BEYOND EARLY LEARNING (for older years) / General Discussions - After Early Learning / Re: Early academic learning is harmful?

Hello everybody, It’s been a while since I visited this website. My son was about 14 months old when we started the reading program (Your Baby Can Read) and later math, music, dance, whatever I could think of. Plus he is bilingual. Not only understans and speaks, but I tought him read and write in Hungarian also. He is 9 years old now. He is an only child. He skipped a grade from 1st to second grade, so he is going to be in 5th grade in september. He is still one of the bests in his class, still advanced in reading and math is not a challange (yet?). He loves reading and with that, his writing skills are really good. He has friends, socially normal, plays the violin ( he started when he was 4), does taekwondo. He is interested in lots of different thinngs..... I am apsolutely positive, that early learning is not harmful. I never understood why would we hold them back when they are interested in learning ( for them is rather trying, exploring) new things. It could be harmfull if they didnt want to do that. Of course I would never force it. All in all, I am very happy that I did what I did with him, for him and I really appreciate this website, the moms and dads who shared their journey, ideas, discoveries...I learned a lot from them. Thanks again for everybody.

My son is 5 years old and reads on a second grade level. One of his favorite is the Family tree house. Anyway, we are going for a long trip soon and even though I will bring a lots of books with us, I also thought that some Apps would be great to read books, stories. We have an Ipad, no kindle. Thanks for your help in advance.

EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Kids and soda

Hi, I would like to know what you think about young kids drinking soda. I have a 5 year old and lately he started to ask for soda when we go out to eat. I hardly drink any soda but my husband drinks regularly. I am against it but once in a while I give in and let him have a few sips. Thank you for your opinion in advance.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / Re: Teaching toddler chess?

That was one of my goals too. I think my son was not 4 yet when I started to introduce the game. I bought the app DinoChess he loved it and we still use it since it has different levels. Along with that I also bought the board game No Stress Chess. That was a great start to play not a whole game of course but to learn how to set up the pieces and play little games practicing the rules of the different pieces. Now he is 5 and knows a lot and loves to play chess. We still have a lot to learn ( unfortunately I had no idea about the whole game, I am learning with him) but we have fun and also getting better. There is a new app out there from the Hungarian Judit Polgar (chess grandmaster). It's called ChessPlayground. Hope I could help.

Since my son is reading a lot (almost 5 years old) I am kind of worried a little about his eyes. I haven't noticed anything yet but I started to think about some kind of eye exercises or apps. If anybody have any idea and want to share, would be appreciated.

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Do you want to share your favorite Ipad apps?
|

I have some really good apps for my almost 5 years old son he loves them and still have a lot to do with them, but I thought I should look around for new treasures. One of my favorite is Bugs and Bubbles with lots of interesting games in it. Also the Teach me kindergarten which seems a little easy now (especially the spelling part) but my son still enjoys working on it. And my other treasure is Math, age 3-5 and Math, age 4-6. I also love this app, because you can set different languages on your Ipad. Do you have any favorite? Would you like to share? Thanks in advance.

My son will be 5 in November and then Xmas.....I have the same problem. I've just started to look around and found a talking microscope. It seems interesting, something different and educational at the same time. Last year we also bought an ant farm for him. It was a lot of fun watching them building their tunnels, sleeping...

EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: How much do your 4-6 old children read to themselves?
|
on: September 18, 2013, 02:42:45 PM

My son will be 5 in November and we started to teach him when he was 13 months old (YBCR). since then reading is part of our life. It is part of our every day routine. Even though he goes to school every day, full day we still read together in the morning and in the evening for sure. And I can tell that he loves reading! And I am really happy about it.He always takes a book with him in the car and even in the bathroom. I also use reading for its purpose: to get information. So I ask him to read the instruction on the box or read the signs on the street, stores, at the airport.... We go to the library every week. Since school started sometimes I go without him, but he is still excited about the new books when he comes home. He doesn't watch a lot of TV either. We don't even have time for that. Instead of TV he can use the Ipad with lots of educational apps on it so he still learns or practicing something. Hope I could help.
