31  Products Marketplace / Product Discussions and Reviews / Re: What to do after YBCD on: April 07, 2012, 05:18:00 PM
Thanks Keri,

I guess I was lumping Your Child Can Discover with Your Baby Can Discover since they came in the same set.  We are on the last disk of Your Child Can Discover.  We love the whole set.

Thanks for the link to Sparkabilities.  I might let him watch the preview on the site first.  I watched the Toddler preview and it seems like it might be a little slow/boring for him.  Hopefully not!
32  Products Marketplace / Product Discussions and Reviews / What to do after YBCD on: April 06, 2012, 08:47:56 PM
I absolutely LOVE the Your Baby Can Discover series.  What is more important, is my son loves them.  We're on the last DVD, however.  While I still plan to show them every once in a while for the next few years, I would love a suggestion as to where to go next.  We have Your Child Can Read, although he doesn't like them quite as much.  I tried Wink to Learn Spanish and was not a big fan, so I do not know if I should try their Encyclopedic Animals or not.  Does anyone know of something more similar to Your Baby Can Discover?
33  Products Marketplace / Product Discussions and Reviews / Reading Amigo Review on: January 15, 2012, 07:24:04 PM
If anyone is interested, I did a review of Reading Amigo.  Since I don't think the photos will copy and paste well, I will just link to my blog, sorry.

35  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Encyclopedic Knowledge / Cheap Flashcards on: August 09, 2011, 04:22:45 PM
Just wanted to share that I found some good flash cards in the dollar section at Target.  Since my son is still so young, I don't like to use flash cards with abstract cartoons.  I was happy to get some with photographs or realistic pictures, and so inexpensively!  I found Animals of the World, Insects and Small Critters, US Presidents, and World Landmarks.

I know not everyone lives in the US, so I am sorry if this doesn't apply.
36  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: Wink to Learn Spanish - Should I Toss It? on: August 04, 2011, 12:55:47 PM
Yes, I have heard of YBCR in Spanish (although I did buy Your Baby Can Speak Spanish because I got 4 glitchy disks).  If I get my money back I might do that, I was just hoping for the faster presentation style offered by WTL.  I am also working on making my own video, it just takes a long time to gather images.
37  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Wink to Learn Spanish - Should I Toss It? on: August 04, 2011, 12:37:02 AM
I received my Wink to Learn Spanish today and really don't know what to do.  The following is copied from my blog post about it.

"I was SO excited this afternoon, our Wink to Learn Spanish set arrived!  I had to keep myself from bouncing up and down when I opened the package.  I have heard some great things about the Wink to Learn sets and really wanted to formally introduce Spanish to Xander (my mom is from Peru so I grew up in a bilingual household).  When I saw they had released Speak and Read Spanish, I ordered it right away.  Unfortunately, now I am on the fence.

When I first put it in I was happy to see that I had the option to choose between continental and Mexican Spanish.  I ended up watching the same lesson in both version for comparison.  I LOVE the format.  It is similar to Glenn Doman flashcards.  However, my problem is with the grammatical accuracy.  For example, they said "la mano" (the hand) but then showed a picture of two hands.  I think they should have either made it plural or shown only one hand.  Other words also contained singular vs plural discrepancies.  My biggest problem, however, was with "la pierna" (the leg).  They showed a picture of two feet.  Granted there were shins attached to those feet but still.  I am glad I know Spanish so could catch it.  I am going to watch some more lessons and see if they are all as flawed.

I don't know what to do.  Some of the information is great, and I love the presentation.  I would love to have it for Xander, not to mention being out the money if I don't use it.  On the other hand, I don't want to teach him wrong information.  Maybe I will just stick to making him flash cards and videos in Spanish, however time consuming it may be.  I am so disappointed because I have read such great reviews of their Chinese, English, and Encyclopedic Animal sets.  Maybe the only problem is with Spanish?  Sigh."
38  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: feeling down about EE this week and wondering if I have done the right thing? on: August 03, 2011, 05:17:25 PM
I have to agree with Kizudo.  Even if your daughter cannot remember all the facts you want her to, she still benefited from being taught!  You got all that wonderful bonding time and at the very least she will grow up knowing she has a mother who cares and was involved in her childhood.  What could be more important than sending your child into the world knowing that she has a stable, loving, foundation where she will always be accepted?  Also, you never know what connections you helped her make.  She may not remember the facts from EK, but she may have learned other important skills such as categorizing and labeling.  You may have made learning other in the future more fun and easier.

I know is not learning everything I am teaching him.  I have no idea what he is absorbing for sure and what is barely being registered.  Even if he learns to read early and becomes very "smart" I will have no idea what methods were effective and what weren't.  As long as he grows up happy, secure, and confident in his abilities, I will feel like it was worth it.  I don't want him to be afraid of learning something new.

40  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Tweddlewink or Shichida Schools in the US? on: July 30, 2011, 03:06:06 AM
Anyone know of any Shichida or Tweedlewink style schools in the US?  I am absolutely fascinated and would love to visit/work at one.  Even open one in my hometown if possible.  Seems like the only ones I can find are overseas.

42  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: How do you use your educational DVDs? on: July 25, 2011, 10:15:56 PM
My son has had a fascination for the television and computer since he was old enough to turn his head and I use it to my advantage!  I let him watch one reading DVD a day (We went through all of YBCR and are currently on Meet the Sight Words) and one other DVD (rotating between Your Child Can Discover, Baby Signing Time, and Trebellina).  We tend to retire a disc after about 3-4 weeks, but since he still enjoys them I let him watch "retired" ones on the weekends instead of the current ones.  I really want to try Wink to Learn with him to get more right brain time.
43  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Encyclopedic Knowledge / Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? on: July 22, 2011, 07:27:38 PM
Thank you!

Skylark - That would be perfect!
44  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Encyclopedic Knowledge / Re: Poor Man's TW! Anyone interested? on: July 22, 2011, 02:46:34 PM
I finally made a super short video!  Gathering the images for the slides was a lot harder than I would have anticipated.  I was worried about violating copyright laws.  I would love to know what others have done to get around it.

Here is a link to it: http://memorizingthemoments.blogspot.com/2011/07/my-first-movie.html
45  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Music / Re: Suzuki Music Alternatives? on: July 20, 2011, 12:46:33 PM
Thank you MummyRoo.  I have heard of Piano Wizard and was thinking of getting it in a couple of years.  I will add Kinderbach to my list of things to look into.   smile  A kids xylophone is on my wish list (partially because it is one of the few words that starts with X).  However, I am not in a huge hurry because I have a nice electric piano so can teach the notes in various sounds there.
