1  Parents' Lounge / Coffee Corner - General Chat / Re: Halloween ideas.. on: September 23, 2009, 07:28:20 AM
My family never really had a lot of money, so when I was a child my mom made our costumes. She had some of the most excellent ideas. I remember of course being a fairy princess. I had also been a unicorn made from a cardboard box, as well as many other fancifull things. My younger sister was a bunch of grapes made from purple balloons one year.
I have bought costumes for my son who is now 11 years old. One he liked the most though, was a skeleton costume I painted on all black sweat pants and shirt while I was studying the bones for massage therapy. I passed the bones test BTW.
This year he wants to make his own. I'm gathering the materials for him, but I'm not really sure what he means when he says he's making a warlock ninja with a skeletal mask  LOL .
The true point here is...I did that skeleton costume because it had something to do with a part of my every day life at that time. Some of the BEST and most original ideas come upon us in that way.
2  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Fun questions kids asks.... on: August 21, 2009, 07:21:46 PM
I was saying that their loss of interest in asking questions would be a good thing. But simply that they would listen only for soo long if you were to give them a long lecture. In either case the point was that it's better to tell them what you know for fact rather than lieing and saying something like "the sky is a mirror and reflecting the blue of the ocean".
If you know that the blue is the color we see after refration of light off of gasses in the atmosphere then say so. If they child becomes disinterested in the longer version it IS better then believing Mom or Dad knows all when they haven't a clue. I wasn't saying bore your kids to tears so they stop asking questions.
Oh by the way, I looked up a website FAQkids.com that has the answers to tons of questions like this just for kids. Even if they don't have the answer, type the question into the search bar, someone is bound to know the answer.
If you make using the internet a habit to answer your kids question you need help with, it teaches your kids that looking for the right answer is better then never finding out, or worse being lied to.
3  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Making your own Baby Formula on: August 21, 2009, 07:22:51 AM
About goat's milk. I was alergic to everything soon after birth. Gassy, colic, cranky.  No breast feeding even though my mom had plenty. At that time there wasn't formula for a case like mine. My mom had to feed me goats milk formula. It was the only thing I could eat and it worked wonderfully. I quickly gained weight, and stoped having digestive problems.
I'm not sure I would ever use anything else other than goats milk formula if my babies ever needed a supliment or replacement to breast milk. But I'm the old fashioned kind.
If I knew people who'd made their own formula using the ingredients from that link I may be inclined to try it, but as of yet I still feel that tried and true is best.

By the way, I had slow developing kindeys till adulthood. As a child I wet the bed. Perhaps it can be atributed to having been on goats milk formula. I have no problems now even after 3 kids  LOL
4  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Fun questions kids asks.... on: August 21, 2009, 07:03:46 AM
My son used to ask all of the stumpers!! Too bad I can't remember them.  I can answer some of them, but not so that a child can understand.  Sad  It's hard to explain something complicated when you must explain the explination.
If your shild asked the questions just give them the best answer you can. So they lose interest after (Why is the sky blue?) turns into a 15 minute lecture. Their loss of interest is better than you lieing to them and telling them the first thing that comes to mind. If you are close to a computer with the internet just look up the answer.
My favorite one was always...If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?
5  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Is having a second child important? on: August 21, 2009, 06:41:10 AM
I'm with the majority here. I come from a family of all girls, 4 of us total. I have 3 of my own. My eldest (boy) is a pre-teen now and had grown up as an only child untill his father remarried. He gained a younger brother. He never really wanted a younger sibling, kept asking for an older brother ( don't know I woulda pulled that one off).
My younger two (girls) are 16 months apart and both under two years old. Who knows how they will feel about each other as they grow older together. The first girl loves her baby sister but sometimes it's hard to tell as the amount of time taken for breast feeding the youngest caused some jellousy. My mom had the same problem with my older sister when I was a baby and we were 3 years apart. This is just an example of why you shouldn't feel you have to wait till your first childs older to have a second child for the sake of the first. They will feel jellousy no matter how old they are.
My older sister and I fought all the time while growing up. But it wasn't till a few years ago that we talked and came to an understanding with each other. We are like best friends today. She finds fault in everything mom did and I see only how hard my mom tried to be both parents in one for us. Incidently, mom did an awesome job. Even my older sister has to admit she taught us to be loving mothers, and successfull, hardworking women.

You can make the only child to be just as loving, successfull and social as any child with siblings. Just introduce new faces frequently while they are babies, and make a friend who has kids to play with while you hang out. My son was socialized, confident, and generous all along. He didn't need siblings to design these traits/skills.

Good luck and know you will make the right choice for you and your child either way.

6  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: it so difficult for me to brush my little one teeth on: August 07, 2009, 09:19:31 PM
I just wanteed to give a rundown of how I started my middle child brushing. She is 19 months now and brushes her own teeth as well as her age allows.
As soon as she got her first tooth in I handed her a childs tooth brush. Nothing fancy, just a regular bristle brush. I let her chew on it. We made faces brushing our teeth together in the mirror. Eventually she wanted to brush my teeth and I'd let her use my tooth brush to do mine while I did hers.
Of course there are always going to be those little rough spots, but if you stick with it and don't let your child turn away for too long you'll get through it.
We didn't just make it a game. It was part of a routine. Babies love routines remember. Bath, (tickle) towel dry off, brushing teeth, brush hair, Q-tip clean ears, "Oh pretty girl! Lets go show Daddy how pretty."  big grin
Now she knows the routine and is ready and willing to go to the next step. Gotta get to that Daddy love at te end.  LOL
