16  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Encyclopedic Knowledge / Re: Introduce history to young children on: August 08, 2013, 08:59:46 PM
You could try the Well Trained Mind approach of using Story of the World as your spine. We started SOTW around that age. We dip in and out of it, reading a page or two a day and listening to the audio book in the car. The WTM book recommends supplementing with the other books such as the Usborne History encyclopaedia. We also have the SOTW activity book but we have not started that yet.

I'd love to know what other people are doing!

19  Products Marketplace / Product Discussions and Reviews / Re: Baby's 1st birthday - any must-have toys? on: June 15, 2013, 04:34:10 PM
I got this one

Unfortunately, I gave it to him this morning, along with this pop-up toy (I couldn't wait - I'm worse than a child!). He loved them.
20  Products Marketplace / Product Discussions and Reviews / Baby's 1st birthday - any must-have toys? on: June 15, 2013, 03:48:21 PM
It's hard to believe that Reuben will be a year old in two weeks! I am looking for some inspiration for some EL toys. Ideally, they would be toys that he can use for a year or two. He is really active, loves books, music, climbing etc. So far, I am thinking of these:

1 - activity stacking blocks

2 - shape puzzle

3 - wooden blocks

Any other ideas? What were your favourite presents/buys or are there any you wish you had bought
21  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Stop Press - I started a blog! on: June 15, 2013, 03:10:21 PM
nee - so sorry for the late reply!

My goodness, 18 and a half read of Cat in the Hat a day?!? I am nowhere near that! wacko

You raised an interesting point about increasing the intensity, frequency and duration - so do more, more often and for longer...hmmm...some thoughts on this:

Intensity - reading a wide variety of books from easy to difficult, old favourites to unfamiliar, fiction to nonfiction etc. What type of books do you read? Do you reread some of them? Something that I am doing at the moment, at my daughter's request, is reading a book immediately after she reads it. I think she likes to listen to how I say the words, the expression, voices, etc., it allows her to focus on the pictures (on the page or in her head) and she will often ask questions about punctuation too. We generally only read 1 chapter a day, with lots of picture books thrown in to the mix - it sounds pretty pathetic compared to your goal of 15-20 chapters!  ohmy

Frequency - you could go for the HSIYB approach where you read aloud 10 times a day. I keep books everywhere for this - obviously in the children's rooms, by my bed, the kitchen table, the sofa, every room in the house, my handbag, the car, the buggy, and we have a book bag for when we go to cafe's. I usually read while nursing the baby too. (the downside is that the house is very messy with books thrown everywhere!)

Duration - longer reading sessions, never missing a day

What age is your little boy now? It's wonderful to hear that his enunciation has improved! Are there particular sounds he has difficulty with? Is it the start or the end of words? The start or end of a sentences? Or is it overall clarity in general? Does it warrant an assessment by a speech and language therapist?

Have you tried videoing your little boy or getting him to speak in front of the mirror? Sometimes children are unaware of the movement of their mouth and that they can improve their speech by becoming more aware of this.

Are you familiar with the Handwriting Without Tears approach? They advocate that children write one or two letters in their best handwriting, rather than writing the same letter many times of variable quality. Maybe you could try that approach, where at certain times of the day, you focus on one sound you would like to address and play games involving words that relate to that sound.

Sophie loves to read our baby's very simple board books, one or two words per page. Maybe you could ask your little boy to read these books to a younger child, asking him to read slowly and clearly to teach the baby.

Tongue twisters and games like Telephone are great for helping children to realise the need to clearly enunciate to aid understanding. Also, verbal memory games that involve repetition, e.g. I went to the shop and I bought... etc.

Learning poems and songs off by heart - again, repetition helps child improve pronunciation.

Have you read Fowler's book or watched the DVD? You may get some other ideas there.

Just a thought - are there any issues with his palate or tongue (tongue tie)?
22  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: John Taylor Gatto - review & discussion of his ideas on: June 05, 2013, 01:16:24 PM
I have been following this thread with interest and it has certainly given me food for thought. I am quite happy to say I am raising a baby and preschooler and, while developing independence is a key goal, I am in no hurry for them to enter the world of work, marriage and children. I hope they will study, travel, explore, and generally have a good time - is this so bad? I don't think so.

Sternberg published some excellent research a few years ago on risk taking in adolescence which highlights the differences in the brains of teenagers. This research has been very influential in sentencing of adolescents for crimes.

Also,  I think it is very important to remember that the life span has greatly increased in line with the apparent extension of childhood.
23  Parents' Lounge / General Pregnancy / Re: Essential Reading for EL parents- please help me out! on: June 04, 2013, 10:37:58 PM
Wow, Keri, that is such amazing news! I am so happy for all of you  big grin

I only read one EC book - The Diaper Free Baby. I enjoyed it and it opened my mind to the world of EC (I found this by accident when I was looking for a potty training book - I had not even heard of EC until I read the first page!)

I also enjoyed the Fowler book and DVD and the Dunstan DVD and book. I am looking through the Fundamentals accelerated learning curriculum by Colin Rose and I'm liking what I see so far - it's EL but focuses on the whole child with happiness as the end goal. One of these days, I'll do a review! I'll check through my bookshelves and report back if I can think of any other good ones.

25  EARLY LEARNING / Early Learning - General Discussions / Re: News Feature: Mom sends six kids to college by age 12 on: April 18, 2013, 09:53:44 PM
I saw this on my local homeschooling FB group, mostly comprising unschoolers and most of the comments were positive, - yay for EL!
26  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child Math / Re: The Future of Math?? on: April 14, 2013, 02:45:08 PM
I love thinking about math and what and how it should be taught.   I really loved this short video by an amazing mental math wizard, Arthur Benjamin.

He says out with high school Calculus and in with Statistics.  Its a very short 3 minute TED talk.

Great talk - thanks for the link. I wholeheartedly agree that stats is more important for the general population than calculus. BTW - Arthur Benjamin has a nice book "Think Like a Maths Genius". It has some nice techniques for playing with maths and doing almost-instant calculations.
27  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child - Signing, Speaking, Languages / Re: Sign language with hearing toddlers on: April 07, 2013, 12:52:39 PM
Gorgeous photos of a gorgeous girl. Well done on continuing with sign. I still use it with my 3 year old when we do French.
28  Parents' Lounge / Coffee Corner - General Chat / Re: The "Why Didn't I Think of That Sooner?" Thread... on: April 03, 2013, 11:16:07 PM
Toilet seat reducers here too, changed my world (only a mild exaggeration)
Masking tape to label the house
Using different coloured markers to label items on different languages
Great thread. I'll add more as I think of them. Looking forward to reading the responses.
29  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / Re: Teaching Word Famies - My first blog post on: April 02, 2013, 10:19:37 PM
I tried to comment on the blog but having difficulty - anyway, just wanted to say Wow, great first post - looking forward to reading more. I'll be running to the shop in the morning to buy some paper plates!
30  EARLY LEARNING / Teaching Your Child to Read / 8 month old early reading success (well, word identification) on: March 26, 2013, 10:11:04 PM
I just want to share my excitement with people who will 8, almost 9 month old, can identify many of the words from YBCR when given a choice of two. He LOVES climbing the stairs, so today I put two words on the next step and asked him to "show me CLAP" etc. He correctly pointed to or gave me 9 words. He got 3 wrong - not bad for a little baby. I have been showing him YBCR and LR 4-5 times a week since he was 3 months old. He adores all things EL.

Now that I've had a taste of him showing me what he knows I can't wait till he starts signing!  nowink
