Sammie, in case you would not find one close to you (and I think it may be quite bulky to ship), I wanted to say that it is not that difficult to make one -- we made both of ours, using some basic materials from Home Depot. We simplified ours, making it straight, as it worked better for us.

Thank you for your reply. I have been reading several posts for the same about making but was looking for the exact materials and method. By any chance would you have one?

We made one and we love it!  We purchased wood from Home depo for the base and sides.  We bought foam padding and leatherette at the craft store.  It cost us about $70 to make it- the foam and leatherette being the most expensive part.  We also used a spray adhesive, something like gorilla glue, to make it all stick.  Wow, that was nasty stuff.  I was pregnant and I made my husband do most of that part.  I helped as necessary and ran for cover, haha.  But it's not nasty after it cools and dries, and it has held up really well for three years, with very heavy use.  Right now it acts as a ramp on our monkey bars that leads to our bed in our bedroom, so you can imagine how often it gets used.  We also sometimes put it on our stairs and let the children slide down it.  Any neighbor kid who has done this always requests it when they visit, and I have to tell them no.   nowink

We pretty much followed Doman's instructions.  One thing we didn't want to do is put our mattress on the floor, but I could see the benefit of having the baby sleep on it, so we made one end solid, with the other one open.  The idea was that the solid end would prevent the baby from crawling off the edge and falling to the floor in the middle of the night.  Well, we never used it like that, I like to keep the baby close to me, and it was harder to make the track work like that, so I don't recommend that part.  We also put a basic strong fabric on the bottom to prevent splintering from the wood.  It's just rough ply-board underneath.

Here are a couple of pictures:  http://www.professional-mothering.com/2011/02/crawling-track.html

Good luck!  We have never regretted making it.

We used yoga mat for the foam part - I had two extra ones sitting around and we just cut it to the size  smile It worked really well - was easy to cut, glue ( we used regular wood glue, as it is non toxic, and my hubby was super concerned about using anything that might be slightly toxic, as I have severe allergies to common household things)

And we used linoleum from Home Depot, we chose the cute white and black pattern, that turned out as n exellent infant stimulation aid, my babies would lay there studying patterns  yes

And to save on time and money, my hubby got per-fab Shelf support frame from Home Depot, which turned to be a perfect size and covered it with very thin press board ( smooth on one side), it turned out lighter then solid wood piece, which is a huge plus form me and very cot efficient. He also put the sides on secured hinges, so we can fold our track for storing .

I am about to pull it out to start using it again, so I woul try to take pictures of it.

Tamsyn, thank you for sharing yours!

The black and white linoleum is genius!  We wanted black and white and couldn't figure out how to do it so we settled with dark green.  If we ever make another crawling track, we would definitely change a few things, but the one we have is so sturdy we probably never will.  It's like a clunky truck that will never die, except we love our clunky truck.   LOL

Thanks for the lovely ideas and pics. I am definitely gonna have to start working on this ASAP. Being in my second tri I figure its best to get things ready now. We however did not think the track would be helpful with my DS who is now 3 but this time around I feel the need and understand the importance.

Thanks again

Tamsyn and Skylark,

Please can you post the measurements you used to build the track. Some pictures would be appreciated as well. Also I read there are some activities which an infant should do on the track. Would anyone mind sharing what those are.

Thanks
Sam

So we got the wood and the carpet foam but we are unable to find vinyl. We tried Lowes and Home Depot but they got vinyl for flooring which is very thick. Any suggestions as to what can be used here.

Please help

Fabric stores such as Joann carry it.

Wow, it looks great!  I love the visual contrast- two birds with one stone!
(I'm sorry I didn't see your question about the dimensions.)

No worries I understand . Could figure out dimensions with the help of google Wink
Wondering what our lives were before search engines.

Now making the visual simulation foam chart will upload soon.
Anyone got details about how much crawling is needed by a new born? Do I need to wait till the cord dries/falls off etc.

Wow.  Where did you get the checkered vinyl?  Looks great.  I need to get ours made if I am going to do it.  Seems like I still have a lot of time, but I know it will go by fast.  What is a good lightweight wood to use?

I remember a story in Doman's book about a woman who brought her track to the hospital, so I guess you can put the baby on it right away.
