successfully..

I am STILL (after several weeks) having problems downloading Semester 1 and 2.

We normally use Internet Explorer, but since that brought us to a naming error demaning a passpord, we tried downloading through Google Chrome instead. In Chrome, we started from Step 4, then encounted and error. So we tried again from Step 3, and encounted and error again.

Please help.

Are you still having this problem?

If so, what error are you encountering exactly? We need to know what you did and what you saw, in as much detail as possible.

One thing to try is to uninstall the software completely (choose to delete database and media library when asked) and start from the top, and making sure you're using the LATEST BUILD.

I would much rather see our clapping Brill KIDS mascots to be fully clothed, and not in diapers. (This is for LR and LMs.) Even babies have their diapers most often covered, and some are even potty trained at a very young age. When my daughter (3.5years, potty trained at 9mo) sees the diapered girl or boy in LR or LMs, she makes a sort of disgusted face, and I wonder what older kids who'll be using the programs will think when encouraged to copy the diapered baby. My daughter, thankfully, enjoys LR and LMs so much that the look doesn't stop her from participating. I just think there's less risk for participation withdrawl without the visible diaper.

(And for future LR upgrades, I would recommend the voices to say something other than "Where's your crib?"  etc., for the 'Baby Things' section, as there are older children also using LR--especially now with the Early Education for Every Children Foundation.)

Hopefully you'll find these suggestions constructive and supportive, as there is no question that we DO LOVE BrillKids products and everything you do!

All noted - thank you for taking the time to let us know your thoughts!

lzp11, ShenLi, early learning17 - re CRASH problem - we are aware of it, and it will get fixed by the final release.

Just one suggestion - could we have some graphics - even just a pic (something visual) during Music Appreciation. If theres something visual, the kids will like it even better.

This point has already been addressed. Again - wait to see the new RESOURCES section and let's talk again then. smile
In addition, use that time to try to guess the instruments with your child, or pretend to be a conductor and move (even dance) to the music.
