EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Combining Doman & LR
|
on: January 13, 2012, 08:47:47 PM
|
Hi there,
I've been showing my 15 month old daughter single word flashcards since she was about 6 months old, but never progressed to couplets, sentences, etc. I am finally ready to do more of a program, and I like Little Reader, but I also like Doman's suggestion of doing a lot of sessions throughout the day. Has anyone done both programs at the same time? Would this be beneficial, or redundant?

EARLY LEARNING / Parents of Children with Special Needs / Flashcards + Sign language?

My 15 month daughter has really been picking up the sign language lately, and I'd like to integrate it with the flashcards somehow. Would you add in a sign during a flashcard session,? If so it would be word, picture, sign then word. Or do you think that will detract from the fast flash method?

THANK YOU! for bringing this up! I have seen the video on the website a couple of times in the last few weeks and felt very encouraged by it, but frustrated at not knowing what contributed to Ana Carolina's impressive abilities. I've put CHIDLREN OF DREAMS, CHIDLREN OF HOPE on hold at our local library and will be reading it ASAP!

I'm interested in doing this, but not sure how...my daughter is 9 months old and not yet crawling. She does love to be in the pool, but does not use a cross pattern when she "swims" and I don't know how I could encourage it at her age. What activities would you folks try to encourage the cross patterning for non-mobile babies?

Yes, I think using the words in sentences is great and I'm trying to figure out how to move into that step. We've done about 60 words so far, and I know the next step in Doman's book is 2 word phrases but she seems so young to start that. Would you all stick to words only for an 8 month old, or start working on phrases? And if you would, HOW?

That makes a lot of sense. I think I will just make text cards for things she is familiar with, she's only 7.5 months old and not mobile, so she seems to enjoy the flashcards even without pictures. Then if its a word she won't have a meaning for, I'll try to find a picture. I think this will help me get ahead in making cards, which will make me more motivated to make more! Great advice, thank you!!

EARLY LEARNING / Parents of Children with Special Needs / How important are pictures?

I read Glen Doman's Teach Your Baby To Read, and I am trying to use that method of homemade flash cards. I like the idea for any child, but especially for my daughter since I've read that kids with Down Syndrome tend to be visual learners. I am hoping the flashcards will increase her spoken vocabulary as well as give her a head start on reading.
We don't have a color printer so I've been printing pictures at the library, then pasting them onto the cards and honestly, its too much work. Do you think the photos are necessary? Would I be ok with text only flash cards?

I am a first time mom to a delightful little girl, who is almost 8 months old. She loves water, our ficus tree and two dogs, singing and snuggling. She has Trisomy 21 and we've been lucky enough to avoid most related health concerns so far. I've made up a few Doman style flash cards, but with pictures on the back, and I want to keep doing more educational activities, but I am easily overwhelmed by the vast variety of activities and programs available. I welcome any mentorship!

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Ted Talks video
|
on: April 03, 2011, 01:52:14 AM

I just watched this Ted Talks video about linguistic development in babies. At one point the speaker mentions a study comparing comprehension rates between infants who heard a second language presented by a person, a video of a person and just the audio of the person. The infants who saw the speaker in person scored A LOT higher than the other two groups. What do you think this means for using computer programs like Little Reader and the flash method? I am currently trying to decide whether to use paper cards or a computer program, and I see the benefits of both. http://www.ted.com/talks/patricia_kuhl_the_linguistic_genius_of_babies.html

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Card size for 6 mo
|
on: April 02, 2011, 11:33:29 PM

I am just getting started with a reading program for my daughter. After making about 50 cards on card stock(4.5"x11") I read Glenn Doman's book and realized my cards are too small. How important do you think the size is at this age? I am really not excited to buy so much posterboard and have to cut it all down to size if I'm really going to be making hundreds of these cards over the next year....
