BrillKids Software / Little Math - General Discussion / Re: Should I bother with LM at 21m?

Hi there, My daughter is 22 months, and she's doesn't like to sit and watch LM or LR either. So I just play it in the background so at least she can hear it even though she isn't looking at it. She totally ignores LM and prefers it over LR. At the moment, I put LM on when she sits on the potty, and she sometimes watches it then. She has started to develop her own personality and says "no!" whenever I put it on. She takes out her other DVDs but I try and insist on it and just play it. It was so much easier when she was younger, and just watched it whenever I put it on. But I do think LR is the best thing ever, and has really helped her to develop her speech and language. She has started to say 4 word sentences like, "tiger sleeping in Zoo", "tiger wake up now", "mummy sit down here" and most other 2 year olds aren't even saying sentences yet. I often get parents saying to me, "wow, she's talking loads! how old is she?" and they can't even believe she's not even 2 yet. Anyway, I think you should just carry on with it. Its never too late. They may pick it back up again later. Linda PS when I was talking to a speech and language teacher, she told me that a child needs to hear a word at least 50 times before they understand it or say it.... well that's why LR is so good, we just need to 'click' it and it repeats it... can you imagine saying a word 50+ times

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Teaching multiple languages you don't know

I don't really have a set time or schedule, but I guess it would be good if you had one and then they know when to expect it.
I play foreign nursery rhymes CDs, read foreign baby books, watch 'Youtube' videos and talk to her in the foreign language.
When we go out, I point out object and say them in the foreign language.
Also, we have Little Math, which allows us to import foreign languages, so I play the numbers in French, Chinese, Japanese and English. Its great because they are listening to the numbers in different languages and they don't even realise they are learning to count!
I can't wait for the Little French to come out and will definitely think it will be worth it for my little one to learn her vocabulary.
Hope this helps.

Wow, that's amazing!
I do believe that exposing multiple languages (in all different formats i.e books, cds, tv music etc) is great for your little one.
I speak English, Cantonese (and sometimes French) to my little girl since she was born and my partner speaks Hebrew.
She is now 15 months and has shown signs that she understands all four languages. I often test her and ask her ' where the duck is? Ou est la balle etc etc and she would point to the object. My partner regularly sings to her in Hebrew (along with a Hebrew nursery rhyme CD) and one night, I put it on before bedtime and she started to point to her nose and head. I asked my partner the next day about the CD, and he told me that it was the equivalent to 'Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes'.
I really felt proud!
So, I think its great to expose babies to different languages, and anyway, what harm can it do? As long as it is fun for them and they don't feel like its forced learning, I would embrace it.

Local Support Groups / England / Play dates in Central London
|
on: October 22, 2010, 02:54:11 PM

Hi there,
I'm a stay at home mum and would love to set up play dates with any mums with kids under 3. I live near the Barbican so its pretty central. The Barbican Centre is just a few minutes walk away, and there are loads of nice parks nearby.
I've got a 14 month old daughter who loves to play, run around in the park and do what all the other kids do...
She loves Little Reader and I am just learning to personalise some of the lessons.
She listens to Little Maths, but doesn't really look at the screen much.
Any tips on how to engage her?
Thanks
Linda

I use my laptop and we usually do Little Reader in the morning and Little Maths in the evening, usually after she has eaten, then she gets into a routine and knows when to expect it. Sometimes I'll just take out my laptop to do some work and she'll think its 'Brillbaby' time and raise her hands and make a 'ahhhh' sound, its so cute.

RE: breast pump: I used the single Avent electric pump which I thought was good but the motor bit was a little heavy which you put on top of the bottle and it wasn't very good when you had to leave it so you could stand the bottle alone, it comes with a extra bit which you stand the bottle on, but its so short that the bottle just topples over so you have to hold it or take the top bit off. Its definately worth getting an electric breastpump but I don't think the Avent one is that good, it also leaks a little too. RE: baby carrier: I have the bjorn air, which is light and great for out and about but if you are looking for back support that I suggest the Ergo. http://www.first-time-mums.com/ go to articles and read about baby carriers. hope this helps Linda

Hi, I'm quite new to the site. My daughter was about 4 months when I first started putting the 'black and white' infant stimulation pictures in front of her and she just stares at them and thats what prompted me to find more things from the site. Since then, I've found so many more interesting things that has captured her attention, particularly all the free downloads in different languages. We've also just startd the 'Little Reader' and 'Little Math'. I think she prefers the maths to the Reader though....don't know why.... maybe someone can explain Linda and Little Imogen

Wow, I really like the 'mail box' one, I think kids would enjoy that one because, they love surprises and waking up to see what's in the mail box. Will try that one with my nephew, at least it will give him something to look forward to... and maybe add a Thomas The Tank Engine sticker or a toy or something to give him more of an incentive. Thanks
