BrillKids Software / Little Math - General Discussion / Re: Little Math on iPad?

CandyLucian - There is an app called Splashtop, which allows you to remotely control your PC through your iPad. It is a way to get around there not being an iPad app for Little Math. That said, it's more effort to use and slightly cumbersome, so I don't end up using it much.

BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Is my 14 mo daughter absorbing the LR lessons?
|
on: July 10, 2012, 02:43:28 PM

I feel a bit silly asking the question because I'm assuming the answer is yes...but that is an assumption, and I'm curious to hear if others have had similar experiences.
We've been doing LR for 6 months (since she was 8 months old) and are now on lesson 130. Her interest has waxed and waned and we have adjusted accordingly. But to date, I have no signs that she is absorbing any of the info. When playing by herself with her books, she often holds the book upside down, which tells me she doesn't quite get it.
I'm not frustrated, nor even considering backing off of the lessons (it's not like they do any harm, and it's good quality time with her). That said, I am curious if others have been where we are...and where it goes from here.
Thanks!

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / Re: Best place for newborn to sleep?

We swaddled our daughter for the first 3 months. I don't know what Doman thinks about that, but it worked brilliantly for us. Our daughter loved it. She typically slept for 6 hours+ from day 1 and we definitely attribute it to the swaddle. She slept next to the bed in an inclined baby cradle because she would throw up without her head being elevated. We also ran a sound machine for white noise. When it was time to move her to a cradle in her own bedroom we didn't have any issues. I attribute some of this success to the sound machine as it helped keep maintain a similar sleeping environment.
From what I've heard and read, it seems like there are as many theories about baby sleeping as there are babies. I think the trick is to find something that gives YOUR baby (and you!) the best night sleep possible. Everybody is better off when well rested.

BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Auto Forward Questions
|
on: January 30, 2012, 04:59:02 PM

I'm experiencing two limitations with the auto-forward feature, and I'm hoping there is a way around them
1) While I am able to auto-forward between slides, is there a way to auto-forward between SECTIONS? I keep the keyboard far away from the screen as it's a distraction, so I would like to be able for the entire lesson to play without me having to 'hit any key to continue'
2) Is there a way to make the auto-forward selection global? Every day, I individually turn on the auto-forward function for the multi-sensory lessons. I'd like to change the default play for these lessons to be on auto-forward.
Many thanks. I looked in other threads but couldn't find an answer.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: My Baby doesn't show any interest

I just started LR with my 8 month old. She's not super enthusiastic, but she's willing. There are a few things that I have found which help.
Time of day is very important. I do her lesson immediately after she wakes (or right after her bottle if she's hungry). She's very mellow at this time and seems willing to sit still. If I try to do it in the middle of her wake, she's very stimulated and does what you describe--she looks around in all directions.
I've also found that if I point and comment to things on screen (ex, "look at the tail on that lizard!"), it draws her attention back to the action.
Also, I give her permission to move around as long as she's watching. I start with her on my lap and the laptop on a desk (far enough away that she can't reach it). Midway through, she often wants to stand. I let her (while holding her) and adjust the screen so that it's facing her.
Finally, it absolutely has to be a distraction free environment. I keep the desk clean and close the door.
Hope this helps. Let me know. 4 months old is young, so that might be half the battle right there. Still, good on you for trying at that age.

BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Re: Yippeeeee.. My baby can actually read!!!

Congratulations, HemalShah! It's very encouraging to read posts like yours. I've just started the LR program with my 8 month old. We're on day 20. I wouldn't say she's enthusiastic about it, but she's willing, and that's enough for now. Especially when I read testimonials of where it could lead in a very short time.
Keep it up and please keep posting on progress.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Different color font for learning the colors?
|
on: January 16, 2012, 03:10:14 PM
|
I just started the LR program with my 8 month old. Great program, but there is one thing I don't understand. The colors have just been introduced--the color and font color don't correspond. For example, the word "orange" is written in blue font. I'm guessing there is some logic to this, but I don't see it. Anybody?
Thanks.
