1  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Seizures from illness in babies?? on: May 29, 2009, 02:11:59 AM
Hi everyone. I have just gotten out of hospital after my 13 month old daughter had a seizure while breastfeeding. The doctors thought it might be due to fever which she did not have. She then went on to have two more seizures in hospital each time I was breastfeeding. She had gastro the day prior to having the first seizure and after many tests which all came back clear the doctors decided that the gastro caused the seizures. I am just wondering if anyone else has had their baby have a seizure due to an illness. Now i am scared that this will happen whenever she gets sick as she has never been sick before. It would be nice to know just how common this is.
2  Parents' Lounge / General Pregnancy / Re: Breastfeeding while pregnant on: May 19, 2009, 10:40:49 AM
Thanks for all the advice smile I would love to tandem feed but I know a lot of it will depend on my daughter if she decides to wean or not. I am not too worried about not having enough milk as I have always had enough milk to feed twins smile and still have plenty there. I will just follow my babies lead and see how things go.

Thanks again...its great to be able to share in other mums (and dads) experiences.

4  Parents' Lounge / General Pregnancy / Breastfeeding while pregnant on: May 18, 2009, 02:26:41 AM
Hi I have a 13 month old daughter and have just found out I'm expecting again smile.
I am still breastfeeding and was just wondering how many people have breastfed while pregnant and still had a healthy baby, also how many continued breastfeeding the older child as well as the new baby.

I am trying to decide if I should wean my baby before the new one is born (I dont really want to) just wondering how hard people found it breastfeeding both.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
5  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Learning to use a spoon on: May 15, 2009, 12:02:44 AM
smile I was very proud of my little 13 month old today as this morning I put a bit of porridge on her high chair tray and gave her a spoon. I have never done this before so imagine my surprise when my daughter scooped a bit of porridge onto the spoon and then put it into her mouth. smile A huge surprise. LOL hopefully a sign of things to come.

6  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Should I give up? on: May 10, 2009, 07:48:10 AM
I have a 12 month old daughter who loves her books. I mean that she will not touch any of her toys, she only wants her books. She will not do anything but bring her books to us (mummy and daddy) to read to her. If we have visitors over she will grab a book and bring it to them.

When she was 7-8months old she was completely NOT interested in books...we would try to read to her and she wouldnt look, it got very discouraging so I stopped reading to her and just played other games.

I only started reading to her again at about 10 months of age.

Now about the flash cards, I tried them and found that my daughter was mainly interested in them if they had a picture with them. I found LR to be a lot better as she would actually watch them all the way through and would actually get grumpy if I turned the lesson off. I found that she enjoyed watching the animal slideshows that had noise included with the pictures.

Dont give up, there are many other methods to teach your children with, just remember to enjoy your time with them as they are only little for so long smile

7  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Confessions of a Doman mom on: May 08, 2009, 12:31:06 PM
My daughter doesn't sit still for too long even though she is not quite mobile yet.  Which brings the concern on how it is going to be once she gets mobile  blink

I didnt really read to my daughter as much as I should (and wanted to) when she was younger. She would pull at the book and scream and wouldnt sit on my lap or sit still. I only really started reading to her about 4 months ago, and now I cant stop LOL.
She is 12 months old now and is only interested in her books, I sit down to rest for a bit after doing some work around the house (I'm a stay at home mum), and she will toddle up to me (she used to crawl til she started walking a month ago) with a book in her hand and then shove it at me saying mumumumum...
I take this to mean "read me this book" smile So i sit and read the book, then again and again, until I put it down elsewhere. Then she will pick it up again and bring it back, LOL or another one she has found...she has plenty.

I wouldnt worry too much about her not sitting still. My daughter was like that too and now she will stand still while I read it or sit on my lap if I ask her to.

I hope it sorts itself out for you smile
8  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Separation Anxiety on: May 08, 2009, 12:17:45 PM
I am very lucky as my daughter never really went through a really got bad anxiety and still doesnt.
I was told in the hospital and read lots of books that state that picking your child up quickly when they cry as infants, the less they will cry when they are older.

I believe this to be true. I NEVER let my daughter cry when she was younger, or atleast not for very long (depending how long it took to get to her) and now she doesnt cry much at all. Is a very confident little girl who can leave me at playgroups etc...quite comfortably to explore. Only coming back when she is tired or gets hurt.

On the contrary, I have a friend who has put her child to bed, as an infant, at a certain time, then told him that she would not be opening the door until morning. She slept with ear muffs on while her child screamed himself to sleep (this method of getting your child to sleep was recommended by a so called expert). In the morning she would get him out of bed at the time that she said and no sooner. This went on until he learned that no one would come if he cried and he had to look after himself.

At playgroup (and home) this child was clingy and nervous, never wanting to let his mother out of his sight...he would run (or crawl) screaming if she disappeared for a second.

I believe that a good way to limit separation anxiety (although babies will almost always cry when left with someone other than the main carer) is to provide your child with a loving, stable home. Be very responsive when your child is an infant. Try to understand any signals they are giving you before they get to the crying stage (eg mouthing fingers etc..when hungry) and respond to them.

But when they get a bit older it is important to recognise if the cry is an 'I need you cry' or if it is just attention seeking LOL there is a difference. smile

I know many will disagree with me but I am just stating my opinion and experiences in the hope it may help someone.

