DadDude,
I am very interested in knowing what type of curriculum books and programs you are using with Henry.

Could you post a topic or reply to this one since I am certain that many other parents want to know the very same thing!

Thanks,
Diana (mom of Ethan)

Aangeles, you always have a great list of resources to use with Ella. The other art book is Dover Art Cards http://thecurriculumchoice.com/2009/07/dover-art-cards/
She is very blessed to have you as her mom! As for Science, there are simply too many books to list but here are some:

Science: “Developing Critical Thinking through Science”, ”A Reason For Science”WkBks only, and too many books to list because we LOVE SCIENCE. In the future we will primarily use “Noeo Homeschool Science” curriculum.

TeachingMyToddlers: Thank you for the kind words and links you posted  happy

Bella/Viv: I've looked into your link to art atelier and it does look like a nice system. It is a little bit pricey and not sure if it's different enough from the materials I already own to be worth the amount to spend on it? I suppose if someone didn't have any art materials/books/etc. already then the price would be able to justify itself. Perhaps, I'll revisit this program in a couple years to see if it's something better suited for us then. THANK YOU for sending the wonderful link to Erica's blog, I did purchase her geography unit where I am very pleased with it and LOVE that she is offering her Art unit for free. YAY for freebies  laugh
3  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: What's Your Long Term Educational Plans for your Early Learner? on: June 03, 2011, 01:34:20 AM
Mom2bee,

I have read many of your posts and continue to be impressed & inspired by all that you have planned for your future children. They are indeed blessed to have u as a mom.

Let us keep in mind the ultimate goal beyond "education" subjects. I'd want my son to also be academically advanced and provide him with a lifetime of opportunities to thrive.

Most importantly to be kind, to freely love others without expecting anything in return, to contribute to society & humanity, to leave our world better than it was before he arrived in it. That is my ultimate goal.

No one will ask you if you aced A.P. Calculus before they first read into your character.

What sort of individuals are we raising?
What are we raising them for?
What is the purpose of education?
These are the questions we must address.

Hi Aangeles, I have not used the program or heard much about it. I did access the link you posted and find that it is something I would not buy. Let me know if u decide to try it out and how it works for Ella.

Here are some of the Art programs that have impressed me which I use or will use in the future are; “Drawing with Children” by M. Brookes, “Discovering Great Artists” by M. Kohl, ”ARTistic Pursuits”, “The Usborne Art Treasury”, "Draw Write through History" series http://www.amazon.com/Draw-Write-Through-History,  "Draw Write Now", Book 5 & 6, and there is one other that is inspired by Charlotte Mason , pockets of cards for art study but I forgot what it's called. I also get ideas from different books. blink

I know it's a lot but you should see my collection of Science books! I really went over the top with our love for Science  big grin

7  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Reading Effectively & Critical Thinking on: May 23, 2011, 01:57:15 AM
I remember long ago, when I was a reading tutor, I would ask before/during/after questions with my students and couldn't find them in my garage to use with Ethan. So I'm sharing the information I've gathered from online resources. I write these questions on a notecard, sticky pad or homemade bookmark to ask while reading to or with my son. I don't ask him all of them and some I have to modify because of his young age.  happy

Discussion and critical thinking questioning strategy lead to deeper analysis of content. This makes the learning process more about absorbing and reflecting on all facets of the material in a natural and curious state. Here are a few examples of questions that invoke informal reasoning: “Why did you select that one?” “How are these different?” “What happened when you?” “What would happen if you?” “What can you do to make… happen?” “How do you think s/he feels about what happened?” These types of questions develop critical thinking skills and stimulate verbal development as the children try to communicate their reasoning.

When reading aloud, you can stop from time to time and orally complete  sentences like these:
•So far, I've learned...
•This made me think of...
•That didn't make sense.
•I think ___ will happen next.
•I reread that part because...
•I was confused by...
•I think the most important part was...
•That is interesting because...
•I wonder why...
•I just thought of...

To help readers learn to ask questions before, during, and after reading, think  aloud the next time you are reading a book, article, or set of directions. Write  each question on a post-it note and stick it on the text you have the question  about.

Ask questions such as:

"What clues does the title give me about the story?"
"Is this a  real or imaginary story?"
 "Why am I reading this?"
"What do I already  know about___?"
 "What predictions can I make?"

Start reading the text, and ask yourself questions while reading:

"What do I understand from what I just read?"
 "What is the main  idea?"
"What picture is the author painting in my head?"
"Do I need to  reread so that I understand?"

Then reread the text, asking the following questions when you are finished:

"Which of my predictions were right? What information from the text  tells me that I am correct?"
 "What were the main ideas?"
"What  connections can I make to the text? How do I feel about it?"

After students become aware of the best times to ask questions during the  reading process, be sure to ask them a variety of questions that:
•Can be used to gain a deeper understanding of the text
•Have answers that might be different for everyone
•Have answers that can be found in the text
•Clarify the author's intent
•Can help clarify meaning
•Help them make inferences
•Help them make predictions
•Help them make connections to other texts or prior  knowledge

Some of the most challenging questions are "Why?" questions about the  author's intentions and the design of the text. For example:

"Why do you think the author chose this particular setting?"
"Why do you think the author ended the story in this way?"
"Why do you think  the author chose to tell the story from the point of view of the daughter?"
"What does the author seem to be assuming about the reader's political  beliefs?"

