31  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Is anyone using iPad for kids? on: April 13, 2010, 05:43:37 PM
Hello!

We just bought yesterday an iPad for our 5 year old. We are very excited because it has a lot of educational applications for kids. They even have some applications for babies, like flashcards, ABCs, colors and shapes, animals, etc.

I was wondering if anyone has an iPad that are using as an educational tool for kids, and if you can recommend any good educational applications.

And for the Brillkids Team, do you have any plans on making an application in the near future for iPads?

Thanks!!
32  Parents' Lounge / General Parenting / Re: Is intelligence genetic? on: April 08, 2010, 06:48:15 PM
When I was in elementary school there was this boy that was so brilliant, he was way ahead of everyone else, and his family didn't seem to spend a lot of resources on making him brilliant, he just was.
And I still see kids that their parents seem to be clueless on how to educate the kids, but yet some kids turn out just fine.

But I asked this because I remember reading that genetics do not play a role in intelligence, that is nit something you can inherit. And I always wonder, if parents raise the same way their kids, why is it some kids seem to ahead of their siblings?

Hello!

I was wondering what do you guys think about intelligence. Do you believe that is genetic?, what do you think about some kids that have not had as much stimulation by their parents and yet prove to be as smart or smarter than the rest?

Do you believe that there are different types of intelligence?

Thanks for your opinions!

35  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: 3-year-old reading the First Amendment on: April 06, 2010, 07:12:25 PM
Wow, I'm very impressed!
Just out of curiosity, did you do any baby reading program with him?

Or did you teach him to read on your own method? I have not read your older posts, so maybe you already explained this previously smile.
36  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Parenting is not about flash cards on: April 06, 2010, 05:39:46 PM
I agree. When I was pregnant with my first child I read all these books of early education and planned for a lot of the Doman activities. I remember people giving me the weird look, so I actually didn't want to share my educational experiences with anybody, including family, because everyone will giggle and try to test my child to see if he was actually any smarter than the other kids, etc.
The truth is, that even though I don't see a huge difference from my child to other kids, I know he really enjoys the learning process, he is always so curious and avid of learning new things, and he remembers everything! As far as I know, in comparison with myself at his age he is for sure ahead than when I was a kid.

That been said, I see a lot of parents than in one way or the other are teaching their kids and are providing with educational experiences to their little ones. Most libraries here have a "Baby book hour", which is a start, you can turn on your tv in the USA on PBS and they have a great educational programming for babies, toddlers and kids.

Bottom line, I am excited to educate my daughter which is 3 months old now, and the truth is that I will still not share this with friends and family because it raises some kind of weird competitive feeling, is almost like you are telling them that your kid is better than theirs, which in my case I do not feel that way. I believe that all kids have the same great potential but you have to invest time with them.

Is why I was thrilled to find this forum, and I am so happy that we can even have this conversation in a civilized way  smile .

37  Parents' Lounge / Introduce Yourself / Re: Howdy from Texas!! on: April 05, 2010, 02:33:18 AM
Hi Texaslady!

I came across your blog while googling Doman, and I find it very interesting that you and your husband are documenting your process with both of your children regarding using the Doman method.
I am very curious about some things, not sure if you already talked about this in previous posts but if so feel free to paste a link for me to follow up  blush

1.- Did you use any commercial reading program/method for Timothy?
if so, what dis you use?, when did you start?, is he reading now?

2.- Since when did you start LR with your two kids?

3.- Are you doing something different (in terms of programs) for your baby vs. what you did with your first son?

Thanks!

I really like your blog!  smile
38  BrillKids Software / Little Reader - General Discussion / Re: Mac, Linux, 64-bit Windows users - Please raise your hands! on: April 05, 2010, 12:54:10 AM
Hi!

Could you please explain me how can I download LR and LM to my Mac? Well, I actually did downloaded for the 14 day Free trial, but I could never open the software because my mac did not recognize it.

I only have iMacs at home and would love to have LR and LM, but I can't.

Thanks for your advise!

Thank you!

How long do you leave your child on tummy time? mine really hates tummy time! wacko
40  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: unhealthy pressure placed on children to succeed on: March 26, 2010, 11:44:22 PM
Hi Akalori,

I can see your point as well. I do believe that there is a difference in how boys and girls learn, and how they show their skills. I didn't think so before until I had my own boy and noticed this when he was compared to girl peers or cousins, then it seemed he was somehow always behind, and of course, it made me feel worried and anxious about his development and I stared to think if maybe I was doing something different.

Anyhow, I can see he loves learning new things everyday, and it amazes me, but as every person, he has preferences on what he'd rather do with his time, and usually is not academics sitting down. He is more physical and creative.
Is hard for me to understand how to teach a boy, because I feel I am in the opposite corner, but my husband has done a great job with him.

My point is, as long as the child is having fun learning and the parent enjoys the personal process of their own child it won't turn into a "race" to compare kids on who is the fastest and the smartest.
There are families that will always try to "prove" their kids as the more "advanced", but I personally try to avoid such people.
41  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: Weekly goals on: March 26, 2010, 02:54:31 AM
Wow! This sound very cool! how much time do you spend, an average, teaching your child a day? I have a 2.5 month old and an almost 5 year old, and really struggle juggling the home responsibilities, work and having a structured educational setting.
With our first born I bought a lot of educational materials but I always had a hard time finding the time to do all the activities. I'm planning and hoping to improve the learning routine with our new baby and still make more efficient the learning process with my 5 year old. Any tips?
42  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / Re: Anyone else doing Doman with a newborn? on: March 24, 2010, 02:53:30 PM
Also how long do you place your baby on her tummy?, mine starts crying the instant I place it on her tummy. I talk to her and rub her back but she looks so miserable while in tummy time that is hard for me to do this activity.

She loves flash cards and she actually pays attention. I sometimes describes what is in the flash card or sing to her, and she seems very content.

Regarding feeling toys with different textures, she seems to have her hands most of the time closed, how okd do they need to be for this activity?

Thanks!

Did any of you build a crawling track?
Can you buy this without breaking the bank?

Thanks!

Thanks!
