4  BEYOND EARLY LEARNING (for older years) / General Discussions - After Early Learning / Re: Developing independence- help me out please on: June 15, 2015, 05:37:41 AM
I love some of these ideas. There are some things I definitely need to start working on. I would love my 5 year old to start working on one meal per week (in the hope that it extends to all planning, shopping, cooking!). Also giving a speech. And one that I really want to put serious thought in is starting their own business. Will need to consider some ideas.

I have to admit that I tend to just do most things myself as it is easier... And I'm not very organised. But I know that I need to start now so that they can actually become independent because I seriously don't plan to be completely supporting them still when they are 20.
5  BEYOND EARLY LEARNING (for older years) / General Discussions - After Early Learning / Re: Developing independence- help me out please on: June 10, 2015, 11:21:17 AM
Fair enough. And as I said I'm definitely not free range!!  Our 'eldest' is only 8 so we are just coming up to the when can we leave him at home by himself for short periods of time question.  He takes after me though and isn't one for taking 'risks' so he isn't comfortable with it anyway.

I'm sure whatever you decide will be right for your children.
6  BEYOND EARLY LEARNING (for older years) / General Discussions - After Early Learning / Re: Developing independence- help me out please on: June 10, 2015, 02:21:58 AM
Interesting topic and I know I'm personally not good at allowing my children out of my sight at all (8, 5 and 11 with special needs). I probably need to do it more.

But, I do wonder about leaving your 3 children at home while you are working not because I don't believe they are capable but because of the legal aspect. Queensland law is unclear but it states that a child under 12 is not to be left at home for an unreasonable amount of time (what is unreasonable is open to interpretation). I have absolutely no legal knowledge but I think the 11 year old would probably be in the fuzzy area but the 7 and 9 year old would probably be considered too young (I don't think a child under 8 is allowed to be left at home at all without a responsible adult). And leaving the 11 year old 'in charge' of the other 2 probably wouldn't be seen as sufficient either.  Apparently Qld law is the harshest in the country with the penalty being up to 3 years imprisonment for the adult.

As I said I really don't know the legal ins and outs and I'm pretty much the opposite of a free range parent so feel free to ignore  smile

8  Products Marketplace / Second-Hand Sell + Swap / Little Reader Books - Australia on: June 09, 2015, 03:22:36 AM
$50

Set of 25 books in good condition. Minimal use.  1 book has been covered in clear contact which has some wrinkles and bubbles but otherwise nothing wrong with them.  Also some pages for making flash cards (1/2 A4 size includes words in different fonts and full colour photos) includes colours, animals, parts of body, action words ...

I'm in Australia and postage anywhere else would be very expensive. Postage within Australia is $17 or pick up in Brisbane. Books and flashcard pages weigh 4.5 kg.
9  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: 3 Very Impressive Books That Have Changed My Outlook On Post EL Life on: March 02, 2015, 04:51:23 AM
Thanks for reviving this thread. I read it when you first started it and meant to make sure that I read all the books that were recommended by everyone. Have now made a list of those I haven't read and will start working through them. I'm sure there will be lots of new ideas and old ideas that I have forgotten.
10  EARLY LEARNING / Homeschooling / Re: Who All is Using Saxon Math? on: November 12, 2014, 11:04:22 PM
I had a quick look and I have 8/7 and algebra 1/2. I really only looked through them for a few minutes but it looks like the first 1/2 (60 lessons) of 8/7 are a review of 7/6.  We will probably just read through those lessons and do the lesson practice and skip the mixed practice ( that saves 1800 questions just there!). If he needs more practice of something I will just find worksheets on whatever topic we need. The next 60 lessons I will decide when we get there:)

There seems to be quite a jump between 8/7 and Alg 1/2.  The print is smaller and there seems to be less white space on the page. Also the language used seems to jump as well.
11  EARLY LEARNING / Homeschooling / Re: Who All is Using Saxon Math? on: November 12, 2014, 12:03:38 PM
He had forgotten some of it but you review everything all the time so it didn't take too long. The hardest thing has been to try to get him back doing a majority of it independently. We haven't got there yet...
I do have the next 2 or 3 levels of Saxon so I guess I had 'planned' to follow Saxon the whole way but they are pretty loose plans.
I know some people only do even/odd problems. Yes, I will consider how we can still use it without it being detrimental to our schooling. It is a good program but a lot of work especially for a 7 year old.
12  EARLY LEARNING / Homeschooling / Re: Who All is Using Saxon Math? on: November 11, 2014, 12:54:05 AM
Was hoping others would reply to this..... I know there are a few others who use Saxon here.

My 7 year old son is almost finished 7/6. Plan is to finish by the end of the year.  We did 5/4 and 6/7 quite quickly but then we got about 1/2 way through 7/6 and pretty much dropped it for close to a year as my son was sick and it was just too much of a struggle to get him to do math or much of anything else until he was feeling better.
We never did the earlier years. All we did was a (American) kindergarten workbook that I had and than a (Australian) grade 2 and I think part of grade 3 workbooks that again were simply because I had them. Then we jumped into 5/4.
From memory I think he was a bit over 5 1/2 years old.
We chose Saxon because it was a solid program that was well recommended among homeschoolers and if we follow it through I know that he will be very solid in math.  It was also relatively easy to get second hand copies of including solutions booklets which become important the higher you go.
I think I'm using the older editions but would have to double check. I know they are
recommended particularly as you get higher.
We don't do the supplemental booklets. The drill sheets are beneficial but they are long for young children. For basic multiplication/division I think an ipad app would be easier and a lot more fun.
We just read the lesson together from the book.
We don't tweak it or keep it fun Sad

Which brings us to where we are at this point. It has been good but it is definitely not fun or inspiring a love of math in my child. We will definitely finish 7/6 but I'm not sure where we are going from there.

I also have a 4 year old daughter and I'm not sure whether I will use Saxon with her or not. She is just a different child and doesn't seem to pick up math ideas as quickly as my son did.  But I will see where she is in a year.

13  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: Early learning: Hundreds Board on: September 28, 2014, 12:44:56 AM
Congratulations. Being able to count to 100 is always such a milestone with counting. And counting in different languages is fabulous!
14  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: My daughter overcounts - what should I do to correct it? on: September 28, 2014, 12:43:30 AM
Not sure what you are doing but when starting to learn one-to-one counting it is best to start with concrete objects that they can move while they count them. So if you start with blocks you would have her actually pick up the block and drop it into a bucket as she counts so that she can not keep counting them. If it is something smaller she can hand them to you as she counts. As she gets better she would just move them to one side. Once you move on to representations of objects (pictures) you wild have her mark each object as she counts them with a marker or place a counter on them or similar.
I know there are also some simple ipad aps that will only let you count each item once and they will somehow identify the objects that have already been counted. It really needs to be clear which ones have been counted and which haven't when you start out.
15  Products Marketplace / Second-Hand Sell + Swap / Re: Can anyone from America help me out? please on: September 27, 2014, 11:04:43 PM
Sorry it isn't easier to change out for you.  I've never seen the younger grades as I said so I had no idea. Hope you find some American money smile
