Hi Wennie

I do not see the mention of shipping cost for the exchange and I do not live in USA? Would it be cheaper than the shipping cost when I purchased the set please?

I also want to buy the rest of the set. Since you mentioned they will be out end of the year I have been waiting. But DVD8 is not out yet though scheduled for October. What is the new schedule so I can decide if I should wait longer or just exchange the dvd 1-4 now.

Thank you.

5  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: eliminating dairy products on: August 06, 2009, 03:20:57 PM
Hi

regarding the fish oil, the link for xtend-life:
http://xtend-life.com/product/Omega_3_DHA_Fish_Oil/Introduction.aspx

the other link is:http://www.omega-3.co.nz/index.pasp

The loveliness of things is the price is very affordable for a quality product, even cheaper than me buying supermarket products with 120mgDHA and 180mg EPA on 1000mg fish oil.

I give my baby 5ml of liquid iron and the content of 1 fish oil softgel every morning together, straight; and she takes them all no complaint of smell or taste, bless her. I can not take fish oil without the softgel cover myself.

By the way, probably from xtend-life website, I read that it's not good to put flavour in the fish oil.

Also, DPA is the third most common omega-3 in fish oil. There has not been a lot of research carried out on this component. However, it does appear that there are some real benefits from DPA as like DHA it is a complex fatty acid with 22 carbon bonds, unlike EPA which only has 20 carbon bonds. ALA in flaxeed oil has only 18 carbon bonds.

Here is a blog of Warren, the founder of Xtend-life on flaxeed Omega

Flaxseed oil just doesn't 'cut it'

Although flax seed oil is a good ingredient and there is nothing wrong with taking it, you must be careful that you don't take it to the exclusion of a good Omega 3 fish oil.

The reason?

As I have alluded to a number of times over the years it is because flax seed oil does not help raise your levels of DHA which is probably the most important of all the essential fatty acids.  Proponents of flax seed oil will tell you that the body can convert ALA (which is the main constituant of flax seed oil) to DHA.

This is simply not true...at least to any extent.  A minute fraction may be able to be converted but nowhere near enough to meet your body's needs.  This is because the DHA molecule is a lot more complex that the ALA molecule.  Please click here and you will find more info about why this is so.

I attach the buyer guide for Omega 3 here. It has quite a lot of interesting info.

Hi

I've read all 4 pages, still confusing what to give my baby. she is 15 months old, still drinking 4-5 bottles of formula everyday (Nestle Nan 2). She has been on formula since 6 months old due to me going back to work full time and had to go overseas for a business trip at that time. And face it not all full time working mom can keep up their milk supply, if you are going to suggest that I should have expressed milk. I have invested good money in that machine and it did not work very well for me though I tried many ways.

Well now my baby goes to a daycare. She is a picky eater, at home and at daycare. So I have been relied on her drinking formula to complete the required nutrients. I give her liquid iron to supplement her food intake as well. We are an Asian family so we don't really use milk in cooking. That part is fine then, I only have to worry about her formula now right? And the daycare's cooking, since I am sure they use heaps of dairy products in cooking and drinking. The other day I just came to pick up my baby earlier than usual and see they fed her cracker with cheese on it, and she seemed to like it.

So am I to substitute cow-milk based formula with some other formula? If so, what is the suggestion since rice milk, soy milk, animal milk, almond milk are all not good?

Or do I just drop the milk and hope she will eat all the food we cook when she is hungry? I am just so worried that she would be losing weight. Her cousin is underweight and developing problems because he is eating too little.

She also drinks once at night time and once very early in the morning when she is still asleep (we do not force her to drink, she lets us know she is hungry and in need of a drink by signs). What do I do with those meals, it seems not a way to let her get up and feed her solids at 11pm-12am or 4-5am???

Also when I have a 2nd baby, and have to drop breastfeeding before 1 year old, what should I do to give the baby nutrients without dairy? You know under 1 they need milk as they are only learning to eat solids.

