EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: my child won't look at the dots

To Michjas how do you insert pictures of your family etc in between LM slides?
I am not using LM slides, I created my own powerpoint slides but I also got some from the brill kids forum ie go to free downloads and powerpoint slideshows and search for dots, this will give you slides with dots. I then inserted slides into the middle of these slideshows and inserted my photos that are on my computer, or you can use clipart and put in funny photos, anything to keep them looking at the screen and he will pick up the dots in between all the fun photos or pictures. I also done this with words. Let me know if you need any further information.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / my child won't look at the dots

Hi, I have been teaching my child to read and now I am starting maths with doman's method of dots. My son looked at them a few times but now won't look at all and when I say, let's look at the dots he will look everywhere but, even with all the distractions taken away, he has even stopped wanting to read the words even though they are new to him. Any ideas?

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / what now after words
|

Hi, I have been showing my baby words for some time now and he knows quite a few, do I keep adding more words or how do I go about starting books with him, what I have been teaching him to read to date has been nouns and verbs. I haven't taught him the words: I, we, are, is, at, on etc etc. What do I do next? He can say some of the words but uses baby sign language for the rest.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: how many flash cards a day should you show when you start

OK SINCE I LAST POSTED I HAVE HAD GREAT SUCCESS. OUR STORY SO FAR. I STARTED SHOWING MY BABY WORDS AT ABOUT 7 MONTHS USING MY BABY CAN READ CARDS, PICTURES, BOOKS AND VIDEOS. HE KEPT GRABBING THE CARDS AND BENDING THEM BUT I KEPT GOING BUT HE ONLY REALLY RECOGNISED TIGER, THEN I NOTICED HE MAY KNOW SOME OF THE WORDS IN THE BOOK BUT I DIDN'T KNOW WHERE TO GO FROM HERE BECAUSE NOTHING WAS HAPPENING, ABOUT 2 MONTHS AGO I DECIDED TO TRY THE DOMAN METHOD AND JUST SHOW HIM ONE WORD AT THE START AND GRADUALLY AS HE KNEW THEM ADD NEW WORDS. THIS REALLY DID NOT WORK BECAUSE HE THOUGHT ALL THE WORDS WERE THE FIRST WORD MUMMY. SO AS ADVISED BY A MUM ON THIS SITE TO SHOW PICTURES WITH THE WORDS I WENT BACK TO THE 'YOUR BABY CAN READ' CARDS. HE IS NOW 20 MONTHS OLD AND I HAVE BEEN SHOWING HIM ABOUT 20 WORDS AND PICTURES AND AFTER ONE DAY HE KNEW A WORD, EVERY DAY SINCE HE KNOWS ANOTHER WORD, HE KNOWS ABOUT 12 NOW AND I SUSPECT MORE, FOR THE WORDS HE CAN'T SAY WE USE SIGN LANGUAGE LIKE BRRMM BRRM FOR CAR, OOH OOH FOR CHIMPANZEE, CLAPPING FOR CLAP, POINTING TO EYES FOR EYES ETC AND HE CAN SAY LOTS AND SAYING NEW WORDS EVERY DAY. FOR THE PERSON WHOSE BABY ISN'T SAYING THE WORDS HE MAY NOT BE READY TO SAY THE WORDS SO GIVE HIM A DIFFERENT OPTION IE A SOUND OR POINTING AT THE BODY PART ETC. HE WILL FIND THIS EASIER AND HE WILL ONLY IGNORE YOU IF YOU PERSIST ON TRYING TO MAKE HIM SAY THE WORD. GOOD LUCK AND LET ME KNOW HOW YOU GET ON.

hi, i am just starting this system. So I wanted to know how many flash cards per day to show and how many times.
HI, I AM TRYING TO TEACH MY BABY TO READ AND AM USING THE DOMAN METHOD WHICH SAYS THAT YOU SHOULD SHOW THE WORD MUMMY FIRST AND WHEN BABY KNOWS THAT MOVE ON TO DADDY AND THEN HAND, FOOT, KNEE ETC. MY PROBLEM IS THAT WHEN I TAUGHT MY BABY MUMMY, EVERY CARD AFTER THAT HE SAID MUMMY. SO WHEN HE SEES ANY CARD HE SAYS MUMMY. HOW DO I FIX THIS? HE IS 19 MONTHS AND I HAVE BEEN SHOWING HIM VARIOUS WORDS BEFORE I TRIED THE DOMAN METHOD BUT HE COULDN'T TALK THEN.

yes if baby gets lots of time on belly on the floor he will eventually crawl, maybe belly sliding first and then crawling, but with the crawling i found the carpet really helps, it's patience us mums need, it will all happen in their time.

Well since my last entry baby is now crawling on hands and knees but only to get to somewhere so that he can pull himself up and walk around holding on. I found that if he is continually on the floor he will just do it when he is ready. He was on belly going backwards first, then around in a circle, then forwards on belly for a long time. I have no carpet so I brought my rug into the kitchenette and because he couldnt slide along well on it it forced him to lift his belly up, so anyone with carpet is at an advantage.
But hooray at last he is on his hands and knees and he will copy us if we are on our hands and knees. Anyone out there waiting for their baby to do this my advice is, give time and opportunity and carpet and it will come.
Next step walking and going for slow walks in the park.

Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Glen Doman

I first heard of Glen Doman when I was looking for help for my 10 year old. Following reading his material I realised that my daughter had a brain injury. She has moderate learning and social problems, physical inaptness and various other problems and we accept she received brain injury during the birth as her oxygen levels went down and an emergency csection was required, we have only recently realised that this was caused by her traumatic birth.
I have been doing primary movement including crawling with her and I can't see any improvement although her tutor has said she has now got rid of all her relexes. If you don't know about primary movement don't worry, it is similar to pattern exercises. We have since done some table pattern exercises to no improvement although I know I need to go on a course at the institute in order to be able to evaluate her properly and know if the exercises are helping her. Because we have seen no improvement she and I are fed up doing them.
I have tried getting help from the IAHP to no avail and I am worried about spending $1000 plus travel to go to the, how to help your brain injured child course, that may be of no benefit to my daughter and maybe have no support after the course.
If you know about anybody who has done the course and had success from it, please let me know.
Any comments would be great.

I would recommend NOT to offer any help to a baby with walking. If the baby is not walking on his own yet, he would have to try crawling to get him where he wants.. I may force him to try crawling a bit more efficiently (or start walking on his own). I would encourage to do so by crawling correctly by myself....
my baby is now walking around the furniture with no help and not falling much, if he has to go somewhere he crawls on his belly anywhere, all over the house, he has been crawling on belly very fast for months, what does crawling more efficiently mean? I tried physically putting him on his knees and holding his belly up a little bit for him but he just flops onto his belly again, if he was pattern crawling on his belly I think it wouldn't be so bad because it is similar to pattern crawling on hands and knees but he is sliding his belly and kicking out his legs a bit like swimming. I have also got on the floor and showed him how to do and so have my other children. Any more help on this subject would be appreciated.

hi, I realise that crawling helps babies as I have read all the Glen Doman books so I have been trying to get my baby to crawl on hands and knees. He has been crawling on his belly for 4 months, he is 10 months now and pulling himself up and walking a bit with help but I really want him to crawl on hands and knees and he is making no sign of it. How can I help him to do this?
