1  BEYOND EARLY LEARNING (for older years) / General Discussions - After Early Learning / buddy Lloyd, and the interview p on: July 20, 2018, 05:00:31 AM
The Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame pulled Kelly Gruber from its induction weekend festivities after the former Toronto Blue Jays third baseman made an awkward appearance during a Pitch Talks panel discussion a day earlier.

Gruber was briefly on stage at the Homestand Sports event Thursday night with host Ashley Docking and Rogers Sportsnet broadcaster Kevin Barker in Toronto. In a joint statement Friday Glenn Robinson Jersey , the Hall of Fame and Pitch Talks said the proceedings were stopped 45 minutes early due to Gruber’s ”unacceptable and inappropriate behavior.”

”Basically what happened was by the time he got on stage he appeared to be inebriated,” said Homestand Sports founder Kevin Kennedy. ”He was just acting sort of obnoxious, kind of erratic Authentic Tre'Quan Smith Jersey , he was confrontational with our host, Ashley, and quite quickly I knew that this wasn’t going in the right direction.”

Gruber was one of several former Blue Jays chosen to participate in various Hall events in the lead-up to Saturday’s ceremony in Ontario Wade Boggs Jersey , where former major league stars Pedro Martinez and Lloyd Moseby will be inducted along with baseball historian William Humber.

Gruber’s representative, Don Graham, emailed a statement from the former player to The Canadian Press on Friday evening.

”There’s two sides to every story and I would love to tell mine Bobby Cox Jersey ,” Gruber said. ”Maybe what I said was taken the wrong way. My intention for being there was to honor my teammate and buddy Lloyd, and the interview part went south for a variety of reasons which I will detail at a later date.”

The 56-year-old Gruber made his big league debut with the Blue Jays in 1984. He won a World Series with Toronto in 1992 and ended his career with the Angels the following year.

2  BEYOND EARLY LEARNING (for older years) / General Discussions - After Early Learning / s sixth career playoff shutout on: July 20, 2018, 04:47:57 AM

LAS VEGAS — It looked like it was going to be so easy.

The expansion Vegas Golden Knights swept their first-ever playoff series with the Los Angeles Kings Authentic Breeland Speaks Jersey , then opened the second round of the Western Conference playoffs with a stunningly lopsided 7-0 victory over the San Jose Sharks.

But the Sharks won Game 2 in double overtime 4-3, and bounced back from a 4-3 overtime loss in Game 3 to blank the Golden Knights 4-0 on Wednesday night to even the best-of-seven series at 2-2.

Still, Vegas coach Gerard Gallant said it’s no time to push the panic button heading into Friday night’s Game 5 at T-Mobile Arena.

“We’re 2-2 and we’ve got home ice,” Gallant said Thursday afternoon. “It’s best two out of three. There’s no panic. We get ready to play.”

Vegas is 32-11-2 on its home ice this season. However, San Jose won the last meeting there and comes in with momentum, winning two of the last three games in the series.

“We’re playing in the second round of the playoffs Didi Gregorius Jersey ,” Vegas forward Pierre-Edouard Bellemare said. “We’re playing a good team. It’s how we handle it. We had times in (Wednesday night’s shutout loss) that we played better in the game, but for 60 minutes they were the better team.”

Gallant took it one step further, questioning the effort of a few of his players in the loss.

“It’s about playing fast,” Gallant said. “When you don’t play fast, you give San Jose a chance to break out and that’s what happens. They played fast last night and we didn’t have a chance to break out. It all goes hand-in-hand.

“When our forecheck is good we play a real good game. … When 10 to 15 percent of the guys don’t show up and forecheck like all the other guys, that makes the biggest difference in the world. San Jose had 20 guys competing and playing hard last night Tyler Flowers Jersey , and that’s why they were the better team.”

One thing is for certain. The Sharks have adjusted to the speed of the Golden Knights after the Game 1 blowout and put a premium on forechecking. They’re an overtime loss in Game 3 away from leading the series, 3-1.

“There’s a bunch of pieces that go into that,” San Jose coach Peter DeBoer said of slowing down the Vegas attack. “Puck management is a big part of it. They feed off turnovers and transition as quickly as any team in the league. That’s obviously a huge part of it. Your attention to detail through the neutral zone, top of the circles in your end to top of the circles in the other end, has to be really good to handle that.”

“When we make them come through us, 200 feet through all five guys Authentic Mike White Jersey , we’re a lot tougher team to play against,” Sharks goalie Martin Jones said.

Jones, yanked after allowing five goals on 13 shots in the opener, bounced back to garner his sixth career playoff shutout on Wednesday night, stopping 34 shots in the process. San Jose also was a perfect 5-of-5 on the penalty kill.

“We’ve done a better job of not forcing plays through the neutral zone,” Sharks forward Logan Couture said. “If you don’t have it Jimmy Wynn Jersey , just chip it and forecheck. That at least gives our defensemen a chance to get their guy and step up on them so they’re not flying through the neutral zone.”

