Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Early reading leads to eyesight problems?
|
on: May 08, 2009, 09:31:11 AM

My eldest son learnt to read at the age of 2. From then on, he picks up books which he loves , and the first thing he does upon waking up is pick up a book and read. Just before he turned 4, we discovered he couldn't see road signs very well, and brought him for an eye test. We discovered that he was myopic on one eye (short-sightedness), and far-sighted on the other eye, which is not exactly common. Most people have myopia on both eyes or far-sightedness on both. He also has high astigmatism. He has been wearing glasses since, and within a year, his myopic condition got worse.
I know these eyesight problems have got to do with genes (his father needed to wear glasses at 7yrs old). But is there any relation between early reading and eyesight as well? My 2nd son nearing 5 yrs old has perfect sight so far, and he only learnt to read at 4.
Pls share your experiences. Thanks!

I tried to google to find out more about it, but seems like i can't find any other info. Saw that the chairman/managing director was managing Shichida Child Academy in Japan. Wonder what's the difference between this and Shichida?
Would love to hear from anyone whose child is attending this programme.

EARLY LEARNING / Homeschooling / Re: comparing homeschooling curriculums - what do you use?

Hi omimama
I'm doing something similar, using the textbooks which the public schools are using, and then supplementing with other resources from the library, internet etc. I do agree you don't need to spend a lot of money on homeschooling in this aspect. But I still end up buying lots of books for my boys because the books may not be available in the library. And they love reading so much that's the first thing my eldest son does when he wakes up in the morning, and my 2nd son might follow next.

EARLY LEARNING / Homeschooling / Re: Any Homeschoolers in Singapore?

Hi Violin There is, i think, an increasing number of homeschoolers in Singapore. As iyph28 has correctly pointed out, the Compulsory Education Act applies to Singapore citizens. At the end of 6 years, the children have to take a Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE). They have a yahoo group here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/singaporehg/ , though I do not think all the homeschoolers join this group. My eldest son is 6 years old (Primary 1) this year, and I have started homeschooling him formally

Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: breastfeeding poll

I breastfed my eldest until he was 15 months old, then I had to stop as I got pregnant (without getting my menstrual cycle back beforehand), causing my breasts to become dry and breastfeeding became painful for me. After delivery, I engaged my eldest's help to nurse whenever my breasts feel engorged, especially during the first week. From then on, I nursed both newborn and toddler whenever possible (usually in the lying-down position). Nursed them until my eldest was 4 and 1/2 years old and my second-born almost 3 years old, and had to stop because of my third pregnancy. I still have fond memories of the times when they were happy to see me home from work, and chanting 'Milk! Milk!'. When I offered to nurse them after their brother was born, they adamantly refused and even said "Yuck!"

Yes, I used A4 paper and wrote a letter on each page. Then I cut out different pictures from magazines or books for my son to stick. I try to use pictures of real objects as opposed to clipart.
