EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Which DVD other than LR?A
|

I apologize as my subject title is not very clear but that is the state of my mind right now! There are tons of educational DVDs available in the market, some of them are outright not-educational ( IMO--baby einstein) . These kind of DVDS seem to breeding by themselves as every time I search the net I find atleast 2 new ones. My question is : If you could purchase only one educational DVD set other than LR software , which would you buy and why.
The reason is I would like to get some for my child but want to limit on the purchases. Thanks

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: Should 15 months old be talking???

Just my 2 cents... If the child is able to communicate with you and the primary caregiver and is able to point things when you name them , follow games like say pat-a cake , there is good comprehension and expression of language. granted , when a child is exposed to more languages, talking can be slightly delayed . But i would not stop exposing my child to diferent language because of that. Believe me i used to worry a lot about my child who was not speaking at that age while all her peers from the play group were way ahead verbally. But she has really caught up now . My best friends child is 2+ and is still not talking but she is not concerned as he can communicate well . for her family it is genetic but believe me all of her family is highly intellectual.Dont worry before you know, your child will start speaking and then it will be non-stop!!!

I choose Marathi ( as a second langauge) as this is my first language and I would love it if my child was able to read and understand the nuances of this language and enjoy fine literature in Marathi the way I do. I have started with flashcards and some LR presentations and hopefully will add on more languages to it. I admit I love the feel of FArsi and would love to learn it myself.

Book: How to raise an amazing child the montessori way Depending on where you live if you have an Ikea close by, you can purchase a LATT table and chair set. I use that one for my childs meals and basic activity . For other things I have a Kritter table but I find Latt is better for her height. If you want to do absolutely the correct things by the book, you may have to purchase glass items. For this time I am sticking to plastic pitchers etc mostly, but her plates and bowls are glass. Instead of having low wooden shelves which i would absolutely love, I just got some sterilite shelves and inexpensive particle board book cases (these are perfect height) I have corralled her activity things (like beads, dry beans, clothespins etc) in separate baskets and then put it in the shelves for easy reach. I store items like washcloth bibs within easy reach so she can get them herself (while making a huge mess) In the kitchen : I keep a separate drawer for her things (lowest one of course) I do not have space for a nice sturdy wooden step stool , so I just bring out one of her small wooden chairs (GUlliver from IKea) and have her stand on that while helping me. Also the LAtt table is easy to move from dining room to kitchen for her to help me with a few things like washing vegetables etc. I have small dustpan/broom for her , inexpensive plastic again) For practicing cutting, I simply have her sit in her high chair at times. It works fine ! I do not practice all the principles of montessori , infact less than 15 % I should say . But i would love to do it. This is just a step . I reasoned that even if I used inexpensive items which are non- breakable, if she learns the skills , thats great for me. I did not want to get caught up in the equipment so much that I would lose focus (and money ) But that is what i think , I hope that helps you.

thank you mas2in for your help with hindi language font. Unfortunately my system is old and does not have those tabs and I fiddled with the other tabs but was not able to switch to marathi. But i found a site: gamabhana Lite which helps in translation and was able to copy /paste those words in LR. karma points to mas2in . Hopefully adding a new language will be available in the new versions

Just what I was thinking this AM, professionally done LR files.. more uploads by brillkids ... that would be great. What about changing point systems for uploading files..that is upload a file =x points, upload a file with pronunciatins and pictures =x+y points, upload a file with Pic+pro+say Bit of intelligence recording (i do not know if that is posible)=x+y+z points. and how about making a little checkbox to indicate if the uploader is a native speaker or not. that would make our screening process for quality files alittle easier. Now that is a tall order

For the sounds try using the following steps:
IN ppt go to insert -->then go to Movies and sounds and then follow it to record sound. once you have recorded the sound , go to slide transition, and then in the MODIFY transition , you can insert the sound at the correct slide.
I had slight trouble with this, I was not able to insert sound easily and had to click on custom animation and then switch to slide transition and then i could select the sound. I am sure why this happened. But i was finally able to insert sounds. Hope that helps

karma, karma, karma to you Ayesha, this REALLY helped me, i am a visual person but at the same time I have computer-o-phobia . Your excel sheet was sooo easy to understand and to implement. I have completed about half of my words with Doman flashcards and am not goign to use LR. But I always keep my sheet handy . Now I am inspired by you and wii use excel and make things easier on me. (i need to have my paper copy, even if I am using LR palylists)

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / Re: Teaching YOGA!
|

I used to be a certified Yoga teacher ages ago, but I was trained only for adults. But i can see the application of yoga in children very easily as it helps not just to maintain /improve flexibility and breathing but has a more holistic approach of improving concentration and the ability to relax . I think both these aspects are so important in todays life. According to me once children are able to follow 3-4 step commands consistently, yogic practices can be initiated. We know that children love to imitate and if parents participate in yoga consistently, kids will want to do it too! Just thinking about it, just like with reading, I think kids will want to perform the more wierd postures (at least for the giggles). Just make sure that you have a good yoga instructor .
