2  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Mortensen blocks + Jump At Home math workbooks? on: March 26, 2015, 08:08:23 PM
I'm looking for math workbooks to use with our Mortensen math blocks. I don't know if any of you have used Jump At Home math or have other suggestions. My son is 4 and 1/2 and likes to use workbooks. The one I'm thinking of buying him is the Jump At Home 5th grade book.
The description says, "Covers mental math exercises, hundreds charts, times tables, fractions, sequences, t-tables, number lines, comparing, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, long division, rounding, estimating, money, algebra, decimals, and more!".

6th grade "JUMP at Home Grade 6: Junior Undiscovered Mathematical Prodigies
Covers mental math exercises, hundreds charts, times tables, fractions, sequences, t-tables, place value, comparing, adding with regrouping, adding larger numbers, subtraction, prime factorizations, multiplication, division, long division, rounding, estimating, integers, graphs, decimals, percents, and more!".

7th grade's description "JUMP at Home Grade 7: Junior Undiscovered Mathematical Prodigies
Covers mental math exercises, fractions, hundreds charts, sudoku, place value, properties of operations, multiplication, algebra, factors and multiples, square roots, adding and subtracting, decimal fractions, long division, decimals, percents, and more!".

The 8th grade says "JUMP at Home Grade 8: Junior Undiscovered Mathematical Prodigies
Covers mental math exercises, fractions, hundreds charts, sudoku, factors and multiples, prime factorizations, word problems, decimals, adding and subtracting, long division, algebra, ratios, integers, percents, powers, and more!"...

My 4 year old usually will do addition, subtractions, square numbers, algebra, division and multiplication daily with the blocks and we're waiting for our multiple tens kit to come  so we can do percentages and other math more easily. I'm only buying one math book so I need to think which grade we'll get the most out of right now with the blocks.

Thank you.

I don't know if this has already been on here but I thought I'd share this website. It has a lot to do for free. Does anyone pay the $10 a month? Is it worth it?

My four year old wanted to put these:

Those are great ideas!
We started making tens when we got our blocks to learn the names of the blocks. My two year old just likes to make stairs and that's it. She did make some nines and tens and yelled, "I'm a genius!". I love how proud it makes them feel. The blocks are really good for fine motor too just letting them play with the blocks alone.
My four year old likes to make multiplication towers and then bowl them down. I write down all the math problems they're doing for them to see. In my opinion, it only makes them more proud of what they're doing and more familiar with all the math symbols.
5  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: Mortensen math? on: November 16, 2014, 10:19:41 PM
Oh I didn't mean I don't have time for it. I meant it takes a lot of energy I don't have right now.  sleep
I'm feeling better and we've been doing more but I feel behind on everything. I'm letting the kids lead on what they feel like learning right now and we're doing what we can. They both love to cook and explore outdoors but since I haven't been feeling well my four year old has been really into building things and learning about animals and asking good questions like "Why do my hands and feet get pruney in the bath tub?"... The two year old loves tracing on her magnetabs and puzzles.

I might get the blocks out today for the kids to play with even though they haven't asked for them... And I'll get back to watching the videos... Has anyone tried the teacher's handbook from Geoff White?

Sonya, how much do you charge them to do EL with their kids? Is it extra from what you would charge just to watch them? Did you have to be certified to do that? I've thought about doing that but I don't like babysitting other peoples kids. I'd be afraid thinking "what if they take a nap and never wake up?"... I've heard lots of horror stories so I'm probably exaggerating.
6  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: Mortensen math? on: November 16, 2014, 08:31:03 PM
I was wondering how you guys were planning on doing that. I've seen people have three people on skype at once but I've never done that.

We haven't been playing with our blocks much. I haven't been feeling well.  Hopefully I'll be feeling better soon so we can get back to it. My 2 year old isn't really into the blocks so maybe after seeing other kids playing with them she will too. My 4 year old has all the combinations to make a 10 memorized. He even knows subtraction which I didn't think he knew. I'm very impressed with the blocks but I have to admit it's a lot of work for the parents. Homeschooling in general is a lot of work for parents so I guess there is no easy way.  There is just so much for the parent to learn.
7  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: Mortensen math? on: October 14, 2014, 07:17:00 PM
Those blocks are impressive!

I still say no too by accident. It's so hard to stop when I'm so used to saying it to them all day long  tongue
Luckily my kids haven't cared and my 4 year old likes to pretend he has an audience of kids correcting him "Nooo too big!". He says no to himself way more than I do and he thinks it's funny.
8  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: Mortensen math? on: October 14, 2014, 04:42:34 AM
Those look like they would be great for my 2 year old. It's hard to do math with her because my four year old wants to do it for her.

I saw your video on the Crewton Ramone facebook page and added you. I thought it would be better to give my skype information over that when everyone if ready.
9  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: Mortensen math? on: October 13, 2014, 12:01:25 AM
We would love to Skype.

Four year old doing square roots. Who would have thought you could teach little kids these things? Have you done square roots with the blocks and play doh? I haven't taught them square roots yet but that looks like fun. "You can see in the video he went from what is under the cup to he needed a peg leg because a crocodile ate his leg and it was bleeding. It wasn't even two seconds......" I must have missed that! how funny!

How do you teach skip counting? We've singing songs and using the paper inserts that came with our blocks and making towers out of our blocks. Nobody has them all memorized yet. Not even me blush but we're having fun learning.