9  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Getting your child to eat. on: May 08, 2009, 11:56:49 AM
Hi Rose
Did you start cutting down on breastfeeding time? i know that formula fed babies usually drink a lot less at around 1 year.
Do you breastfeed her before or after her meals?
Have you tried letting her feed herself?

I dont breastfeed my daughter until after meals and she doesnt really want it that much any more as she has just entered toddlerdom LOL and is too busy exploring her world, and enjoying this new game of walking.

Thank you everyone who posted great responses smile

I have finally gotten her to eat.

In the morning I will give her a weetbix spread with butter and vegemite, kinda like toast with a difference. She loves the crunchiness and it gives me a chance to cook up some rolled oats with sultanas for me which she loves to share. (Usually she only eats half the weetbix but it is a start)

For lunch she gets to make a huge mess, I give her a variety salad foods, which she loves, to pick at (meaning: throwing anything that doesnt appeal on the floor LOL) while I get my own lunch which once again I share with her.

Tea time she gets a modified version of our family meal, which she now eats happily.

I think that her problem was that she was teething (8 teeth at once) and hadnt had a break from teething since before she was 5 months old. (She is 12 months old with 16 teeth)

Anyway, once again thanks for everyone's kind advice and I hope that anyone else with the same problem has found an answer through this post.

Cheers smile
10  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: STOP MOVING...baby won't stop moving when changing diaper on: May 08, 2009, 11:41:27 AM
Hi I have had that problem with my daughter ever since she learned to crawl smile she just wanted to be moving.
I tried giving her toys but they were boring LOL she wanted to play.

I used to try playing games with her, blowing rasberries on her tummy, making it fun, but she still tried to run away and when I tried to hold her still she would get upset and hold her breath, before letting out a ripper of a scream, like I was killing her  rolleyes Living in a unit I was worried that I might have next door neighbours knocking on my door.

Now at 12 months I keep her quiet by letting her play with an empty vaseline container, it fascinates her as I always have one with me for my lips smile I find letting her play with unusual things will keep her still...especially shoes...she will chew on them (they are quite clean) all day if i let her.

I am using cloth nappies with pins, LOL, so she really doesnt want to wriggle too much...

Just try letting your baby play with something safe, that isnt a regular toy, eg. an empty container that is just right for baby hands.

Best of luck, hope it gets better smile
11  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Music / Re: How to teach your child to sing??? on: May 07, 2009, 12:29:06 PM

That was a good site. I have only heard of Trebellina before through this site smile.
I wonder if it is possible for an adult to learn perfect pitch, would it be impossible or just very hard  unsure
12  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Making your own Baby Formula on: May 07, 2009, 09:58:57 AM
That is interesting, I am breastfeeding but it is interesting to know that you can make formula yourself.
I wonder how many people would go to all the effort though  LOL
13  Parents' Lounge / Coffee Corner - General Chat / Re: Left-Handed or Right-Handed Preference on: May 07, 2009, 09:26:20 AM
Hey found an interesting link about left handedness smile

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Left-handed

My daughter still isnt show much preference for either hand...my mum and father-in-law keep telling me to put everything in her right hand so that she is right handed but my partner and I believe in freedom of choice and will be happy no matter which hand she uses.
14  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Music / Re: How to teach your child to sing??? on: May 07, 2009, 08:55:50 AM
Trebellina is a program to help teach your child music and they are also a partner of brill kids, and you can get discount voucher from the forum shop.

This is what they say about trebellina from their website:

Teach Your Baby Music With Trebellina
Countless parents want to afford their children the opportunities associated with a better education and know that teaching music to young children is a great way to start.
Music is a language.  Like all languages, the earlier it is introduced, the better.   Just as you begin to teach your baby to speak your native language starting at birth, you can teach your baby music!

Are you a parent looking for a way to develop your young child’s musical abilities before he or she is old enough to take formal music lessons?  The award-winning Trebellina DVD will help you take on the task with music lessons created just for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers.

Trebellina helps young children develop pitch and teaches them to read music in a super fun and engaging manner.  Trebellina's patented method of teaching note reading and pitch is simultaneously effective and entertaining.  The Trebellina DVD also introduces little ones to instrument names and their sounds, beautifully demonstrating how different instruments sound individually and collectively in a piece of music.

Most parents are acutely aware of the amazing abilities of a baby’s brain.  Yet many parents do not take advantage of these first few years of life to expose their babies to concepts such as reading or music which are so easily learned at that time.  The baby’s power to absorb what it experiences through sight, sound, and feeling is not to be underestimated!  Babies can learn music, just as they learn any other language!

The Trebellina DVD occupies a special place in a modern baby’s musical development.  Trebellina fills the gap between the mommy-and-me music classes currently offered to young children and the formal music lessons that young children typically wait years before they can begin.   Trebellina also helps round out the musical experience for young children who study Suzuki through its emphasis on reading written music. Moreover, with Trebellina, parents jumpstart their children's music education at a fraction of the cost of just one typical music lesson!

Trebellina has won many awards and accolades from “noteworthy” organizations, including Dr. Toy, iParenting Media, Aegis, Dove and The National Parenting Center.  More importantly, parents and children worldwide rave over Trebellina.

This is where I got the information from:

http://www.trebellina.com/about-trebellina.html