Still, San Jose must find a way to win at least one more time at T-Mobile Arena, where a Game 7 would be played if needed on Tuesday, to advance to the Western Conference finals.

“It’s nothing to worry about,” Vegas center Cody Eakin said of Wednesday night’s loss. “It’s 2-2. Two of the (remaining) three are at home. We have the advantage.”

3  BEYOND EARLY LEARNING (for older years) / General Discussions - After Early Learning / where I’m doing my job with on: July 20, 2018, 04:28:13 AM
The Seattle Mariners signed general manager Jerry Dipoto to a multiyear contract extension on Friday Larry Doby Jersey , a reward for the club being on track to end the longest playoff drought in the four major professional sports in the U.S.

The agreement comes with the Mariners 24 games above .500, and striving to make the postseason for the first time since 2001.

”We’re obviously happy with the work he’s done so far and look forward to the next several years as well,” team president and CEO Kevin Mather said. ”We are having some success on the field, but when I said the work he has done so far, I’m referring to day one. We hired him Sept. 28, 2015 and he hasn’t stopped since the day he got here.”

Since the start of the 2016 season Mitch Moreland Jersey , Dipoto’s first full year, the Mariners have the eighth-best record in the majors at 220-192. Seattle’s 56-32 start through 88 games is tied for the second-best mark in franchise history. Only the 2001 team that tied the major league mark for most wins in a season with 116 victories surpassed the start of the 2018 Mariners.

”This is a no-brainer for me,” Dipoto said. ”I told you all when I got here that this was a dream job for me. It’s a great market in a city that is starved to win, with an opportunity to be creative.”

While there are still issues in the farm system, Dipoto has succeeded in making the major league product better. He has turned over a roster that had gotten old and added key younger pieces like Mitch Haniger, Jean Segura and Dee Gordon Authentic Sylvester Williams Jersey , who are major contributors in Seattle’s start to this season.

Dipoto also has locked up key parts of Seattle’s core for the next several seasons, either through club control through arbitration or long-term extensions. Seattle’s current starting rotation is under contract through the 2019 season and the only everyday player without club control beyond this season is designated hitter Nelson Cruz.

When Dipoto took over in 2015, the Mariners were looking for stability after a tough finish to Jack Zduriencik’s tenure with the club. Dipoto himself was trying to rebuild his own career after a less than amicable departure from the Los Angeles Angels amid conflict with manager Mike Scioscia.

Dipoto made numerous moves in his first year with Seattle, starting the roster churn that added more youth to the club. Seattle won 86 games in 2016 before backsliding to 78-84 last year amid numerous injuries to the pitching staff.

Seattle was thought to be a fringe playoff contender this year but is in the thick of the hunt nearing the All-Star break.

”My time here – the 2 1/2 years – has, I think, gone just as well as I hoped it could go Authentic Frank Ragnow Jersey , provided we finish strong,” Dipoto said.

”It takes a village to build a baseball organization, and we’ve got a pretty good village. This is a new day to move forward. The Mariners are playing very well. I’m thrilled for this group, but I’m more thrilled that this group has an opportunity to continue to do what they’re doing.”

With Dipoto locked up, the focus turns to manager Scott Servais, whose contract is up at the end of the 2018 season.

”Scott has been my partner for far longer than we’ve been here Matt Garza Jersey ,” Dipoto said. ”Whether it be dreaming about what we wanted to create as a franchise, whether it be in player development and what we are doing in scouting, or now culminating with how to build a major league roster and how to guide it, I don’t envision a time where I’m doing my job without him doing his job.”

The Buffalo Bills hired Brian Daboll as offensive coordinator Sunday.

Coach Sean McDermott announced Daboll’s hiring two days after firing Rick Dennison.

The 42-year-old Daboll was the offensive coordinator for national champion Alabama. It was the sixth time he was part of the coaching staff for a national championship team.

Prior to last season Cheap Customized Miami Dolphins Jerseys , Daboll was the tight end’s coach for the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots. He has 17 seasons of coaching experience in the NFL, including stints as the offensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns (2009-10) Authentic Customized Titans Jerseys , Miami Dolphins (2011) and Kansas City Chiefs (2012).

Daboll has previous ties to McDermott, as he was a restricted-earnings coach at William & Mary when McDermott was a senior safety in 1997. Daboll also has western New York roots Cheap Customized Seattle Seahawks Jerseys , having graduated from St. Francis High School in Athol Springs, a few miles away from the Bills’ facility.

”We are excited to hire Brian as our offensive coordinator and welcome him back to western New York Youth Hayden Hurst Jersey ,” McDermott said in a statement posted to the team’s website. ”I know how much this area means to him. He is a good coach and a good teacher and has been part of winning programs in the NFL and in college.”

Daboll will be the Bills’ fifth offensive coordinator in six seasons.

The Bills finished 29th in offense this past season and their running attack fell to sixth after leading the league the past two seasons. Dennison’s play-calling was questioned after Buffalo scored just three points against Jacksonville in the franchise’s first playoff game in 18 years.

