76  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: 5 year old struggling on: February 12, 2009, 08:44:05 PM
Thanks guys for the suggestions. I should be getting the book next week and I will give a review of the program as we go.

I like your ideas tanikit I will try this and see how she responds to this method of stringing sounds together. It makes sense to me smile

I also printed out the list from rainmatrix (thanks) and will make some flash cards from those.

Puzzlemelody, we do have the Tag Reader System that she uses to help her read but doesn't stay interested in that for to long. And with four kids in the house we rarely have enough quite time to play background music that anyone could actually hear! LOL

I think I might also try making flash cards out of the words from one of the books I know she likes me to read to her and once she is comfortable with the words let her have a go at reading the book on her own. Anything to boost her confidence will help her launch forward I think.

Thanks again!
77  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / 5 year old struggling on: February 11, 2009, 04:34:55 PM
I was wondering if any one has had experience using the reading reflex program?

http://www.readamerica.net/

They actually call their method Phono-Graphix. My 5-year-old is struggling with reading. She knows the letters and their sounds. She can also sound out some CVC words but nothing really beyond that. She is frustrated because several children in her Kindergarten class are fluent readers already.

I read her books everyday, she plays on Starfall, I help her sound words out. I have also tried showing her LR at times but she feels this is for babies, since I mostly show this to her baby brother. I am having a difficult time knowing what to do to help her. I guess I got comfortable thinking that she would learn reading in Kinder with no problem because that is what her brothers did. They were both fluent readers by this level of Kinder. I know every child is different though. I didn't know about teaching children at a younger age so I didn't really worry about it with her. I figured all would fall into place in Kinder. But now that it's not really happening for her, I know I need to work with her more.

Any suggestions?? I ordered the Reading Reflex book, so I'm hoping this will help us.

How can you use the picture editor in LM? I see the tab but it is shaded gray like it's unavailable to use.

Hi,

I would check out http://www.signingtime.com/ They are a great resource! My 1 yr old loves the videos, which I believe you can still get a discount through Little Reader.

Anyway, their site is very useful. It has a few games and printable activities all about signing. They also have a forum that you can get on and ask specific questions.

Good Luck!
81  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: eliminating dairy products on: January 16, 2009, 02:08:28 AM
We haven't done the blood tests yet. 12 tubes blink ouch! If eliminating dairy for a month doesn't do us any good then I will press for some sort of testing. Although I've read that testing at my son's age isn't very reliable??
82  Parents' Lounge / Coffee Corner - General Chat / Re: did she want show me that she knows it??????????or is that her interst on: January 15, 2009, 07:23:51 PM
It sounds like she is excited to show you what she knows. I would still keep your lessons short enough that she is having fun the whole time. But it sounds like you are already doing a great job!
83  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: How to increase baby appetite on: January 15, 2009, 06:02:25 PM
It could also be teething. It may just be sore to suck on the bottle so he doesn't eat as much. Hopefully it's just a phase and he will back in no time!

There's always something to worry about, isn't there? Wink
84  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: He finally showed me a sign of reading!!! on: January 15, 2009, 06:00:11 PM
I wouldn't say he talks yet. He'll say mama and da but doesn't really say much else. I think he's trying though, like he's starting to say sounds and pointing at stuff.
85  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / He finally showed me a sign of reading!!! on: January 15, 2009, 05:22:30 PM
We have been doing a loose version of the Doman reading program, although we have been very lax lately. He views the YBCR videos almost daily, he's on video 3 now. And of course we do LR almost daily also.

Lately we have been doing LR instead of flash cards. I do random categories, the ones he likes the best and I also show him the YBCR sets that I made.

He knows some baby signs for diaper, dog, and bird and will grab his ear (most of the time) when asked. I started noticing that he would grab his ear as soon as the word came up also doing the sign for diaper, dog and bird when he saw those words. It seemed to me that he would respond even before the word was pronounced so I did a little experiment.

I turned the pronunciation off on the YBCR set that I have been showing him. We casually scrolled through the words and he watched but ss soon as "ear" popped up he grabbed his ear! He didn't do anything for any of the other words though. I was so excited, to say the least.

It's funny though how they really do not like to be tested because when I tried to do it again he refused and wanted to be done. So stubborn!! LOL

This is so motivating! I guess we will get back to our more regular program. YEAH!!!
86  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: eliminating dairy products on: January 15, 2009, 05:07:38 PM
I am currently eliminating all dairy from my son's diet. And I mean all dairy. I am being very careful not to give him any prepared food that have any type of dairy product in it. I made pasta last night and had to search through my sauces to find one that did not have any cheese products in it.

I am mainly doing this because I think his system is intolerant of dairy and it is affecting him. He developed a rash on his face and his poor bowels just can't normalize. He also started getting some exzema on his legs, but that could just be due to the dry weather?

The doc said it takes a full month to get all dairy out of his system so I'll let you all know how he does dairy free at that time. It's only been a couple of days since we went completly dairy free.

I tried the raw milk and was really hoping that would work for him because of all the benifits that I read about, but I don't think it will work for him at least.

Right now he is drinking a mix of rice and/or almond milk.

Right now I don't inforce "dairy free" on my other kiddos but it is limited because I am not cooking with it. I am hoping the limited dairy will benifit them also.

88  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: know more bout babies share more bout them on: January 12, 2009, 05:12:52 AM
Scientists in Norway videoed babies who were delivered onto their mothers' tummies, and found to their astonishment that if left to their own devices, the babies used their limbs in a slow but coordinated way to crawl up and reach the breast where they then latched on and fed unaided.
89  Parents' Lounge / For Guests - No Membership Required / Re: I'm excited on: January 11, 2009, 03:56:21 PM
Hi, I too was so excited to find this site. I love being able to read about others who are teaching their babies.

As Linzy says Doman recommends you start with 5, however don't get caught up in an exact number like I did in the begining. I was so stressed to get in the recommended number that we weren't having fun. I found that sometimes my boy can only sit through a few cards at a time. Try to always stop before your baby wants to stop that way he/she will want it more the next time.

The key to success is to make sure you and you baby are always having fun!

Welcome!
90  Parents' Lounge / Coffee Corner - General Chat / Re: He's Walking! on: January 11, 2009, 03:31:28 PM
Thanks for all of the encouraging words. It's so funny because he was walking all over the place that day and now he refuses. Stinker! When ever we try he just plops on his butt and crawls.
