76  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: How many words can your children read? on: June 05, 2011, 03:30:44 PM
I started at the end of December of 2010. So December 31st was when I purchased your Baby Can Read. Mind you my daughter is 4yrs old too. But she went through the entire program in a little under 2 months. Then we moved on to Monkisee , now we are almost done with the 1st half of Brillkids and, yes she can read all those words. I'll have to take some pictures or do some video. She is reading at least an early 1st grade level.  I am also almost done with the 1st set of 1st grade sight words with her too that I had left from the K12 program I used with my 3rd daughter over a year ago. I kept them and I'm glad I did.

The thing is you really can't compare children. They are all different and when they are ready they are ready. I think in our case my daughter was just ready to learn to read and I caught her at the right moment in time.  Plus some children learn best visually. There are different types of learners. Some learn best visually, (using the eyes) , auditory( using the ears), kinesthetic( using the body) and some children need a combination of all of the above. The trick is to find out the best way your child learns the best.  I just think my youngest is a visual learner.  Plus from what I've noticed it takes longer for the younger ones to learn and remember those words , versus a 3 or 4 yr old. I find that right around that age the kids really seem to kick it in high gear and can remember more words faster. I'm not sure if its just me or what. But from watching videos, reading about early reading and from my own experience ( my 2nd daughter read at the age of 4.5 and is my better reader and my youngest at the age of 4 are both by far my better readers.) But that maybe a matter of my own opinion.  I guess if you start younger you have a better chance of your child reading more words by the age of 3 or 4 too if they pick up on it as well.

How are you flashing the cards? One of the members on here has a blog (http://downsyndromeupupupandaway.blogspot.com/2011/05/fast-flashing-method.html)   and she showed the best way to flash the cards. Even I found I was flashing them a little bit to slowly. Now that I've changed it my daughter is picking up words even a bit more quicker than she had been.
I also make sure when I can I run my finger across words I read when reading stories, and across the words in our missal at church when we are singing etc.
77  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: How to know when your child is ready for Rightstart or Jones Geniuses...? on: June 04, 2011, 10:23:47 PM
The time I found was best to start a formal math program was when they recognized their numbers.
If she can write her numbers then I would go ahead and start with a math program. But work through it slowly. For a young child I like programs like Touch Math, Jones Genius, or Saxon K .  They are really effective and really get you started on your way with math.
78  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: How do you do puzzles with your child on: June 04, 2011, 10:19:16 PM
Boy, for me at that age I got the big chunky wooden puzzles.  We'd sit and do them together first. Then I would let her try on her own and if they asked for help. I just did. Didn't make a big deal out of it. As they grew older they just did them more and more on their own. Now my 4yr old is tackling on 100 piece puzzles on her own , well with a little help from me at times.
Its just a stage. Just enjoy the moment because before too long he won't want any of your help for anything. LOL

Puzzle time at that age for us was some mommy and child time. The older they got the more they did on their own.
79  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: How many words can your children read? on: June 04, 2011, 10:14:52 PM
I would have to say my daughter can read almost 1,000 words at the moment. Or maybe more. Sometimes she'll just read a word I never taught her to read. It doesn't include using the Little Reader, Monkisee, and  Your Baby Can Read.

I found that delivering the 'old' words in a different way can help keep them fresh. Meaning either by having her watch her videos, or doing flashcard games or finding or making books with the words she's already learned.  I take some index cards, those little rings and make little stories for my daughter to read on those and she likes them because she thinks they are her little books and she can read them without me being over her shoulder because they have words in them she can already read all on her own.
Its been a little easier because my daughter is 4 and seems to be soaking up everything around her at the moment. She loves reading and she loves math right now so we're constantly working on those at the moment. I am going to throw some more handwriting at her because she'll be a kindergardener this year.
I'll admit some words she has forgotten so we go over them. I just add them back into our pile of cards and we go over them if she has forgotten them. Seems to work like a charm.

