EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Baby Inferring Incorrectly
|

Hello everyone,
I hope someone can help me with this...my 12 month old reads several words by sight (eg, ball, art, cat, dog, car, tiger, nose, etc). I have been doing YBCR with him since he was 3 months, some LR since he was 6 months, and just started the original Doman flash cards system (based on the book) with him a week ago. I'm super impressed with all that he knows (I'm sure he knows many more words than I'm even aware of), but have encountered a bit of a challenge: he sometimes "guesses" at words when he sees the first letter of a word/a sequence of letters from a word he already knows. For example, I was on Google and he saw the letter g and said "girl" because that's a word he knows. I said, "This says Google. The word google starts with the letter g like girl." But he kept saying "girl". Another example, he saw the word "all" on the laundry detergent and said "ball". I'm sorry if this is a silly question, but should I be concerned about this? I was thinking maybe I should start teaching him phonics, though I know Doman advises against that at this stage. Has anyone else encountered this issue? If so, did the issue resolve itself once you started teaching phonics? I'd love to hear some other experiences.
Thank you, Tara

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Help! Suggestions for crying baby...

Hello everyone, my 9.5 month old has just become very interested in the YBCR flash cards. Though he's been watching the videos almost every day since 3 months he was never really into the flash cards and books that accompanied the program. But, now he loves the flashcards...problem is (or maybe not a problem?) that after I go through all the cards with him he cries because he wants me to do them again. Sometimes I do them 3 or 4 times in a row and he still can't get enough! I'd be happy to go through them over and over again but I just don't know if that's correct (is there a wrong way to do it?). Does anyone have experience with this? How did you handle it?
Thanks for any advice you may have!

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Newbie confused on how to use YBCR, Doman & Little Reader???

Hello everyone,
I'm new to this forum and have been poking around for the last couple of weeks. I have a question for those of you who have used multiple teaching methods to teach your babies to read...how did you do it??? I have a 3 month old and I've just started him on YBCR. I'm also doing some stuff from Doman's How Smart is Your Baby (no Doman reading stuff yet though...I haven't read that book). We read books to him and have been since he was born. Now I'm very interested in getting Little Reader, which from what I can gather incorporates Doman's method but using multimedia? I guess I'm just curious about how others have combined the multiple teaching methods? Specifically, at what ages did you use each tool? Thanks for any guidance you can provide.
Many thx, Tara

Congratulations Kaysha!! This post came right on time for me...I have an infant and I'm trying to figure out where to begin after recently learning about all the wonderful resources out there (YBCR, Doman, Little Reader, etc). It's great to hear a success story from someone who has used various methods geared towards instilling a love of reading in their child. Thanks for sharing and congrats again!! I wish you and your boy much success as you continue to grow together.

Hello! My name is Tara and I'm a mommy to a 2.5 month old baby boy! I'm interested in learning teaching methods for babies as I'm staying at home with my little guy for at least the first year of his life (and may decide to home school depending on how things go this year). I'm learning to navigate the site though I am finding it a bit daunting. Any tips on where to begin would be most appreciated. Thanks and I'm glad to be joining you all in cyberspace!
