EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: ready-made baby books with BIG FONT?

Another option I am considering trying is similar to the photo album book. First, go to the thrift store and buy some inexpensive children's books. Then cut out the pictures and put them in one page of the photo album then type up the words from the story yourself in a large font print them and put them on the previous page.

We try to keep most of my sons toys in his room. For the toys that are down in the family room a good option is a low wooden shelve that matches the decor of your living room with maybe 2-3 shelves. Then you just have a handful of toys downstairs at a time and it is easy to keep them organized on the shelves and they are easily accessible to your child (they can even put them away by themselves), you can then rotate those toys to keep them fresh. Another option is to go to World Market (or a similar store) and buy a large woven basket with or without a lid to put them in then you can have more toys and they are out of site but they are not as organized. For the learning materials we have a large file drawer on the floor of my sons closet and it has 10 dividers for the 10 divisions of knowledge in Domans books and within each division manilla folders for each group. It also has a 11th divider for words. The reason the drawer is on the floor of his closet if the materials are so large that if the drawer was in the cabinet where it belongs it wouldn't shut so this keeps them organized and accessible.

I work between 60 and 80 hours a week ina very erratic schedule and honestly I would love to be able to stay at home with my son. However, because I have a higher earning potential than my husband he is very adverse to the idea.
I think the benefits of working out of the house include that when you get home you are fresh for your children. You may be tired from work but having been away from them all day you are excited to see them and make every moment count. So the time is low in quantity and high in quality. Whereas some people who are at home all day are so tied up in the cooking, cleaning, shopping etc that their child is with them all day, yes, but the time is not as high quality.
On the other hand, there are those people who get home from work and just sit on the couch ignoring their children. As well as those people, likely most of the people on this forum, who stay at home and try to fill the day with high quality child enriching experiences.
If you are someone who would fall into the last group and are able to stay at home then I think you are probably the best teacher for your child and would be doing them a service by being with them all day.

I agree, mainly I do the research and tell my husband what I've learned and he supports what I want to do. He's definitely seen the results. He will show cards but he doesn't actually research any of them himself. He also is not a big reader outside of journals/books for work and hobbies. So although I would love to see him creating presentations, researching POIs and taking over a significant portion of reading aloud/card/presentation showing for now I am happy to know that he is supportive of my goals for our son.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / Physical Program- Schedules?

Lately I feel like our physical program has not been what it should be. When Blase was a baby we followed it religiously but now as a result of living in an area where there is not easy access to outdoor areas for walking etc and lack of time it has really fallen off. I need some inspiration so I was hoping that those of you who do a physical program could share with me what you do and how you schedule it into your day. Thanks.

I made the majority of my flashcards. For the words I followed domans recommendations and just printed words on them. However, instead of the word again on the other side I put the French transpation so we can do it both ways. For the encyclopedic knowledge cards I put pictures on one side and then the infomation on the other side. For the topics I used "how to give your baby encyclopedic knowledge" by doman and found the pictures/info on the internet. I then use a menu size sheet of laminating plastic and laminate one 11x11 encyclopedic knowledge card with 1 or 2 word cards.

We have a very unique schedule because my husband and I both work late. My son gooes to bed at 11pm and then wakes between 9 and 10 am (when the nanny is there) then he takes a 3 hour nap during the day so he is able to spend time with us when we get home. It seems late to have a child up, but he is used to it this way and his schedule is just shifted so it allows us the maximum family time possible.

When I was in college in my psychology class I saw a video about IAHP and saw these tiny kids doing the most amazing things. I myself learned to read right when I turned 3 so I knew it was possible to teach young children these things. When I was pregnant with my son I tried to find the information that I recalled from college "all I could remember was something about "better babies" and "institute" and from there I got all of the "how to teach..." books and haven't looked back since. People hear my son talk or point out words and noone believes he's only 2.

One thing we do with Blaise is take a warm shower and hold him in it. It is soothing for him and the steam loosens up anything in his chest and by the end of the shower any congestion in his nose/sinuses will have run out. Then we just clean him up and he usually feels so much better.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Encyclopedic Knowledge / Re: What is Your Child's Favorite Set of Bits??

on: November 26, 2008, 06:41:08 PM

My sons favorite set of bits is his da Vinci set. It was made by me and has the POIs on the back. He loves to talk about St John the Baptist pointing up and Mona Lisa, Geneva de Benci and the rest. We actually ran out of bits for a bit so I brought it back out again and did the 1st magnitude of programs on the back So he probably saw them for like 2 weeks, but we take them out now and again to look at and talk about for fun.

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Ranking the Doman Programs

In my mind I believe that the physical program is important and during April-Sept we doin the swimming program almost everyday and gymnastics once a week year round but becasue of where we live (a neighborhood where it is not safe to walk on the streets or go to a local track/park) the rest of the physical program is quite difficult for us so it seems to fall by the wayside. So our Ideal and Actual are different. Maybe someday we will be able to move and it will change.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Doman, YBCR, dot cards, LR, flashcards... help!

The Doman method is a way of teaching your child to read using rapidly shown cards in a large red font that gradually becomes smaller and black in color. In addition you gradually move up from words to couplets, phrases, sentences and then books. You can learn more at their website : http://iahp.org/ and their store http://www.gentlerevolution.com. They sell books which teach you how to teach reading, math, encyclopedic knowledge, physical excellence and swimming. They also have videos on you tube at http://www.youtube.com/user/iahpvideos.