We've been using the book with the blocks but it takes forever just to get half way. We haven't finished it yet but I think we'll split it into days. I might put it on our tablet and read it to them as a bed times story without the blocks. It really is a cute book!
10  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: Mortensen math? on: October 12, 2014, 09:13:26 PM
Playing with math smile My four year old and I made this.

We weren't supposed to make the wall and the fence touching but he knew we were adding just the fence.
11  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: Mortensen math? on: October 12, 2014, 09:05:50 PM
What a cutie pie! Thank you for sharing that with us. I love the toys finding the answers. You can tell he had fun.

We bought that e-book. It's really good for the price! I bought a password and the parent/teacher training. You get the book for free with a password. I wish I would've known that even though it was just a few dollars  Wink

One of the things we liked a lot was the free game he had on his site. We played it a lot while we waited for the blocks to come  http://www.crewtonramoneshouseofmath.com/free-addition-game.html
12  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: Mortensen math? on: October 08, 2014, 12:37:40 AM
Thank you for taking the time to type all that. I've learned so much too in the short amount of time that I've known about this math. I wish I was taught math this way when I was little. I did buy a combo kit when it was on sale for $80. We love it! Cuisenaire Rods are fun but you really need Mortensen blocks for this math.  Today my 2 and almost 4 year old did multiplication towers, building tens and doing percentages. They thought they were just playing with blocks. It's funny when they ask to do math.  The best part is how proud they are of themselves.

I really want the workbooks. They just look fun to do. The once had all smiley face books for $50 on ebay. I should have bought them then.  Do you have a password at Crewton Ramones House Of Math? Did you learn a lot from it? I would love a video for the kids to watch and work along with.
13  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: Mortensen math? on: August 26, 2014, 06:54:01 AM
About Math-u-see... I just saw on crewtonramoneshouseofmath.com in the FAQ's about how Mortensen math compares to Math-u-see... He said: "Steve Demme was a trainer with Mortensen Math they parted ways in 1990. Math U See combines traditional text book learning with the blocks, by traditional rather than emphasizing concept based teaching and math as a language they go level by level (more or less) they way traditional public schools do: addition then subtraction then multiplication then division etc...you won't see pre-schoolers doing algebra... "

Anyway here's our update,
This is such a smart way to teach math. I'm in love with it. I never thought I'd have so much fun teaching math. We are literally just playing with blocks and my 3 year old son is already remembering combinations for addition and subtracting and some pre algebra. The person who came up with it (Jerry Mortensen) was a teacher for a Montessori school and he took the idea of Montessori math and made it better. I play with the blocks with my 2 year old and she gets it too.
My son already remembers all the colors for each number and can solve math problems by himself if I give him a math problems on cards. I'm using cuisenaire  rods but I'm going to buy the actual plastic  thumbs down  much more expensive blocks in the future. The blocks I'm using are fine for us starting out but there is so much more we could do (Like building a math tower and knocking it down, or showing the hollow part as a negative number.) if we had the right blocks. There is also a lot of free videos to watch on how they use them.  I'm not going to bother wood burning dividers on the ones we have if we're getting the real Mortensen blocks. The Cuisenaire rods are fun too and the kit I have comes with a lot of fun game ideas. It's a good start for us. I learn better playing so I definitely teach better playing.

I was really worried about how I was going to teach my kids math because I am not good at it but now I'm not worried... I'm just overwhelmed with information  err

Has anyone else tried it? It's been around since the 80's! I thought it would be more popular on here.  happy

14  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Play sand??? on: August 13, 2014, 07:29:55 AM
I got the white Sandtastic sand at a Lakeshore Learning store today. It's nice. I don't notice any dust but it doesn't look much like the desert. Maybe that should be the sand the kids play with and the beach sand for stories... That wouldn't solve my problem of having possible cancer causing dust in the house though.

That Kinetic sand looks fun! I want to play with that too. I wonder if toys sink into it like quicksand?
15  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: Mortensen math? on: August 13, 2014, 07:06:31 AM
I ordered this and just received it today: http://www.amazon.com/ETA-hand2mind-Mathematics-Meaningful-Cuisenaire/dp/B008N1847O/?ref=pd_sbs_op_5&ie=UTF8&refRID=0TZV6BJH2C4W37MDEN05

It's a lot less work for us and much cheaper than the Mortensen blocks. I like that they come with a book and tons of idea cards. It'll make it easier for someone like me learning a new math concept.

Both of my kids loved playing with blocks and my 3-year-old really easily started solving math problems. We started today with an easy "Everybody wants to be a 10" game. He got out the ten rod and then picked another number like six. So it was 6 + x = 10 and he had to find out what x was. It was easy for him to see that four fit in the space to make the six the same size as ten. After putting the blocks back he told me he needed to try something and got the four back out and put it next to the ten and took the six back out and said "6 + 4 = 10 and 4 + 6 = 10 too!!"  rolleyes

My only complaints are that the set I bought has too many of some colors and not enough of others and they have no grooves or anything to show that 10 is 10 1's and not just one long stick. I think I'll take a wood burner to them to make the grooves. I also have a plastic base ten 100 tile that I'm going to cover with maybe duct tape to be X^2. I'll need some 10 rods too to represent x.

Math-u-see looks very similar. I'll have to look into that more.
