IQ tests are very inaccurate for people who have developmental delays & especially those with communication delays. Learning through song can help people memorize but they don't retain the information in the same way as things learned through other methods. Often things learned through song can only be remembered by repeating the song whereas something learned by flashcards for example, can be remembered instantly. That's great that you are getting started on the Doman books. I recommend How to Multiply Your Baby's Intelligence as well as the pathway to wellness. I read What to do About Your Brain Injured Child first & it drove me nuts! It is a history of the Doman method & never does get around to telling you "what to do". It is good to know the history but was very frustrating to have to wait for the other books to come to tell me "what to do". I'm sure I would have enjoyed it more if I had known it was just a history. I would recommend getting a neurodevelopmental evaluation if at all possible. If you can do a program to help organize her brain first, it will allow her to learn the information more easily. Here is a link to the most complete list of neurodevelopmentalists that I know of: http://dsdaytoday.blogspot.com/2011/06/get-your-own-neurodevelopmentalist.htmlOtherwise, the Doman books will be very helpful at creating your own program & I'm sure the parents here will be able to help you also.

If feel guilty cutting up books too. I bought a great set for EK at a rummage sale recently & ended up just showing them & doing the POI while they were still in the book.
Besides book sales & rummage sales, we get some great used books & other early learning materials at the local thrift store.

I am still using Little Reader with my dd who just turned 5. Although her reading vocabulary was tested at age 4.5 at a grade 3.9 level, she usually reads at a mid 2nd grade level for fun. I usually use more unique files like geography, art, French language or files that I make on my own because she knows too many words to do more simple files. It is a Little more work, especially making my own files, but K really enjoys it & is learning so much from a wide variety of subjects.

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Online iq Test?
|

I hope I am posting this in the right place.
My 4 year old dd has Down syndrome & although her future school doesn't fully realize, she is very advanced in reading, math, geography & a few other areas as compared to typical kids her age. On the other hand, she is somewhat behind typical kids in gross motor & speech.
I am told that because she had a diagnosis, she will be required to have a iq test done within the next couple of years.
My concern is that if, due to her language delay or even just if she happens to cooperate, the results may not be accurate. A low score sometimes let's a school get away with not teaching a child as much as they are capable of.
A very high score could also be detrimental because she may lose any services like speech. I would rather this happens though because she has never gotten much speech anyways & we do our own neurodevelopmental program which covers the same areas as therapy would. The ND program is more effective anyways but I hate to close any doors just in case.
My husband & I have decided that we will refuse an iq test but we would like to be prepared in case we are forced to do it. In that case we would likely see if it is possible to get a private test done So we can have some control.
In the meantime, I would like to find a free online test that can give me a very rough idea of my dd's iq. I have been googling but haven't come up with anything too helpful yet. I am wondering if anyone knows if there is anything out there for an iq test that I can use to get a very rough idea.
As a footnote, I want to add that although I am seeking this information, I do realize that there are many other types of intelligence that are very important as well & the necessity of raising a well rounded child. I just like to be aware of the possibilities.
Thanks in advance:)

adopted 4GOD - my dd also has vision issues which we have been working on through her neurodevelopmental (ND) program. At her last opthamology appointment last week her eyes had improved slightly in both nearsightedness & astigmatism. It was only a small change but the optho said that they usually don't improve & usually just continue to get worse, especially the astigmatism so I am hopeful that they will continue to improve.
Alice_147 - I have done a home ND program from the time my dd was a baby for several years, then a program with an ND for the last couple. If you have any specific questions I'd be happy to answer or check our my blog - link is in my siggy.

adopted4GOD - congrats on your adoptions! Hope the next two that you are working on go smoothly.
We are using a neurodevelopmental (ND) program with our daughter. We made our own home program until she was 3 & for about 2 years now we have used an ND with ICAN.
You are welcome to check out my blog which is in my siggy to read more about her & the various therapies & supplements that we have used.