Another way to challenge readers is to ask them open-ended question that  require evidence from the text to answer. For example:

"What does Huck think about girls? What is your evidence?"
"Which character in the story is most unlike Anna? Explain your reasons,  based on evidence from the novel?"
"What is the author's opinion about  affirmative action in higher education? How do you know?"

Hope this post helps you as it does for me!  Wink

I've atttached a document where you can print it out on cardstock paper & laminate it, then cut it out into strips of questions. I cut this page into 4 strips of "bookmarks".

10  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: What books are you reading this week? on: April 26, 2011, 04:53:27 PM
"The Curious Garden", "Karate Hour", "Whose garden is it?", Franklin series of stories, "This Land is Your Land", "See inside your Body" Usbourne, any book from author Anna Milbourne, Disney stories, books about spirituality, God, Jesus and other religions of the world. There are sooo many more, I don't think I have the patience to write them all down smile We usually have around 30-50 books out at a time from the library that get rotated with new set of 30-50 books every 2 months.

These are mostly non-fiction or classic stories. My son especially enjoys anything with lots of illustrations and books with audio versions. I also keep an eye out for quality easy readers and math/science books. He often requests books be read to him throughout the day.

 1.  The Water Hole by Graeme Base

"Fantastic way to teach about geography, wild animals, habitats, migration. The illusrations hidden within pictures are beautiful. Just love this book!"

On the Seashore (Picture Books) by Anna Milbourne
All of Anna Milbournes books are fantastic with great illustrations and contain non-fiction material in a child friendly way! "Sunny Day, Windy Day, Snowy Day" are all great.

On the Moon by Anna Milbourne

   The Dinosaur by Anna Milbourne

Under the Sea (Picture Books) by Anna Milbourne

In the Castle (Picture Books) by Anna Milbourne

Under the Ground (Picture Books) by Anna Milbourne

My Hands (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science) by Aliki

In a Nutshell (Sharing Nature With Children Book) by Joseph Anthony

Good Morning, Digger by Anne Rockwell He makes me read this almost everyday.

Which Way to the Revolution?: A Book About Maps by Bob Barner A bit advanced but still worth reading to teach concept of following a map. I don't like the british referral as "rats" part!

Walt Disney's Pinocchio (A First little golden book) by Nikki Grimes A classic story of telling the truth/morals.

What Is an Amphibian? (Animal Kingdom) by Lola M. Schaefer This and other titles like "What is a Reptile", are simple, with clear pictures and effective in teaching.

The Three Bears by Paul Galdone  I really like this version of "three little bears" and the audio is very entertaining.

The Apple Pie Tree by Zoe Hall

Over in the Jungle: A Rainforest Rhyme by Marianne Collins Berkes "Over in the Ocean" is also very fun to read.

Museum ABC by The (NY) Metropolitan Museum of Art Great at introducing Art.

Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin (Aladdin Picture Books) by Lloyd Moss This is awesome with the audio.

We All Go Traveling By (Barefoot Paperback) by Sheena Roberts This is great with the audio.

Bees, Snails, & Peacock Tails: Patterns & Shapes . . . Naturally by Betsy Franco

Jack in the Beanstalk

There are many more but the key to my selection of books is to have mostly non-fiction material in them unless they are classic literature/Aeosp Fables/Poems and fun for us to read while learning something valuable! Hope this list is helpful!! yes
11  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Good posture on: April 26, 2011, 04:40:34 PM
Ballet is great for posture so your daughter will benefit from it. I personally use Element Ballet Conditioning Work out DVD http://amzn.com/B000WC38BO at home along with Pilates DVD's. Maybe your daughter will like to join you while u play a dvd at home?

Also, I'm very picky on the height of pillows, as I feel it will misalign neck/back posture if it is too high. So I'm still doing research on the best pillow for my 3 yr old son and for ourselves. I think we're going to buy 100% silk pillow case coverings and possibly wool filled pillows, not sure yet.

I'm glad u found this post helpful Mela Bala and momtobaby!  happy

I also love this new CD: Sacred & Classical- Children's Collection http://amzn.com/B000CA9UHC

While visiting Bahai House of Worship, they had a visitors center where I came across this CD for $15.00. I'm so pleased with the purchase and wanted to review it. It contains affirmations/hyms from different parts of the world, so not every song is in English. Each song has a different child reading it as classical music is played in the background. Each song is approximatly 1-2 minutes in length and love the idea that my son can enjoy listening to such positive and lovely music while learning affirmations. You can preview the songs on Amazon's MP3 version of this cd and it's only $8.99 on there.

Christine we have both LR and YCCR, they are both really good. I like using each of them every other day, for example one day YCCR and the next day LR. My little guy gets bored quickly so I have do show him diff. things all the time.

I have 2 YCCR DVD sets and one that I'm currently using and one that I'm selling here in the "sell & swap" forum.

I'm selling the new 5DVD set for $70 because I got an extra one as a gift. If ur interested, send me a message. It's a really great set and way better than YBCR.
