1  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: Math-U-See? on: February 05, 2010, 05:27:40 PM
Dear Mom2Ross,

I have a daughter whom I tried to use Math-U-see manipulatives with at age 3 to 3.5 years old. She was NOT interested at all. After going to a large homeschool conference/expo, I found another math teaching curriculum which my then 2.5 year old and now 4 year old daughter absolutely LOVES! She begs to "play RightStart Math". It is teaching math concepts in game format. It is easy for the parent to teach because it spells out exactly what I have to say and what items I need to take out of the box for today's lesson. One drawback is that it only goes up to about 8th grade level (US). But, I think I would use it for beginning levels anyway.

Hope this helps,

2  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Music / Re: classroom music for little mozarts on: January 31, 2010, 07:06:10 AM
Dear Reei,

I have not specifically used the "packaged" Music for Little Mozarts.

http://www.allegromusiconline.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=AMO&Category_Code=AMLM

However, I HAVE tried the Lesson Book, Discovery Book, Workbook and CDs for Level 1 &2. I used it for my 3 year old daughter.

Lesson Book: overall good layout for a good story line to engage young children in the learning of music theory and note-reading

Discovery Book: I like the creative songs to solidify certain music theory concepts. Certain theme songs in here are also very catchy and good to review at each session.

Workbook: only good if you're doing one on one. If you have a classroom of children, this is rather boring and hard to control as far as time it takes to finish the activity page.

CD: contains a) all of the lesson book materials narrated then demonstrated and b) all the songs in the Discovery book played by an orchestra or instrumental group.

All in all, I think it's a good program for even a 3 year old though it says in the cover that it's meant for 4 and 5 year olds. I only bought the Lesson book and Discovery book for the next levels as I think I can do without the Workbook and CD. If you can play the piano yourself, there's really no need for the CD.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask any further questions.

If you're going for note-reading proficiency, then I would recommend "We Hear and Play" by Taneda. My daughter liked it alot better for note-reading skill-building.

Sincerely, Violin  smile
3  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Music / Re: Anyone used Taneda Method to teach perfect pitch? on: January 09, 2010, 07:07:53 AM
Dear Laughingwater,

Yes! I am currently using the Taneda method "We Hear and Play" to teach my daughter piano. We started when she was 3 1/2 years old. She just turned 4 years old a few days ago. The color-coding & large notes & large everything definitely makes learning to read notes MUCH easier. I actually am amazed at how easily she can read & unknowingly count the quarter notes, half notes, whole notes, etc. I started piano with the Bastien method when I was 5. I wasn't going to start my daughter this young. However, I wanted to give her the best opportunity to develop perfect pitch. So, we've been playing the perfect pitch training games. I have to say that she's not as excited about the games as I thought she would be. She definitely is MUCH more interested in "playing piano" and reading through the piano repertoire book. We did "piano lessons" with the Taneda method book off and on for about 6 months--depending on her interest level. Now, at age 4, we've "graduated" to Vol. 2. I've been very happy with the program overall as far as teaching note-reading. I have yet to see if the perfect pitch is there yet. From their textbook, it seems that you won't be able to tell if the perfect pitch is there until later even though the training starts early. I have to say that she can match notes/sounds much better than 1 year ago. However, I'm not sure if that's one more year of life experience rather than the Taneda method alone. Hope this helps!

Sincerely, Violin
4  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Music / Re: Violin for 3 year old? on: January 09, 2010, 06:49:14 AM
Hi! I have a daughter who is a petite asian-american like her parents. I bought her a 1/16 violin from a vendor on ebay for $49 (included taxes and shipping)! I did one of those "Make an offer" deals on ebay and got them to come down on the price a few dollars. She was 3 1/2 years old when we purchased it. She still fits it now--she just turned 4 a few days ago. I don't think any violin that small is going to sound that good--they're all a little screechy because of their size, the length of the strings, the aptitude of the violinist, etc. I've been happy with the quality of it. She's ecstatic because she has a violin she can call her own. It's all fun at this age!

Thanks for the info you both shared!
6  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: Which second language and why? on: April 25, 2009, 07:33:52 AM
We live in the US. Both my husband and I are ABCs (American-Born Chinese).

My Hubby's Experience
His mother spoke to him in Mandarin for his first year of life then promptly switched to English for the rest of his childhood. His father spoke English all the way through--that's all he can speak. He went to Mandarin classes for many years as a child but told his parents that this was not necessary "because we live in the US". He grew up in Alhambra, CA (a Chinese enclave of Los Angeles). Thus, my hubby speaks mainly English and had VERY halting mandarin when I married him 6 years ago. In the 3 years since we've had our first daughter, he's progressed amazingly to holding full conversations with her in Mandarin!

