1  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Timing questions on: November 10, 2016, 08:01:51 PM
You "should" wait between sessions but I would find that life got in the way and then I would never get back to what I was doing with my wee one. So I would set aside time in the morning and then find time again in the afternoon to specifically do flash cards or EL sessions. In each I would do reading, maths & music. I never did achieve 6 sessions/ day of doman dots... I ended up doing as many as I could fit into the baby's interest period blush I like the sit down times but it was easier to just include EL throughout your day and make whatever you are doing an learning opportunity. E.g. We have a map tablecloth and my 2 year old thinks it's really funny that she has her lunch at the north pole with the polar bears whereas her brother is way down in Antartica with the penguins:-)

Whatever works for you, as long as you are exposing your child to knowledge they will learn despite any mistakes you might make.  smile
Hope it's going well for you,
2  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Learning two languages within the same language family. on: January 26, 2016, 05:12:50 AM
So I can't speak for English & Dutch but we have introduced multiple languages with success & perhaps that will encourage you.

We speak English (& Scots!) but live in a Spanish country & we taught our now 5 yo son both from birth. He switches easily between them, reads both fluently, Grade 1/2 level. He never has had a problem recognising which language is which. I think you would do your son a bigger disadvantage NOT to introduce another language early than to wait till later, just in the sense that you are missing that wonderful window when they don't so much learn as absorb. Our 2 year old sometimes makes up her sentences with a bit of both but that will sort itself out soon enough. A small price to pay for eventually being eloquent in 2 languages!

My son never showed me he could read as a baby, he spoke the language long before he could read it but the investment early on was well worth it. I think if you introduce it early enough they are familiar with the similarities & differences between languages long before you give them credit for it.

In addition we introduced French early on & now do Latin & greek a few times a week as well without any problem/ confusion for our son. In fact he loves seeing the root word connections between the languages.

Hope this helps
Lois

Saludos
Lois
4  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Music / Re: problem with clapping on: January 08, 2016, 03:50:17 AM
Thanks Kezia, thorough instructions as always. My 2yo little girl misses the figure but we can live with it:-)
5  BEYOND EARLY LEARNING (for older years) / Mathematics / Re: Early math to homeschool math on: December 11, 2015, 05:15:20 PM
I came on here looking for this piece of encouragement:-) I have a 5 year old boy, great at languages, loves music & science, brilliant recall of interesting facts (that he also understands)... then there is maths... logical lovely maths (to me)... It's almost funny the contrast. We didn't do too much in the early years compared to languages & music but a fair bit of marshmallow maths, maths songs, stories & poems... But the application of that??!! He's so sweet, he often answers wrongly then says no that's not it, & corrects himself (which is encouraging:-)).

We have moved onto Maths-u-see, he likes the manipulatives but we need to have no distractions for the 5-10 mins it takes per worksheet otherwise we get nowhere. Of course he is still further ahead in maths than he would be in a mainstream school but it's not as fast as I would like haha. They are so different, but still so great!! yes

7  BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Re: Do the Brill Kids programs work with Windows 10? on: October 09, 2015, 01:04:51 AM
Hi Lappy, I did this but there are one or two videos that still don't work. I've noticed mainly in the percussion section of videos.
8  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Music / Re: I am designing a finger guide for the violin, any suggestions? on: October 09, 2015, 01:03:23 AM
Hi Skippy, your email address bounced back to me. I sent you a personal message on here. Thanks
9  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Music / Re: I am designing a finger guide for the violin, any suggestions? on: October 01, 2015, 04:57:38 AM
Skippy, are your books available to buy online? I'm a cellist teaching my 4 year old son to play the violin after a fashion... we are a long way from any violin teachers where we live... Online would of course be an option but not yet. So always on the look out for different resources. Thanks!

12  Parents' Lounge / Introduce Yourself / Re: Hi from Uk on: February 14, 2015, 04:31:23 AM
Hi, I'm from the north east of Scotland, although I live abroad now. Whereabouts in the UK are you? I have a 4 year old son & I have a little girl about the same age as yours.

You are doing really well with all the exposure you are providing, the fact you are doing anything, means that you are doing it right. When you begin to see the amazing results you will know for sure, but that might be a long ways away, keep going! It's hard not to compare with other babies, my little girl doesn't say too much yet either, although still manages to be quite opinionated haha. We constantly talk to her so it will come.

One thing you didn't mention that you might like to look into is sign language for hearing babies. You will be amazed (I use "amazing" a lot about EL) about how much they can communicate... there are several threads covering this topic. A lot less stress on their part to explain what they want & it even helped with potty training. I wanted to follow BSL rather than ASL (which has way more baby focused resources) so I used "Baby Sign", they have a great little signing dictionary app that I still use.  There are a couple of other groups that do it too in the UK so maybe there would be one close to where you are. There are also some new BSL videos on youtube (they weren't there when I taught my son to sign 3+ years ago!) that I just came across last week when I was searching for the sign for rhino smile

You will enjoy this forum & love the ideas it provides to interact with your little one, take care
Lois

Hi Evelyn, lots of us just happened upon this site & are so glad we did! EL is a fabulous key to a bright future. Have fun!

Great resource, thanks! We liked the first set best; el mono silabo...
15  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: No brainer solution to teaching a language you don't know? on: January 13, 2015, 04:45:00 AM
Hi, I don't have all the answers for Mandarin resources but I can encourage you a little! It takes a bit of organisation on my part to get foreign languages factored in each day but it is well worth it & slowly but surely you will see results.

We are bilingual (Eng & Spanish) & introduced French as our 3rd language  -
Little Reader French: so far this has been our biggest expense, so not too bad
Youtube cartoons (Petit Ours Brun, Oui Oui, Sam le pompier), songs  & clips (numbers/ days of the week/ months etc). Any cartoons that my son (age 4) gets to watch are always in French. He thinks it's such a treat to get to watch something that he doesn't care which language it is in Wink
Librivox (free) have some audiobooks (books in the public domain) in French. Max et Mathilde series comes with CDs, & I have a French encyclopaedia with a CD that is useful.
International children's digital library (ICDL - free) has loads of books translated in & from many languages. On occasion you will be find that a book has an audio version there too.
We have a French Alliance chapter in the city which I hope to make good use of in the future.

4th language for us is a local indigenous language, Kuna. This we learn by having a native speaker in our home for several hours a week. I think this is the ideal way to learn a language. But... for the one we picked it's a little slow going (for me probably more so than my wee boy) since there aren't too many resources, written or otherwise, to augment our study.

Then we are starting Greek. I plan on following a course to give us some structure but that will obviously incur costs. How long or how far we pursue this I'm not sure, it will depend on how much my son enjoys it. We are learning the alphabet for Daddy's birthday to hopefully convince Daddy that Greek is a good idea  yes   smile ICDL even have Greek books plus their translation in English but no Greek audio unfortunately!!  I like elements of the classical education so Latin is also on the list but then that's definitely it for languages:-)

All the best! Lois