Daboll coordinated an Alabama offense that ranked 15th in the nation in scoring at 37.1 points per game and 13th in rushing. The Crimson Tide overcame a 10-point deficit to win the national championship game in overtime after freshman quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was inserted into the game at halftime.

As a Patriots assistant from 2000-06 and 2013-16, Daboll won five Super Bowl rings.

Whenever the Cubs come to town 49ers Cheap Jerseys , their fans fill the stands at Great American Ball Park and their offense usually carries the day. Not so for the last two.

Eugenio Suarez hit a go-ahead homer off Jose Quintana in the fifth inning, and the Cincinnati Reds held on for their fifth straight victory Friday night, 6-3 over the Cubs .

The Reds have won the first two games in the four-game set, a recent rarity in the rivalry. It’s only the second time in the last two years that they’ve won back-to-back games in a series against Chicago. The Cubs are 43-21 against the Reds over the last four seasons.

Cincinnati’s winning streak is one shy of its season high. The Reds are last in the NL Central at 30-45.

”We’re playing really good baseball right now,” Suarez said . ”When you play like that Youth Natrell Jamerson Jersey , good things can happen.”

Suarez’s two-run shot in the fifth inning off Quintana (6-6) gave him a team-high 16 homers and put the Reds ahead 4-3. Billy Hamilton and Joey Votto also singled home runs off Quintana, who had allowed only six earned runs in his last four starts combined.

Quintana hung a changeup on his second pitch to Suarez, who has four homers in his last six games.

”I just missed my spot – a bad pitch,” Quintana said through a translator. ”A bad time to have that happen.”

Suarez also singled twice and extended his hitting streak to a career-high 12 games, the longest by a Reds third baseman since Todd Frazier hit in 14 straight in 2014.

Javier Baez drove in a run with a bunt single off Luis Castillo (5-8) Johnny Townsend Jersey Raiders , and Kyle Schwarber followed with a two-run homer, his third in four games. Castillo went 5 2/3 innings for his first victory since May 24, ending a streak of four straight losses.

Raisel Iglesias retired the side in the ninth for his 12th save in 14 chances.

”That was one of our cleaner ballgames of the season,” interim manager Jim Riggleman said. ”We played a good ballgame – offensively, defensively Youth Rashaan Evans Jersey , ran the bases well, timely hitting.”

Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo went a combined 0 for 8 with three strikeouts as Chicago’s offense struggled again, managing only four hits.

”We’ve played maybe two of our least-impressive games in a month,” manager Joe Maddon said. ”It’s just not been us playing our typical game.”

DUENSING BACK

Left-handed reliever Brian Duensing was activated off the bereavement list before the game. He had been gone for four days to attend his grandfather’s funeral. The Cubs optioned right-hander Justin Hancock to Triple-A Iowa.

GREAT GRAB

Cubs reliever Justin Wilson made a diving grab of Jesse Winker’s bunt in the seventh, landing on his chest while stretching for the ball. He was shaken up for a moment but stayed in the game.

STATS

Each of Schwarber’s last three hits has been a home run. Schwarber grew up in nearby Middletown and attended Reds games at Great American. He’s batted .318 in 30 career games against the Reds with nine homers and 25 RBIs.

TOP PICK M.J. Stewart Jersey Elite , FIRST PITCH

Bengals center Billy Price threw a ceremonial pitch pregame, bouncing it to the plate. Price was the Bengals’ top pick in the draft.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Cubs: Yu Darvish could begin a rehab assignment next week. He threw 50 pitches in a simulated game without problem on Wednesday. Darvish has been sidelined since May 23 because of tendinitis in his right triceps.

Reds: Homer Bailey will make a rehab start for Triple-A Louisville on Saturday, throwing between 75 and 90 pitches. Bailey has been sidelined since June 2 with a sore right knee. He’s 1-7 with a 6.68 ERA.

UP NEXT

Cubs: Luke Farrell (2-2) will make his first start of the season after a dozen relief appearances.

Reds: Anthony DeSclafani makes his fourth start. He was sidelined for the first two months with a strained oblique suffered during spring training. DeSclafani is 2-1 with a 4.60 ERA.

6  BEYOND EARLY LEARNING (for older years) / General Discussions - After Early Learning / n’t score the equalizer despi on: July 20, 2018, 03:40:57 AM
Second night of a back-to-back on the road – at elevation no less. Losing their goaltender midway through the game. Blocking 33 shots.

No wonder Philadelphia coach Dave Hakstol was so complimentary.

”Just a gutsy effort Cheap Customized Minnesota Vikings Jerseys ,” he said.

Ivan Provorov had a goal and an assist, Petr Mrazek stopped all 17 shots he faced in relief of starter Michal Neuvirth and the Flyers held off the Colorado Avalanche 2-1 on Wednesday night.

Claude Giroux also scored as the Flyers climbed into third place in the Metropolitan Division. They’re tied in points (92) with second-place Pittsburgh, with the Penguins currently holding the tiebreaker.

