77  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Which DVD other than LR?A on: May 12, 2009, 06:47:39 PM
Good question, saniso. I know how you feel I am constantly checking out all the baby dvds out there. I think most of them fall flat.
I hope not to offend anyone, but I think Baby Einstein is basically bunk.
we checked some out from the library when my daughter was almost a year. It didn't really seem eductional and didn't hold my daughters interest at all. I liked the one called Baby Shakespear. It had some nice poems in it. Emma thought that one was alright too( there was a train in it). Other than that can't say much for them. I think they are a waste of time and money.
We sign with our daughter and around the same time we checked out some Signing Time. The instant Emma heard the baby laughter at the beginning she was intrigued. She loved it . She immediately started signing "Signing Time".
and would ask for it all the time. We limited to once in the morning and once at night on occasion.
Tornado has got it right, if you ask me. Emma is now 19 mos. and speaks and signs in conjunction. She can retell whole stories, usually annecdotes about Mommy making some kind of silly mistake, or Grandpa bonking his head, something she finds utterly hillarious.
I highly reccomend it. Try anything in the first season(m we like it best) or Baby Signing time to start.
Also, I think if I could afford it I would get Tweedlewink. I previewed one on Youtube. Emma loved it and I thought it was awesome. Maybe I'll hot the lotto. rolleyes
Good luck. Be strong. Don't believe the hype.

If vaccinations really work, Why are parents who vaccinate concerned with wether or not others choose to vaccinate?

Wow.
Thanks for posting.
What an Interesting article. Seriously, there IS way to much homework being doled out. When I work an 8 hour shift , I come home and relax. My work day is over. Why should a child have to spend 8 hours, mainly sedantary, and then come home to sit and work some more. It's unnatural, not to mention unhealthy. Schoolwork should only be given in an amount that can be done at school with help and under supervison.
Why send a child home to practice a math problem 25 times potentially in the wrong way.
Great. What if the child repeats it incorrectly. Now it's cemented in his head the wrong way.

My hubby really wanted a boy first to watch out for any litle sisters he might have. I sensed such a strong presence inutero, we were sure it would be a boy.
We got a rough and tumble girl instead. She may be protecting a little brother some day.
Couldn't imagine it any other way now. My hubby feels the same way. happy

smile By the way I'm a first time parent too, so I know it can be overwhelming. The important thing is that you enjoy your time with your baby. Relationship before results.
I used to stress and stress. Now I just try to do the best in this day.

Hey Roslyn,
It's great that you joined when your baby is so young. I found this site just a bit ago, and it has helped me soooo much.
My daughter is 19 mos. and i knew I needed help. I sensed her wanted to learn EVERYTHING, but didn't really know what to teach.
Check out the free downloads. At # mos. the infant stimulation cards will be great.
Great job starting so early. The world is your Oyster. Have fun! Be joyous in teaching your child always and the sky's the limit.

 I especially liked this one:

It's really nifty that they have great classical music right there as an option to play during lessons.

Way cool website. Thanks for posting this. It's just what I was looking for.
89  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: STOP MOVING...baby won't stop moving when changing diaper on: May 08, 2009, 02:21:51 PM
I had the same issue with my little girl, Espescially  after she could walk. She never wanted to be still. She always had a plan and diapering disrupted it. She wanted the wet diaper off, and then she'd make her break for with naked buns.  laugh
I was distraught. If I tried to make her stay she'd cry as if her heart was breaking.
Then I heard of a montessori toddler care program where they diaper standing as soon as the child is able to stand. They also anounce everything they are about to do before they do it. All of this is to show respect and so the child won't feel so imposed upon.
I tried this and it worked.
Diapering standing up wasn't the easiest, but it's better than an unhappy wailing child.
I hope this helps.

Hey Jackson3,
I live in Iowa too. Moved here from Cali a couple years ago.
Glad to know there are some other Iowans out there. Sometimes I feel so alone.
Know what I mean? People around my little home town think I'm a little weird I think. Are you in a small town too?
