We've used workbooks and websites and we like using websites more to help save trees. A great one we like to use is Beestar.

What we've done in the past is work on letter and the letter sound. For example, A makes this sound and make an apple craft. It might not seem like it but in a year or so they pick up so easily and everything makes a lot more sense. I have kids telling me past crafts we made for that letter which I thought they were just so lost during the time! After that definitely work on sightwords, trying to sound the words out etc., and slowly progress to reading books!

Love Beestar! Simple and easy to use for the kiddos. They've excelled so quickly with its natural progression that they've moved on to GT math programs in school.