”Every point matters right now,” Mrazek said.

Philadelphia looked crisp early – scoring both goals in the first period – despite losing in overtime at Dallas a night earlier. Neuvirth turned back 10 shots in his first game since suffering a lower-body injury on Feb. 18, but he exited the game midway through the second period for an undisclosed reason. Hakstol had no update after the game.

Mrazek took over and was exceptional Customized New England Patriots Jerseys , especially in the last five minutes when the Avalanche turned up the pressure. He withstood a flurry of shots in the last few seconds, including one from Gabriel Landeskog where the red light briefly came on after the puck flew by the net.

”Those five minutes felt like 15. So long,” Mrazek said. ”Lots of blocked shots in front of me, a couple of lucky bounces today. Didn’t see, I think Youth Tremaine Edmunds Jersey , one or two pucks get to my pad. Big thanks to these guys in front the last five minutes.”

Matt Nieto scored for an Avalanche team that’s on the outside of the playoff picture with five games remaining. They’ve lost three of four, including two of those at home where they’ve been stellar all season. The Avs are 16-4-1 at the Pepsi Center over their last 21 games.

What’s more, Colorado’s offense has suddenly gone silent with five goals now in the last four games.

”When our line goes cold we lose games,” star forward Nathan MacKinnon said. ”If we have some chances it’s up to us to bury them.”

Andrew Hammond had 31 saves during an emergency start for Semyon Varlamov, who was sidelined by an illness. Varlamov had appeared in 21 straight games for the Avalanche.

Hammond was called up from San Antonio of the American Hockey League earlier in the day as an insurance policy. It was his first appearance for Colorado after splitting time between the minors and a backup role. He also dealt with what the team called a head injury. Hammond was acquired as part of a three-team trade that sent Matt Duchene to Ottawa in November.

”I think it took me a period to get my legs under me Youth Ronald Jones II Jersey ,” said Hammond, who played in his first NHL game in more than a year. ”The unfortunate part is I guess the game-winning goal ended up being scored in that period. But as the game went on I settled in and started to feel better.”

Nieto cut it to 2-1 by poking the puck past Neuvirth at 5:36 of the second period.

Colorado pulled Hammond with around 90 seconds left but couldn’t score the equalizer despite turning up the pressure.

Giroux put the Flyers up 1-0 in the first with his 27th goal, and Provorov added another nearly eight minutes later with a blast from the blue line.

With Provorov’s score, the Flyers have 48 goals from their defensemen – the team’s most in a season since the group accounted for 52 in 1992-93.

”This is how the game is played right now,” Provorov said. ”You can’t create offense with just three forwards. You have to move and have mobile `D.’ I think that’s what we have on our team.”

A teenager among men Youth Durham Smythe Jersey , Juan Soto has impressed his teammates on the Washington Nationals with his maturity and, even more so, his potent bat.

Soto hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the eighth inning, and Washington beat the Baltimore Orioles 4-2 Thursday night in the deciding matchup of a three-game interleague series between neighboring rivals.

Soto, a 19-year-old rookie, is batting .326 with 16 RBIs in 28 games. Starting in the cleanup spot for the first time, he drew a walk and delivered the game’s pivotal hit.

”I think we’re all amazed every single day,” Washington ace Max Scherzer said. ”He puts together great ABs. He has antics and has some flair. He’s a great young player. He’s just enjoying himself.”

Bryce Harper led off the eighth with a double off Mychal Givens (0-4) and Trea Turner followed with a single. After Anthony Rendon struck out Mike Hughes Jersey Elite , Soto hit a liner into the gap in left-center.

”He’s got unbelievable poise,” Nationals manager Dave Martinez said of Soto. ”No matter what the situation is, he goes out there with a game plan.”

Whatever that plan is, it’s effective.

”I just try to be focused and keep working,” Soto said.

Rendon homered for the Nationals, who received seven strong innings from Scherzer and flawless work from their bullpen.

Newcomer Kelvin Herrera (1-0) pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning and Sean Doolittle got three straight outs for his 20th save in 21 tries.

Seeking to end a rare run of two straight losses, Scherzer left a tied game after allowing two runs – both on solo homers – and striking out nine.

Afterward, the right-hander heaped praise upon Soto for the manner in which he’s adapted to playing in the big leagues.

”He has a great feel for the strike zone Youth Baltimore Ravens Hats ,” Scherzer said. ”To have that type of eye, it’s remarkable for him to be able to do that at this time and this age and this level.”

Activated from the 60-day disabled list before the game, Colby Rasmus homered for the Orioles in his first at-bat since April 6.

”Me and Max, we go way back, so I felt real good,” said Rasmus, who had been sidelined with a hip injury.

In addition, Rasmus made an outstanding throw from right field to the plate Courtland Sutton Jersey Broncos , nailing Wilmer Difo on a tag-up play in the seventh inning with the score tied.

Mark Trumbo also homered for Baltimore, his sixth of the season and third in four games.

