EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Music / Re: Themes To Remember Vol. 1, Classical Magic

I have Themes to Remember Vol. 2. My daughter loves it. As soon as I play the CD she starts saying "dancing, dancing" and tries to dance and ask me to dance with her. She is 2. I don't think she recognized the songs authors yet but sometimes she will repeat when they say ex. "Vivaldi" or few words of the lyrics that she knows. As Kizudo mentioned is good for us too because it helps us to learn and teach our little ones when we hear the songs in somewhere else. I got my CD w/book in this website: http://www.bookch.com/music.htm, cheaper than Amazon.com

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: What is the point of teaching sign language

What was going on? If you remember, maybe I can help.
Another thing, you mentioned that you don't watch the videos with her every time. I highly recommend you do that b/c she will learn to sign much faster if you are doing the signs with the videos and helping her sign too. I used to do the sign and then show Gabriel how to sign it with his hands. He would then try to do it himself. I think that really helped, plus you learn the signs too. Kids love to show off. If you're sitting there with her, she will be more compelled to do a sign rather than doing it by herself.
Nkockaday is right. No only you will learn the sign but you will see how your kid does the sign for the things she is learning. For example, my daughter used to sign water with only 1 finger; but because she was doing it along with the video, I knew what she was trying to say. Same thing for rhino, cracker, train.

No, I don't think so. In my daughter's case, it can be that at the beginning I did not talk to her at lot. Also, my husband travels a lot and we don't have too many family here, so she depends on me to learn. Also, being expose to both language, she is picking the easiest words to say for everything. Also, she is creating her signs for thinks she likes and I haven't taught her yet and use them along with talking. Sign language is helping me to talk more to her because when I sign I say the word in both language.

Hi Joha, I started teaching my daughter SL when she was a lot older that your daughter with the BST and ST dvds. I did it because we couldn't understand what she was trying to say. She is kind of a late talker and doesn't like to repeat. However, she would repeat a sign for me if I ask her. Ex. Please, want, more, cracker. Of course, if she really wants something from me.
Her first sign was bird and she did it when we were strolling. Milk is a sign that she does it with the dvd, she won't really ask too much for milk. Sign language has giving her more vocabulary and a way to express her self. Sometimes she only signs, signs and says the word or just says the word.
A couple weeks ago we had a birthday party at a pottery art place. My daughter wanted to played with some foams and she was able to ask for all the ones that she wanted to use and play. Even though she could not say the word she was able to communicate.
The other thing that I like about signing with her is that I can sign and say the word either in Spanish or English and she understand that I am talking about the same thing.

Thanks for sharing your story Andrea. I just send your post to my husband who sometimes thinks I should stop investing in early learning products because he does not see results. I love the idea of my daughter experience an instrument. Right now, we are enrolled in The Music Class but I would love to have the opportunity to offer her a private music teacher. However, music teachers are more expensive in the USA and at this moment we can not afford it. A piano software seems as a good alternative for a beginner. Hopefully, your post can motivate my husband to consider it.
Thanks again.

PY, I will say it doesn't matter. My daughter started with Vol 1 Baby signing time and she loved it so I bought later BST vol. 2 and 3. These dvds are very easy to follow. They are not too fast as some segments of ST dvds and the music is great. They were a hit in my house so we decided to get also the series one.. At the beginning she didn't like ST vol. 1 so I jumped to Vol.6 My favorite things and she did like it. Later, after she got used to the new format I showed her the rest of them in any order. Her favorites are vol.8 the great outdoors and vol. 9 the zoo train. She tries to sign and says butterfly to ask for vol.9 and signs gorilla and crocodile for vol.9. She still has not seen vol.10, 11, 12 and 13.

I just want to say that I am glad I read this thread couple months ago and decided to get BST and ST. My daughter had a very short vocabulary but since she is watching this DVDs her vocabulary has increased enormously. I saw results fast. Her first sign she did was bird and my husband and I were surprised when she was signing bird every time she saw one. I think her second word was cracker. We had to move soon to the ST Dvds because she was learning too fast. Another thing I love about teaching her to sign is that I sign anyword to her and say it in Spanish also so she can relate the sign to both language. I love when she hears the word water or sees it and signs water but says "agua". The only problem that I see is that now she signs and says baby sign, baby sign, baby sign and gets mad if I play YBCR, so I had to stopped for a while or make sure YBCR is playing before she is in front of the TV.

Hi Arminta, It is wonderful that you are educating yourself before the baby arrive. This website has a lot of information about different approachs of early education. I am not an expert on early education but I can tell you what I am doing. Because, I started after my daughter was 1 year old and she was a very active baby I found that the easiest for us was to use YBCR dvds and LR. You are going to be able to start early so it is going to be easier for you to use Doman's methods with real flash cards if you get interested in his method. In case that you decide to get LR, MAC has a program called Bootcamp that helps you to install Windows in your computer. I have a Mac too and I wanted to get LR so I had to get Windows XP first.