A note on the fish oil, I have not been able to follow the links since I'm using my work laptop. However I've read info somewhere else regarding flaxeed oil does not provide DHA in a form readily for our bodies to absorb, and it is not easy to convert from other forms to DHA. Actually I have done a few research myself on the fish oil, and all of the products availalbe in pharmacies, supermarkets where I live (NZ) are sadly lacking in both DHA level, and information regarding their products. I bought my fish oil online from a company called Xtend-life, I found they publish the most complete info regarding fish oil, what to look for, what source of fish, how they process fish into Omega 3 oil, the level of pollutants in their fish oil (not just saying they comply to whatever standard...), what make of the capsules etc... their website is www.xtend-life.com if you want to read. Before that, during pregnancy and breastfeeding, I bought fish oil from a company called Oils for life, also online. My baby has always had a good attention span, not sure due to fish oil or not though. I only switched the fish oil because Xtend life publishes more info around their products though. Surprisingly both the companies are NZ companies, and their main source for the oil is Hoki fish, a NZ deep sea fish with natural high level of DHA.

Waiting for feedback regarding what I should do with my baby's formula feeding? Many thanks in advance.

7  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Music / Re: Piano instrument selection on: August 05, 2009, 07:59:06 PM
Your casio digital piano looks very nice. where is the pedal though? do we need one?

I check up your piano model in NZ, it is about 2 and 1/2 grand. I will have to say for that big a purchase.

Is there any other brand name good to consider in similar budget please? and is it ok to buy a 2nd hand digital piano? anything to watch out for? how old is still ok to buy for a digital piano?

thanks.
8  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Music / Re: 'Soft Mozart' discount for members of this forum on: August 03, 2009, 08:23:18 PM
Hi Helena

I forgot to ask. I have Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bits. Can I use Soft Mozart still please?

For others

I don't like Microsoft keep changing their Windows and not letting us use old version. At the time I bought my computer, they were all Windows Vista and MS 2007 for documents. Now they are talking about abandoning Vista and introducing Windows 7??? What happen to people like me? It's too expensive to buy another computer every 2-3 years.
9  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Music / Re: 'Soft Mozart' discount for members of this forum on: August 03, 2009, 08:12:56 PM
Hi Helena

my baby is 15 months old. I am using TW and Trebellina to teach her some musical notes and she is very interested in it. Why do I have to wait until she is two to teach Soft Mozart please?

I don't know anything about music or piano. Does it effect my baby learning piano via Soft Mozart please?

And what should I look for in a keyboard or digital piano to enable the Soft Mozart lessons?

Should I buy a keyboard or digital piano or piano? Does it matter to the lessons? Does it matter to the music ear or perfect pitch please?

I take it that with Soft Mozart I don't have to worry about a piano teacher yet??? When do I have to start worry about that, or not at all please?

And I am living in New Zealand. How much would it be to ship to NZ please?
Many thanks.
10  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Photo eyeplay creation... on: July 10, 2009, 12:53:12 AM
Martina

Thanks for the files too. My daughter loves them. I used them to create fun break between math and reading lessons. I usually only have time to show lessons on computer to her once a day so I show a series of lessons at once. Therefore photo eye play is a great way to keep her interested. Together with play videos like Peekapoo, the belly button...

For Follow the object, my baby loves the 60 seconds best. She also likes apples and cookies more than other symbols. How did you make them please? I 'm thinking of creating one with all her favourite things in it as she does not like the light bulb much. And I'm afraid that her interest may dwindle if I keep show her same things every day.

Thanks.
11  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: Teaching English as a second language to baby on: July 03, 2009, 07:46:30 PM
Ok tagy

I found a fountain of instructions in How smart is your baby. There is so much in there that no way I can cover them all here. And it tells you not just the visual stimulation but mobile, audio etc...