Baltimore starter Kevin Gausman gave up two runs and four hits over six innings. The right-hander was lifted with the score tied, leaving him winless in his last seven starts.

WALK THIS WAY

Martinez put Harper in the leadoff spot for the first time since May for this reason: ”The thinking is if he’s hitting up top, he’ll start taking his walks again and it will get him going.” It worked. Harper walked twice.

DAVIS COMEBACK

Struggling Orioles slugger Chris Davis will start Friday night in Atlanta, manager Buck Showalter said. Davis hasn’t played since June 11, when an 0-for-5 outing against Boston dropped his batting average to .150. Since then, he’s been working on his swing and mental approach in an effort to turn around his unproductive season.

ROSTER SHUFFLE

In addition to activating Rasmus from the DL, the Orioles optioned OF Joey Rickard to Triple-A Norfolk and moved LHP Richard Bleier (latissimus tear) to the 60-day DL. Also Customized Baltimore Ravens Jerseys , DH Pedro Alvarez cleared waivers and accepted an assignment to Norfolk.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Orioles: RHP Chris Tillman (back) will next pitch for Class A Delmarva after allowing three runs in two innings for lower Class A Aberdeen on Wednesday night.

Nationals: RHP Brandon Kintzler (flexor strain) is close to coming off the DL. Martinez hopes the reliever can pitch an inning on a rehabilitation assignment before being is activated. … Martinez said RHP Jeremy Hellickson (right hamstring strain) will soon go on a rehab assignment and pitch five or six innings.

ST. PAUL Billy Price Jersey Bengals , Minn. (AP) Brandon Sutter made a triumphant return to the Vancouver Canucks lineup.

Back after missing 21 games with a lower body injury, Sutter scored 2:50 into overtime to lift Vancouver to a 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Sunday night.

Sutter took a pass from Alexander Edler just inside the Wild blue line, cut to the inside against Jonas Brodin and beat Devan Dubnyk on the stick side.

”I think we kind of knew that the D was changing,” Sutter said. ”I tried to jump it. You get 1-on-1 with a little bit of speed, you want to try something. I just managed to get a step around him and tried to get a shot on and luckily it went through Logan Cooke Jersey Jaguars ,” Sutter said.

Vancouver coach Travis Green wasn’t sure when to use the returning center in the extra period.

”They’re got some big bodies and some of the centermen are big. I just felt like I had to use him. I was torn to put him out that one or give him an extra shift off,” he said.

Vancouver trailed late in the third period before rallying to win its second straight after going 1-7-2 in its previous 10. The Canucks, who won 5-2 Friday in Columbus, hadn’t won two in a row since taking three straight Nov. 30-Dec. 5.

Loui Eriksson and Thomas Vanek also scored for the Canucks who played without Daniel Sedin. The team’s third-leading goal scorer with 10 was a late scratch with back spasms.

Green expects Sedin to return next weekend after the team’s five-day break.

Jason Zucker and Daniel Winnik scored for Minnesota, 5-0-2 in its last seven homes games.

The Wild are also taking their mandatory break Youth John Kelly Jersey , and wanted to finish a four-games-in-six-night stretch on high note. They’ve earned earned six of a possible eight points in the stretch.

”Just looking at tonight, it’s pretty disappointing having the lead with three minutes left in the game and not coming away with the win. But I guess big picture wise, we’re slowly climbing the standings, so that’s a good thing,” Zach Parise said.

Vanek redirected a slap shot from Sam Gagner between Dubnyk’s pads to tie it with 3:12 left in regulation. Winnik scored on a one-timer from the left circle with 7:46 to play to put the Wild ahead 2-1.

While Vancouver is likely in sell mode as the trade deadline approaches late next month Youth Troy Niklas Jersey , Minnesota holds the first wild card spot in the Western Conference with five teams within four points.

”We are definitely pushing in the right direction, that’s for sure,” Nate Prosser said. ”As a team we’re all playing together better. You can sense it on the ice and in the locker room. We are building.”

The singing of the Canadian National Anthem was drowned out by fans cheering in the concourse watching the Minnesota Vikings score on the game’s final play to beat the New Orleans Saints in the NFL playoffs.

”That was an exciting game,” Dubnyk said. ”We were all paying attention in here as we got ready. It’s a big part of the city so it’s nice they were able to get it done.”

A pair of Canucks with Minnesota ties were also OK with the clamor.

”I’m sure they didn’t mean any disrespect there but all of a sudden you hear the big cheer and Brock (Boeser) and I kind of looked at each other . and we’re like, no way Youth Da'Ron Payne Jersey , and then we saw the replay and wow, what a play,” said Vanek, who spent two seasons with the Wild (2014-16). Players take note: Referees aren’t swallowing their whistles so far in the 2018 NHL playoffs.

Penalties are up more than 17 percent over the same time a year ago and are playing a substantial role in several series. Through 19 games in the first round Youth J'Mon Moore Jersey , there have been nearly 10 penalties per game. Last year, there was an average of eight penalties called through 20 games.