81  Parents' Lounge / Coffee Corner - General Chat / Re: gender experiment by parents here is the article what do you think? on: May 30, 2011, 04:53:55 PM
I have to agree. Keeping secrets is wrong. Of course it works now because they are all young but as they age it will become an issue. What if they go to school?  They will have contact to the outside world. There are many forms and such that ask if you are male or female. People aren't going to care if he says to them: I don't know my mom won't tell me , or its none of your business.
Its just the way the world is.
You can easily tell people you have a son but let him dress up or put on nail polish. I see it everyday. Doesn't affect the child if he knows he's a boy.
I think the experiment is wrong on all levels because then your keeping secrets from your family in general.  I think too its an experiment that will eventually go bad.  You just can't avoid who God made you to be. Girls and boys have different brains and science has proven that time and time again. You can't escape that no matter what you do.

My daughter loves the Aesop fables books too. There are also a few ebooks too that I've downloaded for her and she likes those too.
Thanks for such a great product!

85  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: 'Home Curriculum' for children going to preschool on: May 21, 2011, 07:36:21 PM
Our 'homeschool' curriculum I do with my 4yr old is :
Touch Math, Brillkids, and Christian Light Curriculum ( love it). I do it when she asks or if I have a spare moment. She's already in preschool so I don't like to press my luck. Whatever we get in, we get in.
86  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: 'Home Curriculum' for children going to preschool on: May 21, 2011, 05:59:02 PM
That's the strangest thing I've ever heard wacko . That if you teach him more at home he'll be bored with school. Not true at all and even more so with Montessori. Since Montessori is about discovering to being with.
A child in a Montessori setting will always be learning something they didn't know and they do have the flexibility to challenge him too. So that's just crazy to even hear.  Children are always learning and they never want to stop. So if he happens to get bored then its your responsibility as his parent to go to his school and make the proper arrangements to make sure they are working at challenging him.  You don't dumb down your kid in fear of him being board.  Sad

88  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Music / Re: Why I Avoid Classical Piano Training for My Daughter (+ Little Musician Update) on: May 17, 2011, 03:26:52 PM
Looking forward to seeing Little Musician.
This must be why my 7yr old came out not liking to learn piano. She really wanted to learn and I sent her for lessons only for her to tell me she doesn't like it.
Maybe something like this would be helpful. I'd really like for her to learn to play.
Not sure if it was the teacher or just the music was confusing or a bit of both.
89  Products Marketplace / Product Discussions and Reviews / Touch Math Upper Grade math on: May 16, 2011, 04:43:24 PM
I know many here have young children but thought I'd share my review on the Touch Math Upper Grade level math.
I had to create a temporary blog as my Blogspot isn't working at the current moment ( can't post). So please take a moment and jump on over and read my review and leave a comment ( so I know if anyone is reading it).

90  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / Re: Is failure an option? on: May 15, 2011, 01:45:11 AM
Its never to early to teach about failure. We all go through failure as soon as we're born. From starting to crawl, to repeatingly trying to take those first steps. Its our jobs as parents to be there for our children when they do fail and to let them know that they can do something.
To me failure is never an option. But then again I'm a parent to a child with special needs so that feeling is deepened more into our family structure probably more so than a family with healthy children.

I've yet to really seen in life where failure is an option. We need to strive to let our children know that they can do great things and if they work hard enough they can achieve it. If we teach them to fail then it does become an option , then they begin to fail themselves.
I know with my youngest we've been through some pretty tough times when it came to her health. There were many times where I just wanted to give up and throw in the towel. But I couldn't, and I still can't.

Our children will fail , we're not perfect , only God is. But we can teach them when it does happen they need to get up and keep moving on. We need to teach them that in the tough times we need to turn to our faith and keep moving on and never let failure be an option in life.

As for pushing children, well there is a difference. If your pushing them and they aren't enjoying it then that is a problem on the parents part. Not the child's. But if the child likes to be challenged , enjoys it , and the parent knows when to stop before they know they want to stop. Then 'pushing' in that matter is a good thing.