Just give you an example of visual stimulation (page 97):

Contrasting environment:

for every waking moments
10" by 10" black and white checherboard squares
needs a well lighted room or corner of a room. Lighting on checherboard area should be twice the normal ambient light. Light should  never in babies' eyes but directed towards the checkerboard area.

Take 2 large pieces of foam core boards, 30" by 40". Use black construction paper of black poster board to make 10" by 10" black squares. The foam core boards are white so there is no need to make white squares. Make a checkerboard out of these materials.`

If baby is on the floor, the 2 pieces of foam core boards should be placed near to him at right angles, creating a kind of corner (they are against the walls in a corner of the room in the picture). The point is that your baby must be able to see the checkerboard wherever he/she goes. So carry them with you, and place them where your baby can see.

Ok here is another example

Outline bit of intelligence cards

example: square shape - black shape on white background

frequency: 10 daily
intensity: black images on white 11' by 11'' posterboard
duration: 5 to 10 seconds
content: 1 to 3 bit of intelligence cards
environment: well lighted room with extra light shining on the cards as they are shown

cradle your baby gently in your arms or place him in a comfortable position on his back on a bed or on the floor. hold the card 12" to 18" from his face and say "square".

Now wait and give him time to find the card. This may take several seconds. When he finds the card repeat in a loud, clear voice "square".
now give him a hug and tell him how good he is. at first do only one card per session so not to tire him out.

repeat this 10 times during the day. at the end of the day, retire the square card and choose another simple image like "circle".

at the end of the week come back to the square card and cycl through these same 7 cards again, one each day.

do this for 3 weeks. now you are ready to move on and start adding new outline cards.

Tagy that's enough typing for me right now. Hope it helps.

Kathy
12  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: Teaching English as a second language to baby on: July 03, 2009, 07:18:22 PM
Hi Tagy

what do you mean by "2nd language" for English. Do you mean you will teach English less than another language, or only selected words?

From all the right brain methods I have known, your mother tongue language is a foreign language to your baby as much as other languages. Your baby also can absorb anything in any amount that you can present to her/him. So I don't think you have to limit what to teach in english.

May I suggest that you plan to teach English the same way you plan to teach your mother tongue? You can introduce English in the same sequence/pattern. Say if you plan to teach your baby about family first then colour then shapes etc, then do the same with English lessons.

Saying that, your baby is still 2 months old. I agree with Qisdhi mom that stimulation cards are the way to go. and they are pictures, not words.

You can get ideas on how to present the cards with Doman books (available on amazon.com or IAHP website if you don't have them already). These books are worth keeping.

I have lent some of my doman books to a friend. will see if the books I've got right now telling anything about infant stimulation. If yes I will tell you. My baby started much later so I did not actually do stimulation cards.

13  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: E-mail from IAHP- Teaching math in different languages on: July 03, 2009, 07:01:09 PM
Joha

Excellent, karma to you.

I have been wondering the same thing. Now I know what to do. At least I will not have to repeat all math sessions in all the languages that I would like to show to my baby. It also means less lessons to plan.

14  Products Marketplace / Product Partners / Re: Trebellina review on: July 03, 2009, 06:55:07 PM
Hi all

Just want to update you on Trebellina discount coupon.

It turned out they have added my coupon code to their discount codes before Annette came back to me. So I have bought the DVD. Can't wait to receive and play it.

Annette came back and explained to me that all coupons on brillkids forum were expired 1 June 09. somehow brillkids has not removed it so we still can buy from brillkids forum. So Trebellina company just honours the coupons but they have to add individual discount codes one by one. It sounds a painful process.
15  Products Marketplace / Product Discussions and Reviews / Re: Glenn Doman CD-ROMS any good? on: June 30, 2009, 06:07:32 AM
Hi everyone

I've got Windows Vista Ultimate. Does that mean I can not use these CD-roms?

I see they have art work in there. How is the quality of the picture please?

I love the idea of all 5 languages in 1 CD. I start to have so many DVD around the house.

Cheers