”The penalties that have been called in the series so far is an indication of how the referees are calling the game,” Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan said Monday. ”They’re calling it as they see it. I think discipline is of the utmost importance.”
Article continues below ...
While the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions haven’t been perfect in that regard against Philadelphia, they haven’t been derailed by a lack of discipline. Around the rest of the NHL, penalties and the ensuing power-play goals are making a big difference: There have been 38 power-play goals through Sunday’s games compared with just 21 in 2017.

The NHL wants officials to call playoffs at the same standard as the regular season, which is happening with penalties actually going up from the first period through the third. Each of the 10 pairings of referees working the playoffs has at least one who has worked the Cup Final, so the hope is having that experience helps maintain consistency.

The Washington Capitals blew two-goal leads in back-to-back overtime losses on home ice to Columbus because of ill-advised penalties and go into Game 3 on the road (7:30 p.m. EDT Tuesday, NBCSN) knowing it’s a problem that needs immediate fixing.

”We need to be a little smarter Mike White Jersey Cowboys ,” center Nicklas Backstrom said. ”We need to play with better discipline – especially when we have the lead twice. … It’s obviously going to hurt you in the playoffs. That’s the way it is. It’s just fact.”

Nine of the 14 regulation goals in the Washington-Columbus series have come on the power play. The Blue Jackets, who surged into the playoffs by not taking a lot of penalties to tax one of the worst special teams units in the league, lead the playoffs in penalty minutes per game.

Coach John Tortorella said the Blue Jackets ”have to cure that” because it’s too dangerous to keep taking so many penalties. His players know it even if they’re unsure of the standard.

”We need to stay out of the box, but you never know what’s a call and what’s not anymore,” forward Cam Atkinson said. ”But that’s the game right now.”

In the West, where Winnipeg leads Minnesota 2-1, the teams realize how tight things are being called.

The Wild took five penalties in the first 31 minutes Sunday night and stymied the Jets’ power play in a 6-2 comeback win. The teams combined for 19 penalties – including some fights and misconducts – in the second game of their series.

”We’ve just got to watch taking penalties,” Minnesota coach Bruce Boudreau said. ”Both teams were really emotional at the beginning and you’ve got to worry about taking penalties and getting behind the eight ball.”

It’s chippy between the Golden Knights and Kings Youth Barkevious Mingo Jersey , too, with Vegas up 3-0 going into Game 4 (10:30 p.m. EDT Tuesday, NBCSN) in Los Angeles. All three games so far have been decided by a goal, L.A. defenseman Drew Doughty was suspended for an illegal check to the head of William Carrier and Kings coach John Stevens is none too happy about a missed call on Vegas forward Erik Haula for hitting Anze Kopitar in the face with the butt end of his stick Sunday night .

”We get a guy suspended for making a hockey play, and he butt-ends one of the best players in the world in the face,” Stevens said. ”That’s an intent-to-injure play.”

COMEBACK KINGS?

Los Angeles is the most recent team to come back from a 3-0 series deficit, doing so in 2014 against the San Jose Sharks on the way to winning the Stanley Cup. Stevens, who was an assistant four years ago Cody Latimer Jersey Giants , said his team has ”had some resilience all year,” and the tightness of the games against Vegas combined with the excellence of goaltender Jonathan Quick certainly makes an turnaround possible.

INJURIES

The Jets lost Tyler Myers to a lower-body injury that coach Paul Maurice thought was avoidable, and the big defenseman’s status is uncertain going into Game 4 (8 p.m. EDT Tuesday, CNBC). Young Tucker Poolman could draw into the lineup in place of Myers if necessary.

The Capitals won’t have forward Andre Burakovsky for at least Games 3 and 4 in Columbus because of an upper-body injury. Coach Barry Trotz said Burakovsky is going to ”miss some time” after being crunched into the boards by Boone Jenner in Game 2. Speedy winger Jakub Vrana, a surprise scratch for Washington on Sunday, goes back in for Burakovsky.

WHO STARTS?

Trotz said he has decided who will start in goal for the Capitals in Game 3 but hadn’t yet told Braden Holtby and Philipp Grubauer. After Grubauer allowed eight goals on 49 shots before being yanked at the second intermission of Game 2, the smart money is on Holtby, the 2016 Vezina Trophy winner.

BARTON OUT

Linesman Steve Barton Kyle Lauletta Jersey Giants , who was injured when he inadvertently clipped skates with Blue Jackets forward Josh Anderson and had to be helped off the ice by trainers, dislocated his kneecap and tore a quadriceps muscle in his left leg. Barton will require surgery but didn’t tear ligaments in his knee, which doctors said is good news because they expect him to make a full recovery.

CHICAGO — Chicago Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky did not take long to understand the significance of his upcoming start against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday afternoon at Soldier Field.

It will mark the 196th meeting with Green Bay clinging to a 95-94-6 lead in the series.

