Local Support Groups /

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Right brain learning - Spanish?

Wink to Learn Spanish. I tried it with my son before we started any Spanish (he was just before 2 y.o.). He was not interested at all. Now, after watching Salsa Spanish videos for 2 months, which he loves, he seems to like Wink to Learn Spanish. I guess, originally he did not show interest in Wink to Learn because Spanish was not familiar to him.
It seems to me that the intonation on the DVDs is kind of monotonous. It is also a little bit strange that they show, two hands/feet/ears, but give words in singular. Apart from these minor negatives (although there may be a reason behind them), I believe it is a great program that will give my son good vocabulary and right brain training. Each session is 2 minutes.

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Bilingual toddler: When to start with picture cards in second language?

I'm sure I posted yesterday but I do not see my post. Anyway.
Velvetkatze, I'm in a similar situation. I'm Russian who lives in the US. I chose not to follow OPOL for the same reasons that you did. We also have and read many more books in English than in Russian. I'm concerned though that my son will not be willing to speak Russian. He just starter saying single words (he is 2 yo). Out of about 40 words he can say, only 6-8 are Russian words, the rest are English words. Did you have the same with your daughter? How did you encourage her to speak Russian?
I have a number of Russian friends here. And those who did not follow OPOL, have a hard time encouraging their kids to speak Russian. Basically, the mother speaks Russian to a kid, and the kid responds in English. They say it's either this, or they have to fight over language every time they talk. Do you notice any resistance from your daughter to speak Russian? I would think that it is easier for her to express herself in English. How do you encourage her to speak Russian?

Hi Martina, You may find this blog helpful. It contains a lot of links explaining benefits of different supplements for kids. http://dsdaytoday.blogspot.com/2011/03/complete-protocol.htmlI'm researching this topic myself right now. I give my son only probiotics right now. I have been using several supplements for myself for years, so I'm a true believer in supplementation. I'm just like you, still unsure what to give to a small child. I tried to give my son lecithin to help his speech, and I believe it helped, although I did not stick with it, as he did not like the taste of it. I will probably start again as he is still not talking much. Good luck!

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: Spanish teaching resources - interesting findings

Hi Jane,
Thank you for sharing the Spanish resources.
We have just started learning Spanish with my almost 2-year old son. Neither me, nor my husband speak Spanish (my native language is Russian, and my husband's is English). Right now we only watch Salsa, 1 episode a day, although he loves it and asks for more.
What are the 4 languages that your son speaks? At what age did you introduce those languages? Does he speak any languages that neither you, nor your husband speaks? Would you share your story of teaching foreign languages to your son?
I would like to start Chinese with my son as well. I would actually love to have my son learn as many languages as possible. Just not sure how to do it. Thanks!

Local Support Groups / Русский / DVD player for Russian DVDs
|