My Experience
My parents spoke to me in Cantonese. The joke is that I didn't know anything beyond my name, my siblings' names, ABCs and numbers when I went started preschool at age 4. After 6 weeks, I came home trying to speak English to my mother--PERFECTLY FLUENTLY! I grew up in southern California. My mother promptly instituted a new rule: Cantonese was to be the language that we (my sisters and I) should use to speak to her. If we used any other language, we might as well be speaking to the wall. This definitely kept my ability in Cantonese intact. We were sent to Mandarin lessons every Sunday from age 4 to 16. So, now at age 33, I am fluent in English, Cantonese and Mandarin. I read and write in Mandarin but speak Cantonese better. English, by far, is my strongest language.

My Daughter's Experience (so far)
She is 3 yrs 3 mths old currently. Because of our personal experiences, we decided before ever having her that we would REQUIRE all our children to be as multi-lingual as possible. So, from Day 1, my hubby would speak to my daughter in Mandarin (halting as it was) and ask for help from me. It was easy because babies can't respond to you verbally at the beginning--so he just kept asking how to say words that he didn't know. He would read to her in English because that's all he could do. Now he's learned to insert words in Mandarin as he is able. As for me, because I speak both Cantonese & Mandarin, I have been speaking to her in Cantonese when my hubby isn't around and in Mandarin when he IS around. I am the main caregiver. So, currently her strongest language is Cantonese. She definitely can speak Mandarin AND English enough to get around and make her needs known clearly.  smile NO CONFUSION at all. She speaks Mandarin to Daddy, Cantonese to Mommy, and English with everyone else. (We live in a mainly Caucasian area--English-predominance). We started learning Spanish together when she was 18 months. We listen to Christian songs (that I already know in English) in Spanish. That way, I already have a headstart because I know the tune and just have to work on getting the words along with her. Yes, learning several languages (Cantonese, Mandarin, and English) concurrently definitely delays your verbal output skills but once the speaking started, it has never stopped! She started saying single words around 15 months, full sentences by 20 months. We also used Baby Signs since age 6 months--she started responding with signs at 8 months and that helped alot since we knew she would be late in starting to talk due to multiple languages being taught concurrently.

So, for us, Cantonese/Mandarin #1 because it's our culture/heritage and it will be useful in my children's generation if they want to do business with or in China. English #2 because we live in the US. Spanish #3 because that's the next most spoken language in the world--very useful in California (which is where we live).

I hope this helps!  Kudos to all of you trying to teach your kids more than 1 language--I believe it really helps you think faster. It definitely helped me!  big grin

8  EARLY LEARNING / Homeschooling / Any Homeschoolers in Singapore? on: April 25, 2009, 06:54:26 AM
Hi Everyone!

My husband and I are thinking about migrating from the US to Singapore. Are there many of you who homeschool in Singapore? Do you know many others who homeschool but aren't on the brillkids forum? I went to secondary school in Singapore from 1989-1991. Back then, homeschooling wasn't as "trendy" in Singapore. I wonder how it is now.

Thanks,
Violin
9  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Music / Perfect Pitch Training? on: April 25, 2009, 06:30:54 AM
Hello Everyone!

I am curious to know if any of you have done perfect pitch training with your children? If so, have any of you tried any other methods besides the Doman-style ones that I have read about on this forum?

I found a website: www.wehearandplay.com which seems to promote an interesting game-approach to perfect pitch training and learning the basics for piano-playing between for children ages 3-5. The "Taneda Method" apparently was developed in Germany. The "We Hear and Play" 3 volume course is translated into English from the original German version written by Mr. and Mrs. Taneda.

I am interested in hearing about any of your experiences.

Thanks in advance,
Violin
10  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / English, Mandarin and Spanish--all at once? on: March 26, 2009, 06:27:37 AM
Hello!

I'm new here and am still researching the Doman Method for teaching young babies to read.
We speak English, Mandarin and Cantonese in our home. I'd like to teach reading of these same languages (and possibly more).
Have any of you tried doing the reading flashcards in English, Chinese and Spanish?
If so, did you do them simultaneously or only one language at a time?
In the daily 5 flashcard sets, did you use 5 cards in English for one session and then 5 cards in Chinese for another session, etc.?
I'm just curious what's been tried and what the results were like.
Thanks for any info any of you might have.  smile
