Expert?  The only experts are the children...in fact, being a child is natural...being a parent is not.  I wish you the best...your topic line really caught my eye and thought I'd throw in a comment...hope you don't mind.  :-)

Okay...so here are two ideas I would consider:

1- glue a loop of an elastic band on one side of the lid.  Do this to at least 4 lids, do 8 if you want to have a set too....Then show him how to put them on a middle finger and a thumb on each hand and tap them together to make a sound....like little finger musical symbols.  You could do this to help him with his fine motor skills between tapping each finger to the thumb while teaching him what each finger is called.....sounds fun to me!  how cute if he had one on each finger....

2 - print a headshot of picture of each person in your family affix it to one side of the lid and write clearly (white background w/ red or black ink) the name of that person in your family.  then put them with words up on a table or floor and ask them to find "mom"  .... this will teach him to search for "mom" ......I'd start with just a few pictures at first......be sure to include a picture of him and write his name out rather than using "b-a-b-y"

With left over lids you could share the same ideas with some friends or neighbors :-)

Hmmm...is it too late to give you ideas on this....I agree with you - there's something more to it.....have you already decided or can I have another week to come up with something?

We've used Leap Frog Letter factory and I agree that it's a matter of figuring out how to make the sound.  He knows what the sound R is...but can't seem to duplicate it... I need to figure out a way to teach him how to place the tongue in the mouth correctly for that sound.  Hmmmm.....

He's been a little behind schedule on pronouncing some sounds....but this one is still pretty tough for him....I'm not going to push him but thought I'd ask all you wonderful parents out there if anybody had some great tips on teaching the child how to pronounce his "R's"....the closest we've come to it is when I tell him to growl like a bear....GRRRRrr....but he still favors the "W" sound.

Have you considered adoption?  I'm now 44 with a 5 year old and WANTING another one ... but I thing the whole baby thing would kill me.......I'm starting to think about adopting because it would bless the other child, ease my mind on having a child with special needs,  avoid the baby stuff and complete our family......I"m not sure when but adoption is still something we are considering and praying about.

My boy turned three in April and he can do everything except hold still.....

I've been doing flashcards off and on since he was ???  hmmm.... can't really remember when....feels like years but probably only about one year.

He is so active that I've started incorporating activity with learning.  For example, when we play ball, I'll show a flashcard right before it's my turn to throw the ball back to him.

I have realized that his little brain is like an undeveloped roll of film and even the slightest little ray of light (bit of data) stays in there.

We don't use foul language in our home but for some reason I really get a giggle watching Chef Gordan Ramsey's show, "He**'s Kitchen."  Have you heard of it?

If not, he's a wonderful chef but uses some very colorful language (and with a British accent!)
