46  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: picture books on: July 28, 2013, 05:16:04 PM
You can also try "slide and seek" books which usually have the word under a picture that slides.  These are fun for babies and they highlight the written word.

Here is one my son likes:

47  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Is teaching LR to a 2 years and 5 months old too late? on: June 23, 2013, 12:10:36 AM
I really have no idea.  If I hadn't experienced it with him I would think that he was learning but wasn't showing it.  But I don't think that was the case.  He was willing to show me all kinds of other things he was learning.  Maybe he wasn't ready or maybe he just didn't care to learn.  Maybe it would have been better to start with videos and then switch to LR.  LR is a fantastic program for many reasons and I think it will be great to use again now that we are where we are.  It is also much more engaging than Doman's flash cards with no pictures which is how we started out.  But the videos are more fun IMO.  Now that I am pregnant I think it will be fascinating to see how our second one learns!

And yes, it is very exciting to see them learn! He is so far ahead of what I imagined he would a few months ago.   yes  smile
48  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Is teaching LR to a 2 years and 5 months old too late? on: June 20, 2013, 06:05:04 AM
I tried to teach my son how to read when he was a baby and seemed to have no results.  Now that he is 2 and a half though he absolutely amazes me how fast he is learning to read.  So I have been thinking the opposite - that maybe Glenn Doman was wrong about kids learning faster as babies - because at 2 kids go through an incredible language spurt.  Probably it is just that each kid is different though.

We took a break from LR a while ago.  My son also really likes monkisee.  I think it helped a lot in getting him started.  And, I thought Your Child Can Read was great once he could read so many words.  We had to take a break on that one too though, because he got afraid of it when it said in the second volume "Caves are dark and scary."  Ugh!!!  It is not at all scary, but I don't know why they have to say that when kids can be so suggestible.  I am hoping he forgets and I can reintroduce him to it in a little while.

Anyway, I plan to do LR again with him too.  We have just been so busy with other things that I just haven't gotten back to it yet.

Mjv8099, Ian is 2 and a half.

Krista, thanks so much.  I know the video will be wonderful. I am sending you a pm.   smile
50  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Reading new words - intuiting phonics?! on: June 08, 2013, 01:10:28 AM
thanks everyone, your posts are very encouraging. smile krista, monkisee has been huge for us.  i love that it has characters in it rather than just words with video.  ian loves Howie, Skip, Olivia and the rest of the kids .  I think that made a real difference for him.  Thank you for such a great product.
51  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Reading new words - intuiting phonics?! on: June 07, 2013, 01:05:59 AM
Hi everyone, I just wanted to share our success with you all.  Something clicked for Ian a few months ago.  we were doing readingbear and daddudes flash cards and he was learning just fine when I decided to try monkisee.  Suddenly he was learning new words really fast.  I had always thought he wasn't a whole words learner.  But, He's learned hundreds of words in just a few months now.

A few weeks ago I realized he could choose the correct word from a group of choices of entirely unfamiliar words.  He was playing stack the countries on the iPad and I would tell him which country to choose and he would look at all the country names and find the right one.   big grin

Then he read the word pull which he knows, but it was written vertically on a door so he read it "llup"  laugh He read the word brain from a video which I hadn't taught him and then he read "brow" as in eyebrow but read it like you would read the ow like snow instead of cow.  I think the mistakes are the most telling because
they show that they are not memorized words that he really is starting to process the rules.  We had only been through the short vowels on readingbear so it seems it is true that kids can pick up phonics from whole words.  I never really doubted it but I just didn't think it would happen that way for us.  It is very exciting. Cool

Anyway, just wanted to share!
52  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: My niece is reading with MonkiSee! on: June 03, 2013, 05:28:26 AM
How exciting!  We love monkisee!  Ian has really taken off since using the program.  I think he can now read as many words as he is supposed to be able to say at his age which is more than what is in the program. But ever since we started he has been picking up words so quickly.  Something just clicked for him.
53  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / Re: Crawling track length? on: June 03, 2013, 05:20:47 AM
Thanks! I have already ordered some materials and I am looking forward to using it.  Ian hated being on his tummy so I hope this one is okay with it.  Tamsyn, I saw your video on YouTube.  Very cool.  I wish I could do the brachiation ladder too, but makimg one would be way beyond my abilities.

55  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / Crawling track length? on: June 01, 2013, 03:17:23 PM
We never did a crawling track with Ian and I am really determined to have one for our new baby in August.  Do you all feel that it needs to be 8 feet long?   I was wondering if five feet would be enough.  Seems like it will take up so much space?  Has anyone made their track foldable?  If so how?

Also, from reading here Naugahyde seems like a good material as it is not toxic or the least toxic.  Any other ideas suggestions?  I am looking forward to doing this when our new little one joins us.  smile. Looking forward to doing all the things I didn't do with Ian and all the things I did do but have learned how to( hopefully) do better. smile
56  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / Re: Brain/Body Links - Chiropractic Neurology on: May 28, 2013, 04:59:17 AM
Fascinating.  The book The Brain That Changes Itself mentioned the trick with the mirror to make the brain think that the paralyzed limb is moving.  I would love to learn more about it.

58  Parents' Lounge / General Pregnancy / Re: if first one is c_section, can't i give birth? on: May 28, 2013, 01:35:38 AM
A friend of mine is having a vbac and she said a vbac is now considered safer in most circumstances and is standard procedure with her insurance company (kaiser).  We are in US.  If you are going to have a vbac it sounds like you need a new doctor.  Good luck!
59  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Other Topics / Re: Need Help: Teaching Social Skills on: May 19, 2013, 05:01:41 AM
http://www.stanford.edu/~sloeb/papers/How%20Much%20Too%20Much.pdf

I posted this elsewhere but I think it is relevant here.  This study of 1400 children says that kids who do not attend preschool are better socialized upon entering kindergarten.
60  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: Teaching. Baby10 languages ~possible? on: May 17, 2013, 05:06:12 PM
I think there are some things you need to be careful of if you try.  First, don't stress yourself out or your baby.  Mandabs advice of starting out with less and adding more as you go sounds like advice I would take if that were my goal.

Second, I would definitely give extra weight to some of the languages.  Maybe just two or even three.  Being able to communicate I think is an important part of a toddlers development.  Babies learn language by recognizing patterns of the language.  It's possible that his speech might be very delayed if you try to do too much and give to much weight to each language because he will have a difficult time catching the patterns.  I would think if you only spend an hour a week on each of last five languages that would be okay, although you might not see much progress in those.  I also thought that sign language to bridge understanding would be excellent.

I would take everyone's advice (definitely including mine!) with a grain of salt since none of us have tried to teach so many languages.  If you can find any case studies on kids exposed to so many languages I would seek those out.  I would just be concerned that I was not sacrificing his language development by being so ambitious.
