Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Parent confuse

hi everyone, I've been a fan of early learning and child development. I know for one that to do this, it is very costly. This is why I believe an early learning and child development is somewhat a priveledge. For a fact that not all parents/adults support this kind of upbringing to kids. My case is this, I've purchased brillkids LM & LR... and now that my son is 19months, I've noticed he is a little advance in his age. I'm into second quarter of LR and almost finished with the 1st quarter of LM and in the idea of my son is really thirsty of much more knowledge. I found an educational toy here in Philippines which is really costly... LOGICO from Groliers (Educational Insights). I'm thinking of purchasing it but almost everyone is against it including husband dear and mother dear. My brother who supports me 100% says I should buy it since I have resource and I have to take advantage of the spongelike learning of my son. And on the otherhand,,, others oppose saying my son will just throw and ignore it, I shouldn't be rushing on my kids learning and development etc...
Any advice here please?? If anyone has these toy too, how did it help, give me your reviews too? I really want this for my son and know he'll love it as he loves learning..

Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: boys 'slower' than girls?
|
on: June 16, 2010, 05:28:55 AM

I do not believe boys are slower than girls.... I think it generally depends on the kid itself. Each kid is different. I have a son, now 13 months. He was walking without any guidance when he's 11 months. He's talking some words now such as: daddy, mommy, yum yum, ball, tita (auntie in our language) and all other stuff. Whereas an officemate of mine with same age as my son only she's a she... doesn't even crawl, walk or talk. And another, girl who'se around 21months doesn't talk any words but only mumbles, she's perfectly normal though.
However not to praise milestones of my son, my brother was a late bloomer compared to me and my sister. So really, it all depends on the person. Each one of us is unique in some ways.

Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: How to Help my Son Be a Little Taller

seanhendrick,,, i agree with you.. i'm also one of the parents who wants their babies to be a little taller... I'm a little petite and had experience highs and ups in my childhood. now that there are wonder medicines but of corz i want those without bad side effects, i also use it with my baby who's about to be 1 year old. in my home country, it is well known to use CHERIFER or GROWEE multivitamins. try googling it and see how much it costs and its effects. i live abroad and to purchase this on the net is too much pricey for me so everytime i go home i buy lots.. although there has not enough proof from any scientific studies that supports the positive effect on growth of these vitamins, I still use it as well as most of my friends and compatriots. well,,,, i do it since i know no bad side effects.

Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Mickey Mouse Club House Theme Party
|
on: April 06, 2010, 06:24:45 AM
|
My DD will turn a year old in May and we are starting to plan his first birthday. We decided to go for a Mickey mouse Clubhouse Party. I have lots of ideas but somehow jumbled where to begin. We have reserved a party hall because our house is no way big enough to hold our guests.
Any ideas on games? I was thinking of costume party for adults specially for kids but I don't know if it will be a hit. How do I put everyone into dressing up to the theme?
I've never planned a birthday before and we really want to make it special because firstly, my husband and I never experienced it.

karma to you hypatia for your honest opinion...
We sometimes play the YBCR/LR/LM in our laptop and the NO TV means I would prefer no distractions by all means specifically an ON television. NO TV for us is practically impossible most of the time as husband dear is into sports channels. In the meantime, he brings his work at home and since we live in a small place where limited access to a "silent" space is almost impossible to get. And when we used tv with YBCR/LR/LM (you know all the hastles of wiring tv from a laptop) I'm encouraging my sitter and husband dear to have an interaction whenever YBCR/LR/LM is played on tv.
With YBCR, i actually don't know how many times it should be watched? And now I'm on a project to gather as much nursery Rhyme videos to substitute some YBCR viewing. But but I guess it is the same sort of since it will be viewed using tv. Another is I'm making printout of the nursery rhymes and kid's stories and laminate later on then bind giving a "book" look thing.
The pointing to posters is a nice idea. I just have to figure out where to post it on our small spaced home.
PS: not a brasilian.. I'm also SE-Asian.
to the others, comments please! your opinions are most valued to how I improve.

Congrats to you. Not a good job but a GREAT job indeed! So how did you manage to do it??? How long have you started Doman Method? Do you have a particular schedule?? I'm gathering all my materials for the Doman Method so we could start our lessons on 1st of April. My baby is almost 11 months old and hoping also by 18 months, he could read too.
This is inspiring me!

After reading this thread... I'm so so so inspired on giving my Albert weekly goals. So after a whole lot of reading from this forum and other early learning sites.. I come up with my baby's schedule. Please feel free to comment on it. Is it too much of an 11-month old boy??? I did this so that my cousin who's sitting him could follow a guide where she'll put check marks on accomplished activities. Since I'm working mom, I hope this will help me track of his activities and development.
Thanks to Krista G's blog for some insightful activities I did write and just hope we can follow it..
Again,,, I need some opinions on it so I can improve it.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Albert's milestone in 2 weeks of LR

definitely a great feeling... but nowadays seems he prefer YBCR than LR... is that normal? I've presented LR for about a month and when I introduced YBCR, he continuous to progress and as soon as 2 viewing,,, he knows how to raise his hands.... but but he moves away when I show him LR... any advice if I should continue it? Also, I've prepared a 100 flashcards and seems that he moves away like when he watches LR... I'm kind a loosing my patience in teaching.. I hope I'd stick....
I just finished Doman's Reading and Math books and thinks of making a schedule that the sitter would follow... Will that be alright???
