My husband and I both have computer science degrees and are interested in learning about how other parents are teaching programming to their children.

Years ago, our 11-year-old had success with learning coding fundamentals (interest in coding, understanding the concept of code syntax, loops, variables) by utilizing the following resources:

1. Scratch
2. Goanimate
3. Xtranormal (no longer active - http://professorjosh.com/2013/07/29/xtranormal-is-saying-goodbye-for-now-a-few-alternatives-to-try/)

He also tried my personal favorite, Treehouse (http://teamtreehouse.com/), with no success.    He didn't like learning through video and it was ineffective for him.

We did not do much with Code Avengers (http://www.codeavengers.com/) but it may be worth a try for someone.



Again, he is now 11.  We are now using Codecademy(http://www.codecademy.com) to teach basic HTML5 and Javascript.

I recently came across the following list that may provide more opportunities for older kids to learn Javascript. http://www.hackreactor.com/prepare-for-admissions-challenge

My plans:  I'm also thinking about hiring a college student this summer to help show the 11-year-old how to do more with Javascript.  I may incorporate the $99 Finch robot (http://www.finchrobot.com) into this effort.  Does anyone have any experience with Finch?  It looks like Finch can be programmed in a number of languages outside of just Javascript (including Scratch).  If the robot is entertaining enough, I may use it to help our 5-year-old learn Scratch as well.

Hello everyone from the US (east coast)!

I'm an African-American mom of 3 boys (an 11-year-old who loves math, a 5-year-old who loves to act and a 3-month-old who loves everything).  We used BrillKids Little Reader along with homemade materials with the 5-year-old when he was 10 months old.  We were thrilled when he learned to read before he turned 2. 

I've created homemade materials for the 3-month-old and plan to start him with Little Reader soon.

I am also reading some of the Glenn Doman series: How To Teach Your Baby To Be Physically Superb,  How To Teach Your Baby To Read, and How To Teach Your Baby To Swim: From Birth To Age Six.

We are interested in also teaching our children a number of languages (we speak some of them, others are new): Russian, Hebrew, Mandarin Chinese and Swahili.

We are excited to meet like-minded parents!

Thanks for posting!  Homeschooling makes so much sense.  I am a huge homeschooling advocate.

This is my friend's daughter.  If I remember correctly, her parents used a hybrid homeschooling model.  While she went to school during the day, her dedicated parents "homeschooled" her in a consistent and structured way during the evenings for years and years.
