1  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Methods to enhance MEMORY on: January 13, 2009, 03:36:28 AM
Hi all,

My son goes to shichida method and yes they preach memory linking. There is no memory pegging method though.

In memory linking they show a set of 10 cards (for 3 year olds) initially followed by a story which links each of the 10 picture cards together. The story doesn't need to make much sense!! After repeating the process for 3 times, the cards are flipped over and the child is asked randomly to pick out a certain card (non sequential). They say after training this way for a few months a 3 year old's brain can memorise a max of 50 picture cards.

But my darling boy is very selective in memorising things. He can remember things he likes. Like Ice-cream, cakes, bicycles etc.  LOL . I guess that's why teaching has to be made enjoyable for kids for them to absorb what is input to them.

Hi Lappy,

Number 2 is mine. You may use it anytime, anywhere on the Brillkids website.  big grin  There is no need to ask me, really. It's the least I can do for the wonderful experience Little Reader has offered my children.

Hi all,

sorry for the late post. I didn't know this thread existed until now!!  LOL

I'm from S'pore and my son is attending shichida classes for a 2 months now. The classes are actually based on having fun and learning. The teachers don't force the kids to sit in one place to learn, they can be moving about. The quickness of the activities (1 activity 3 mins or less) first bewildered me but that's how fast the kids get bored of doing an activity.

The kids are fully engaged for that 1hr and after every shichida class my son falls asleep on the way home. He enjoys the activities and i guess gives all his energy and thus he tires easily.

4  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: "Singapore Math" Method? on: September 01, 2008, 04:59:21 AM
Ya... our kids are starting to learn everything earlier Zlyne!!  LOL

Just on this topic, I think the Little Math may offer some good ways for us to teach math concepts to our kids. In fact we could try to use abacus for early math teaching.

I'm planning on getting one in wood but i don't know where to look for one. Do u have any Idea Zlyne?

5  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: My Son Started Reading Fluently Before He Got 3! on: August 31, 2008, 06:12:14 AM
That's really amazing Ces! My daughter is 3.5 yr old but she's just learning words now. She enjoys story telling and she imitates me quite well.  LOL
6  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: "Singapore Math" Method? on: August 31, 2008, 06:07:44 AM
Heloo...Me from S'pore too.

And as zlyne correctly pointed out, I went ,"Singapore Math?!! What's that?" blink

But in general I agree that Asian standard of Math teaching has been very good. Take Abacus training, speed mathematics etc. My parents used to memorise the multiplication tables from x1 to x16 and even know, if u wake them from their sleep and ask them what is 16x16, they'll say it correctly!!

I read the URL from Wiki. The bar system of teaching algebra as a pre-algebra module is difficult but a good beginning for kids who are more visual. I couldn't quite grasp it when i was studying it (because i was used to trial and error mthds) but it worked well for some kids.

7  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: whats the difference between the Shichida method and Glenn Domanns? on: August 31, 2008, 05:52:50 AM
All books and pictures seem to generate a type of wave energy, which if you train for it can be felt through our fingers. So when a child touches something red, she may feel a warm energy and when she touches something blue, she may feel cool energy. This is the basis of ESP training. So for very young children, you can say place a picture of a red car in an envelope and ask her to feel it and guess what it could be. She may not say 'car' in the first try but u can help her by asking," Do you feel anything when you touch it? warm or cool? what color is the object?etc".

Slowly, you'd develop their ESP. Here's another exercise which leaves my kids in giggles. Take a blank card and another which has a picture of ice cream on it. Face them down and ask child to guess where the ice cream is. Since its their favourite food, they'll guess it correctly at least 3 out of 5 times.  LOL

One key difference is that Shichida also includes exercises which aims to develop a child's intuition and extra-sensory perception (ESP).  Many people don't even believe in such phenomenon, and perhaps that's also one reason why things are kept secret, to avoid people ridiculing such notions.

Actually even after 1 semester at shichida, ESP training perplexes me. there's an even more amazing training called wave reading. Where you absorb the waves generated by the book by fanning the pages on head!! The child then recites the almost correct storyline!!

Nikita,

I understand what you are saying. You are doing a brave job taking care of your kids single-handedly. Your children are very fortunate to have a mum like you and they will (beleive me) love you much more than you'd ever expect from them. yes

I too am a stay home mum of two. Though it could be hard at times, I always think of the positive side. We earn each dollar so that we can be happy and happiness can be found with our children!!  big grin

11  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Teaching boys...differently to girls on: August 12, 2008, 05:27:26 AM
Oh Boy!!  laugh

I have a boy and a girl. I do agree that boys tend to learn things with interest if it presented in an animated and action oriented manner. My boy refuses to sit in one place when i show him the flash cards, But Prof Shichida says don't give up. He may be moving but he's still listening to your voice and he is seeing the cards even though its momentary.

Hi Nikita,

You have to have Nickelodeon channel in order to get Backyardigans. But no worries, you could enjoy them for free at their website http://www.nickjr.com/playtime/shows/blue/games/blue_feelings.jhtml?=

Have fun!
13  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / Re: Potty Training on: August 08, 2008, 02:29:00 AM
My daughter and son started about the same time around 18 mths. My daughter didn't have any accidents from when she was 2.5yrs old. She could tell me that she needs to go.

But i think my son will take longer to be accident free. Usually boys take a longer time.

The other thing that i try to do is not to put them on diapers when they are at home. They'll know that wet isn't nice and they would want to use the potty soon.

It would be great to have a software that could help teach our kids math and music. I can't wait for the beta version...  smile
