EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Would you prefer teaching British English than US English?

In a nutshell, we should follow what's commonly accepted/used in our country. If I were to be in the US, I'll go for American english as it just doesn't make much sense to teach my baby British english. As for me, my country uses British english, hence British english will be my choice. Imagine teaching your baby "mommy" and "color" only to confuse her at school with "mummy" and "colour". This is unnecessary confusion.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: For those following Doman reading schedules-Which stage are you in?

I started using Doman's method 2 months ago. My daughter is now 14 months old. We've covered almost 200 words by now. I've not repeated any of them, and I don't really test her.. so I am in the same situation as many others who aren't certain if their babies are taking all in. I plan to move into couplets soon as I've just completed adjectives and color words. Still keeping my fingers crossed that one day she'll amaze me by reading out a word!

I also prefer real photos. Some cartoons are too simplified and it does not accurately represent the real thing. Having said that I think babies are able to recognize similarity between pictures, real thing and probably cartoons. Just the other day, my daughter pointed out a lion statue in a magazine and said "grrrrr". I've only showed her real lion photos.

I'm just wondering if we use starfall to teach abc, will it interfere with Doman's method of teaching sight words? He's recommending abcs only at a later age after we're done with single, couplets, phrases, sentences or even books.

It's comforting to hear that, Tanikit. Like others, I am also eager to see results on my 14 month baby. We started at 12 months. Like you said, she sometimes pick the right one but most times are not very interested to be tested. Naturally, I'll be a bit sceptical if my method is working since I'm not able to really test her at this age. I guess I'll just need to continue what I'm doing and have trust in her that she's picking them up!

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: YBCR vs BRILLKIDS

I have been teaching my little girl on LR for the past 2 months. I'm curious about YBCR. Can anyone help with my questions below?
1. Is it expandable? I have the impression that the video is limited to certain number of words. After you're done with it, you can just put away the video - useless after that. 2. Does the video teach couplets or short phrases? 3. Is the teaching material (pullout cards) expandable? Similar to the video, it's not going to be very useful if just limited to certain number of words.
Thanks!

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Any Advice for a working mom to use Flash Card?

I think there's a misunderstanding here. I read the book. It says 3 sessions of a category each day. Each category has 5 words, meaning your baby will see each of the words 3 times a day. Depending on how well you can cope, you can teach more than 1 category per day.
I don't think anyone is able to show 15 sessions of each category in a day - that's extreme.
Having said this, the book served just as a guide. You do not need to follow 100%. For eg, I can only do at most 2 sessions on a weekday, and 4 sessions on weekends. I try to teach 4-5 categories each day.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: How I taught my toddler to read

Hi Jeimy
Do you mean that you make sure your daughter knows the meaning of the words before flashing them before her? Since there are so many words to introduce, I often flash words that were never previously explained to her. Is this ok?
Part of my dilemma is this. If I slot in 1 picture for every word, I won't be able to flash those words fast one after another. Is it ok to flash one word quickly (1 sec), then followed by a long pause on the picture while explaining the meaning of the word? I'm using this method every day, hence I want to be sure I'm doing the right thing.

KL, can we know when this feature will be implemented? It's going to be very useful especially the one that prevents repetition of random equations. Will current users of LM be notified when a new version is released? If there's a new version, how do we upgrade from the old version? Is the license file the same?

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: How I taught my toddler to read

Jeimy34, great to hear your work and how you taught your daughter to read! I'm also in the same boat, trying to teach my daughter to read. She's now 13+ months old. I'm using LR exclusively as I find it more convenient rather than having to make my own flash cards. Here's how I do it. We've been at it for ~1 month.
1. I show a word quickly, followed by a picture of it. 2. 6 categories of 5 words each. 3. Due to time constraints, I can only show her 2x a day for each category.
The problem is that I do not know if she's actually reading the words. She pays attention when I show her the words and pictures on LR. I tried testing her at times, but she doesn't bother much.
I have a few doubts. 1. Am I doing the right thing by showing words followed by pictures? 2. Or should I just flash purely words quickly one after another? 3. Do you stop on every word and explain the meaning of the word? If not, how will she appreciate the meaning of the words?
Hope you and the rest of the forummers can shed some light to my questions.
Thanks!