“I’m starting to figure out it’s a pretty big deal Youth Courtland Sutton Jersey ,” said Trubisky, a rookie out of North Carolina who will make his fifth career start and first against Green Bay. “No matter who our opponent is, we’re trying to be 1-0 each week. But I know this is a big rivalry for the fans and the city of Chicago, so I’m just going to go out and give it everything I’ve got. Hopefully, we come out on the good side of it.”
Article continues below ...
That has not been the case in recent seasons for the Bears, who have dropped three games in a row, seven of eight and 13 of 15 to the Packers. But the development of Trubisky, coupled with the absence of Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers (broken collarbone) Mike Hughes Jersey Vikings , has brought new hope to the Windy City.

Chicago (3-5) has matched its win total from a season ago and has won two of its past three games. The Bears are 2-2 at home this season and are well-rested after a week off.

Meanwhile, Green Bay (4-4) is eager to change its narrative and reassert itself as a playoff contender. Since Rodgers went down, the Packers have lost three in a row and averaged only 14.7 points.

In place of Rodgers, Packers quarterback Brett Hundley has produced a lackluster 58.3 passer rating. He has passed for one touchdown and four interceptions.

Hundley, 24, is confident that he and his teammates on offense can improve. He leans on his own strengths instead of pressuring himself to replicate Rodgers’ style.

“When I’m out there, I’m myself,” Hundley said. “I never have and never will try to be Aaron Mike McGlinchey Jersey 49ers , but I learned from Aaron. But at the end of the day, I’m still me.”

Rodgers’ injury is not the only one for Green Bay. The Packers will be without safety Morgan Burnett (groin) and veteran tackle Bryan Bulaga (torn ACL), among others, when they head south to Chicago. The team also released injured tight end Martellus Bennett this week, which means Richard Rodgers and Lance Kendricks will need to carry the load going forward at that position.

For Green Bay’s slump to end, a trio of talented wideouts will need to step up when it matters most, wide receiver Randall Cobb said. He was referring to himself, Davante Adams and Jordy Nelson.

“I think it’s big plays Cheap Kyzir White Jersey ,” Cobb said. “We always talk about it in the receiver room. The team goes through us. When we’re able to make those big plays, it provides a spark for this team, not only offensively but throughout the entire team. … It’s on our shoulders. I’m putting it on the three of us.”

Chicago has the NFL’s eighth-ranked defense and will challenge the Packers’ hopes to rack up points. Bears defensive tackle Akiem Hicks leads the team with seven sacks, and Leonard Floyd has five.

Meanwhile, Green Bay is No. 23 in total offense with an average of 310.1 yards per game.

On the opposite side of the ball, the Bears rank fourth-to-last in total offense with 287.6 yards per game. Green Bay has struggled on defense, too, ranking No. 25 with 357.4 yards allowed per contest.

The Packers have scored 22.6 points per game while giving up an average of 23.9. Chicago has scored 16.8 points while giving up 21.4.

Injuries also will affect Chicago in the rivalry game. Tight end Zach Miller is out for the season after a frightening leg injury against New Orleans that required emergency surgery and a lengthy hospital stay. Linebacker Danny Trevathan also could miss the game because of a calf strain.

One player who expects to make his Bears debut is wide receiver Dontrelle Inman Youth Markus Wheaton Jersey , who was acquired Oct. 26 from the Los Angeles Chargers. Inman notched 58 catches for 810 yards and four touchdowns last season, and he dined with Trubisky before the off week to help the pair build chemistry.

JACKSONVILLE Arden Key Jersey Raiders , Fla. (AP) Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan felt the organization ”lacked football IQ” in previous years.

So Khan hired two-time Super Bowl-winning coach Tom Coughlin to handle all football-related decisions.

With Coughlin calling the shots, the Jaguars (10-6) made the postseason for the first time since 2007 and will host a playoff game for the first time since January 2000.
Article continues below ...
”It’s a structure that’s been unsuccessful in the past, but for me, what I felt we lacked was football IQ,” Khan said Thursday, three days before Jacksonville hosts Buffalo (9-7) in an AFC wild-card game. ”And you can’t just say, `Let me go to craigslist or Backpage.com and get some football IQ.’ You want somebody who really it’s not just a job, it’s a passion, emotion and a drive. Nobody really personifies that better than Tom Coughlin.”

Khan wasn’t sure how the front-office dynamic would work with Coughlin and new coach Doug Marrone joining carry-over general manager Dave Caldwell.

Coughlin and Marrone changed the culture almost overnight and improved the roster by signing the best free-agent class in franchise history.

”The norm is these things don’t work DaeSean Hamilton Jersey Broncos ,” Khan said. ”The short answer is: How do you get people together who are going to pull toward one goal, which is winning, and not be focused on, `Hey, is this right? Who gets the credit? Who gets the blame?’ This was the one time for us to really get that right.”

The Jaguars appear headed in the right direction, with a young and talented roster that appears built to be competitive for several years.

”I think it turned out better than probably, certainly, I thought it would,” Khan said. ”And really the credit is to (Coughlin). I can tell you he never asked for the 53-man roster. It was my idea Mike Remmers Jersey Vikings , `Tom, that means nothing changed. It’s maybe not good for Dave’s ego, but there has to be somebody in charge, and it needs to be you.'”

The biggest question entering the season was about quarterback Blake Bortles.

Jacksonville picked up the fifth-year option in his rookie deal, a decision that seemingly will keep Bortles under contract another year. He’s due to make $19 million in 2018.

The Jags made the move in May, after passing on available quarterbacks in free agency and in the draft.

”Maybe we’re not the biggest idiot on the football block,” Khan said. ”When his option was picked up, it was like, `What are these guys smoking?’ You’ve got to stay the course Malik Jefferson Jersey Elite , but yet you have to have the agility and the flexibility. You have to have both.

”The other thing with Blake is he’s really a nice guy. … He’s from the area, he’s a nice guy, he’s talented, he’s stayed healthy. He’s not a China doll. We are invested. We want him to be successful.”

Bortles completed 60 percent of his passes this season for 3,687 yards, with 21 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. His passer rating was up and his turnovers were down, and he did it without star receiver Allen Robinson. Bortles also had a running game that stalled late in the season and two rookie receivers playing in place of Robinson and Allen Hurns.

He said he managed to avoid thinking about the future by focusing on football.

”My goal is to play football in Jacksonville for as long as they let me, and in order to do that, we have to win football games Sam Hubbard Jersey Elite ,” Bortles said this week.

The biggest one in a decade comes Sunday at EverBank Field.

The Jaguars sold every ticket available with ease and even got permission from the NFL to remove tarps covering four sections in the upper deck to satisfy part of the demand.

”If one thing we have proven, it’s fans matter,” Khan said. ”They matter for us. We want them in the seats. … We want them showing up. We need the energy. If the Seattle and Houston games are example, it should be a notch up and it would be certainly (be) an incredible experience.”

Khan also said the Buffalo-Jacksonville game is the most expensive wild-card ticket on the secondary market. He said he saw Tennessee-Kansas City tickets available for $38, about $150 less than those for sale to see the Bills and Jaguars do something they haven’t done since 1999.

Buffalo in the playoffs for the first time since then and Jacksonville is hosting a playoff game for the first time since that same season.

”Could you imagine the hottest ticket in football is right here, selling for five, six times face value?” Khan said. ”Could you believe that happening in freaking Jacksonville?”

Down by one, the Bruins pulled Tuukka Rask and scored twice, Patrice Bergeron tying it with 51 seconds left in regulation and then winning it in OT.

That was five years ago and the Original Six rivals meet in the playoffs again for the first time since, playing Game 1 of their Eastern Conference series at TD Garden on Thursday night.

While Rask, Bergeron, Zdeno Chara and Brad Marchand are still leading Boston Rashaad Penny Jersey Seahawks , both of these teams are younger and faster and are each playing for a different coach.

“As a Leaf fan, it was tough,” Toronto’s Mitch Marner, 16 when his team lost to the Bruins in 2013, said.

“It was hard to deal with,” said Nazem Kadri, who made it 4-1 with 5:39 left in the third of that fateful game and is one of five Leafs still with the team.

“Nothing’s changed in terms of Boston being a resilient group. They’ve got some veteran guys over there that have some serious experience.

“It’s going to take all we’ve got Youth Jordan Akins Jersey , but we’re up for the challenge.”

The Maple Leafs finished third in the Atlantic Division, their 49-26-7 record leaving them seven points behind the second-place Bruins, who missed the chance to win the division and the top seed in the Eastern Conference with a loss to the Florida Panthers on Sunday night.

The injury-plagued Bruins went 1-3-1 over the last five games.

“We won 50 games, and I think the body of work speaks that this team deserves to be where we are, and we focus on Thursday night,” said Bruins general manager Don Sweeney.

Toronto won three of the four games between the teams during the regular season, one of them in overtime.

He is 16-7-2 with a 2.14 GAA and .925 save percentage in the regular season against the Leafs and also went 4-3 against them in those playoffs.

Amid theories he was overused, Maple Leafs netminder Fredrick Andersen struggled with an .884 save percentage in March but then won twice in April. He has also owned the Bruins throughout his career with Anaheim and Toronto, going 10-1-0 with a 2.09 GAA and .935 save percentage against Boston.

He won 38 games and pitched five shutouts (Rask had three) during the regular season and is 19-13 with a 2.41 GAA and .915 save percentage lifetime in the playoffs. Andersen lost twice in Game 7s that would have sent the Ducks to the finals.

“If you lose a game or let in a goal … you’ve got to have a short memory and be able to get back on track and just do what you try every time there’s a puck in your end,” Andersen said Monday. “Just try to make a save. You can’t dwell on anything. Just make the next one.

“We’ve been growing as a team through the year. It’s going to be exciting.”

The Bruins appear to be healthier than they have been in a month — so healthy that rookie Ryan Donato, signed late and an offensive factor for the team down the stretch, is slated to be a healthy scratch for Game 1.
